Branching off from @benstylus ’s thread, have you ever seen a YouTube gaming video that’s so factually wrong or pathetic that it sticks with you? Could be review, walkthrough, thinkpiece, top 10 list, retrospective, collector’s guide, or anything like that. Which videos have left a lastingly bad impression on you?

Don’t dox the video creator, of course. Don’t seek out these videos to leave nasty comments or harass anyone. This is just a thread to have a good laugh at some vids we disagree with, or explain why they were so disagreeable.

I’ll start with the first one that comes to mind. Years ago, I got into the Fire Emblem series. I found a video about the top ten worst Fire Emblem maps, hosted by someone very knowledgeable about the franchise. I went along with it, but I knew something was up when he started by insulting anyone who might disagree without watching the whole video—attacking the audience is always a solid move. He then unfurled various arbitrary rules that seemed to exist only as a way to exclude maps he didn’t want to count. Things like no optional maps and no maps from FE Awakening (I noticed his avatar was Robin from that game… curious). He seemed to think that those things automatically affected the quality of the level design, which simply isn’t true—optional and Awakening stages can be poorly designed just like any other.

Regardless, I watched. As the video went on, he started putting two or three different maps in each spot since they shared a common theme. You can maybe get away with that once, but he kept piling more and more into each entry, quickly killing the point of it being a top ten list. His #1 pick had my jaw in the floor: He put an entire game and a half, which is approximately 45 stages altogether. He just hated FE Fates: Revelation and Celica’s maps from FE Echoes so much that he declared them all equally terrible and ended the list with them. This conclusion makes less sense the more you analyze it (several of Celica’s maps are helpful tutorials or are unremarkable; six of Revelation’s maps are identical to ones from Fates: Birthright and Conquest, something he neglects to mention, and are likewise unremarkable; every stage in Revelation is vastly different and rarely comparable). The whole conclusion just turned the video into a farce, but he was dead serious.

Looking at his comment section, his audience was quite receptive to the list. I figured I’d get blasted if I aired my grievances, but that’s what I did. I wrote a respectful, well-reasoned critique, and suddenly people started rubbing their necks and agreeing with me! It was cathartic. I hope that YouTuber makes better videos nowadays.

There are a handful of YouTube folks that quite shamelessly shill whatever product a manufacturer sends them for free, especially with retro accessories.

Old Skool came out with a controller that mimicked the legendary Hori Digital Pad for GameCube. I watched the first video review of it, and while the dude said that it didn't feel exactly the same, it was close enough and still a great controller. Bought it with great speed and tried it myself, selling my original Hori controller at the same time.

The Old Skool controller is awful. Not just in terms of how it feels, but it fails with basic functionality. Missed button presses, long presses disengaging early, etc. I spent twenty minutes on the last pickup in Metroid Fusion using the controller before switching back to stock and succeeding on the third try. The Old Skool controller was flat out ignoring some of my jumps.

Sure enough, within a week, there were a number of competing reviews highlighting how the controller was a poor replacement for the original.

Does that include the Min Min Smash Bros. photo contest Nintendo held that Gamexplain were paid to commentate? It got so few entries that my photo was chosen as one of the best, lol. So I like that one video, personally.

This might not count, but there's one in particular that I can't remember the girl's name. To be honest, the channel itself wasn't bad, it was the girl it belongs to that is. She was talented at decorating towns in Animal Crossing New Leaf on 3DS, I'll admit that much, her towns were really nice and how she'd get them to look so nice is she'd use a modded system and save data editing tool to get around Nintendo's restrictions in the game and place objects where you normally wouldn't be able to. I have no problem with that because I did the same thing.

She started a YouTube Channel and for a fee she would sell her edited save data (you had to already have a modded 3DS to use it) with one of her pre-designed towns and put in any special villager that you normally would only get by buying those stupid amiibo cards. Whatever, she was charging like $35 which is lame, but not too bad I guess.

But with the Switch version, since it's not as easy to mod those as it is with 3DS, she'd charge you $300 for her to visit your island over Wi-Fi and give you ideas on how to decorate it (you can't do the landscaping stuff while another player is visiting, so you'd have to remember what she told you and do it yourself after she left), or pay her $200 fee and mail her your Switch and game so she can decorate your island herself for you. Those prices are ridiculous. But whatever, if there are suckers willing to pay it, good for her.

But she as a person is a piece of crap. Like, one of those religious freaks that give other religious folk a bad name. She's the type that shoves her beliefs down the throats of others. She banned a viewer from her Discord server for saying he was gay, and she is very much against abortions and you pretty much have to have the same beliefs as her if you want to have the privilege to interact with her. Like I said, her channel was decent, but she as a person is not.

edit: I found her. It looks like she hasn't been as active with her uploads these days as her last upload was 8 months ago and before that was a year and a half ago. When news first spread about her attitude in 2020, a lot of the Animal Crossing community was trying to "cancel" her. I don't know if that's why she has slowed down on uploads though, but I did notice some of her previous uploads have comments disabled. But again I want to stress that she is very talented at what she does, it's just a bummer that she happens to be a piece of crap person.
