PSA for fans of Ubisoft's racing game The Crew, they are pulling the plug on the servers in April.

https://www.pcgamer....

For those not aware, this game requires an internet connection to play, even in single player. So rather than releasing a patch to allow people to play offline, Ubi has chosen to render all copies of this game useless, and is encouraging you to play one of the still active sequels instead. (Though you can probably count on those games to suffer the same fate in another few years.)

Just a friendly reminder that any game that requires an online connection to play single player has a hidden expiration date built in.

Ubisoft has been the most visible company to release these kinds of games, with the entire The Crew series, Steep, and Rider's Republic requiring a continuous online connection, though a handful of games from other publishers have similar limitations.

This is so stupid. Imagine if Nintendo did this with Mario Kart though, people would riot.

I haven't played this game in several years, maybe I'll revisit it. I played the sequel and just wasn't liking it as much, deleted it after an hour or two.

I got The Crew when Ubisoft was giving it away as a freebie, so I'm not as disappointed about this news as I might be had I actually paid for it.

This kind of thing sucks but if all games started costing $75 next year because companies needed to pay to keep servers on for decade old games, I'd be pissed.

I understand being upset about having bought something you can hold in your hand and no longer play. But I find it real hard to believe people honestly give a crap about the Crew being turned off after 10 years. A 61 metacritic game. There have been 2 sequels with improvements and this last one is actually pretty good.

It may not have been a critical darling, but it's some people's favorite in the series. Others have a ton of nostalgia for it because it was one of their early gaming experiences. The comments on the Facebook announcement have a lot of upset fans (and a lot of "meh whatever" responses).

It isn't just about the Crew. It's about every game that relies on an online connection to even play in single player.

Have a random internet hiccup? Game stops working until it is fixed. Server problem? Game no worky.

Gran Turismo 7 is a much bigger release that requires an online connection to play anything but the Arcade mode. It's still going now obviously but Sony could turn it off at any time (though likely won't for several years), and then enjoy not collecting cars anymore.

Videogame preservationists hate this kind of thing because it essentially turns a game into lost media even when millions of discs are still out there.

It's one thing for online-only games to die like this (although providing consumers with tools to set up their own private servers would be a nice gesture in those cases), but games with a heavy single player portion to just be rendered completely unplayable is absurd.

As an advocate for video game preservation, it saddens me. Even if I have no interest in The Crew, it may have very well been someone's favorite game.

And even if it wasn't, the fact that it will be unplayable is a huge shame. Video Games are an art. The Crew is just another example of art soon being "destroyed" with time. no
