My birthday extravaganza has kicked off. I scratched my vehicular combat itch by starting on my Twisted Metal badge and finishing a forgotten entry in the franchise that I haven't played in ages.

Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2 were developed by a company called Singletrac, who ended up handing over development reins to 989 Studios when they were sold to GT Interactive. 989 produced two more numbered entries to the series to mixed reception (I'm firmly in the "WTF did you do to my baby?" camp) before handing the franchise back to its original team, which produced one last game - this one - based on its original engine. It is decidedly a return to form, abandoning the lame levels and boring physics of the 989 games, though the pivot to a more "family friendly" car combat game gets a shrug from me. The game has a ton of unlockables and some serious replay value, unlike its predecessors, and I did appreciate how many of the in-game tracks pay tribute to some earlier games in the series. I'll probably be picking this one up again to unlock some more secret characters and endings.

I didn't realize this was my first PS1 game for the year! Woo!

Next in the Birthday Extravaganza playlist is Mega Man, so I started Mega Man 8 for Saturn. The game is already living up to its reputation for having truly ridiculous voice acting, and I've barely made a dent in it.

For the record this is completely awesome, unfortunately it came in the same day as I got something else that ended up monopolizing my time so it’s just sitting around. Good shape, screen protector applied, black model 3GB RAM with 32GB internal storage and an SD slot that’ll take whatever you shove in it. What can it do? A lot! Here’s some footage of me playing PSO on it.

https://youtu.be/OEe...

Here's a little 3DS. With the Drastic EMU I'm able to turn on high resolution and get nice, sharp graphics with great performance; Mario Kart DS has never played and looked so nice. But that's not what I captured, you get DQ instead :p

https://cdn.discorda...6431aa83b4eb7&

I haven’t done much other than Dreamcast but it plays a lot of stuff, N64 performance is nice, Platstation great, Saturn okay. I’d set expectations to Dreamcast and scale back expectations for anything more complex (PS2 or GameCube for instance) where it may not be quite as performative without some tweaks. You’ll have to source your own games but I’ll keep the 16GB SD inside. Pics later. Speakers and the hall sensor analog sticks are particularly great on this. Awesome value emulation handheld, gets my highest recommendation in its price range. Doninates.

After the marathon last month, September has been pretty quiet, largely due to my free time getting eaten up by work and the handful of really long titles that I was playing concurrently. I finally finished one of them.

The PC version of Tomb Raider didn't do much for me originally, but I couldn't resist picking it up for $20 when Sony started pushing its Greatest Hits line. I appreciated the atmosphere, the music, and the cool environments, but ultimately, I never made it past the third level. Games where you get lost easily never sit well with me. For the Retro Talkshop Thread this month, I booted up the Retro PC and played through the original DOS version, armed with a walkthrough to keep me from scratching my head raw. It was a fun experience that was clearly ahead of its time, if you head in with the mindset that it's less an adventure game and more an extremely demanding platformer.

My birthday extravaganza starts in a few days, so I'm gearing up to revisit some of my favorite franchises. Poor Final Fantasy XVI... I'm starting to think I won't be able to finish it before Final Fantasy XVII comes out... or even Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Hello, all. It's been a while since I've done any trades in general, but my older brother wants a working cartridge copy of Mario Kart 64 (manual included would be ideal, but not box needed). I'm wanting to get him this for Christmas ahead of time.

Generally only wanting to trade, so I will definitely look at "Wanted" lists, as I do not have a regularly updated "Available" list.

Thanks for your time and for reading!

I also miss Super Mario Bros. 35, it was the only one of the battle royal type games that I enjoyed and had the most realistic chance of a 1st place finish in, though I admit it did get old after a while just like the rest of them. I played the Tetris, Pac-man and Bomberman ones each for a couple of days before deleting them, but SMB 35 I got a few months of fun out of it at least.

I haven't even started F-Zero 99 yet, once I saw it was using the graphics of the SNES version I was less excited, because I assume that's the version they're basing it off of and that's the one I enjoyed the least (I pretty much only liked the N64 and GameCube versions).

I watched a streamer play it and saw some people in chat hoping they'd make a Star Fox 99 and/or Excitebike 99. I think we shouldn't just suggest that they give the battle royal treatment to all of their neglected franchises. As cool as this F-Zero might be to some (or Excitebike 99/Star Fox 99 could be), it isn't quite the same as if we had gotten an original entry in the series. Hopefully there will be a new one on the next console and they were just using this one as a way to introduce the series to a whole new generation of players.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BEAT SUPER MARIO 64 WITHOUT COLLECTING A COIN? LET'S TAKE 40 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME TO FIND OUT!

Just start the video at "yes" or "no" and then show why. Your channel will get a "Don't recommend this channel" from me if you are all filler and no substance.

Or if your thumbnails are full of youtube-face. There are a couple of really great content creators I just refuse to watch anymore because they can't stop doing the youtube face nonsense.

Everyone talks about how mind-blowing Mario 64 was at launch. That's how I felt seeing Soulcalibur for the first time.

I have such a soft spot for that console. I bought it right before the final price drop and played the crap out of it my freshman year of college. Marvel vs. Capcom was definitely the standout.

To this day, Crazy Taxi is one of the few games to give me actual blisters.

Red Dead Redemption 2. I loved the first game and played the second game for like a week before getting rid of it. To me, it essentially it looked like a PS4 game, but played like a PS2 game.

I bought an Xbox (whatever) specifically for this game. I hated the main story line. It felt like a rail shooter, where you couldn't deviate from the intended path. I get why they did it, but your mates were complete asshats. Rob a bank? Streets lined with armed citizens? Bank has a back door? Naw, can't use that exit. Escape out the side? Naw, mission failed nearly immediately because your retard posse goes straight down main street while you escaped behind cover straight to your unprotected horse. Fudging garbage.

I also hated Mario 64. The game killed the Mario series for me until Galaxy. I specifically remember playing it thinking there was nothing to do, and it killed all of video games for me as an adolescent. Funny enough it was WCW vs NWO World Tour that got me back into video games.

I remember not liking Super Mario Galaxy at all.the first time I played it for like 30 minutes. I thought the controls were crap and so was the camera, and I was convinced that Nintendo would never learn how to get the camera right in a 3D platformer. I went back to it a couple of weeks later though and my whole opinion changed and now I would rank it in the Top 5 of 3D platformers on Wii.

The opposite was true for Super Mario Sunshine. I rented it in summer of 2002, this was when Blockbuster had this pass promotion thing going where for the whole month you could rent a game and return it for something else as many times as you want for the entire month instead of being stuck with a game for 5 days. I played Super Mario Sunshine for a few hours and kinda enjoyed it despite the camera sucking moose nuts, never finished it though, I returned it to Blockbuster 2 or 3 days later to get Madden 2003. I revisited Super Mario Sunshine almost 20 years later when Nintendo released it on Switch as part of Super Mario 3D All-stars and I played a couple hours and refused to play more, I don't know how I ever liked it. The camera is just bad and I feel the game in general, like Super Mario 64 which is also included on the Super Mario 3D All-stars collection, it simply didn't age well.
