I just recently subscribed to PS+ and was a little shocked to find out that I can't access/or have trouble accessing to cloud games(including PS1 and PS2 games) on my PS3. However I tested my old NFS Hot Pursuit game to see if the servers worked and they still do, thanks to me signing up for a 2 day trial(may purchase online pass this week). Imagine a 14 year old game which has active servers. Now I'm really hooked.

PS3 I don't think you need PS+ to play online. That was just with PS4 forward.

Yeah, PlayStation 3 didn't require PlayStation+ to play games online, it was needed for cloud saves though.
But I remember later in PS3's life (Xbox 360 was doing it too) certain games did include an "online pass" which was a one-time use code in the game's box that was required for you to play online so you couldn't just rent or buy a game used and play them online, you had to buy those games new or pay $10 for the online pass if you wanted to play online.
I am surprised Hot Pursuit's servers are still up though. I figured they would've been shut down a few years back when the HD Remaster released.

The online pass was the NFTs of its generation. Lasted about a year and died.
