Anyone here referee or umpire? I just started umpiring this year, and I absolutely love it. It's going to be my "summer job" (I'm a teacher), but I've been doing it all Spring in my free time (which is basically non existent at this point). It's good money, and you honestly can't beat being put in the sun for a few hours, watching a baseball game, and getting paid for it.

There is a shortage of youth officials all around the country. I coach my son's soccer team, and the local league has been telling us for the last 2-3 years that there is a ref shortage due to butt-hole parents and coaches yelling at refs and making them leave the profession (and scaring away new, young refs). They have to reschedule or cancel games due to ref shortages. They just told us they have to reschedule a game tomorrow to an earlier time due to a ref shortage. The biggest butt-hole parent that gets kicked out of every other game is the one doging the loudest about the change. People are so f-ing oblivious sometimes.

I used to umpire baseball with my dad while I was in college and I loved it. That being said parents and coaches can be real a holes if things don’t go your way or you make any mistake. I was damn good at it too but that didn’t matter lol

If you ever get to ref/umpire playoffs or a tournament, that is extremely fun.

I've actually been starting to think I may referee youth volleyball in the future. I've been coaching my daughter's team for 5 seasons now and really love it, but once she either makes her school team or ages out of it, I won't get to do that anymore. So I think I would enjoy becoming a referee at that point. The area I live in is pretty good when it comes to the parents and how they behave at the games, so I shouldn't have to worry about that aspect very much.
