Hey everyone!

My son and I would like to just shoot some YT videos and do some basic editing. I have no idea where to start. We just want to do cuts for right now and also find out how to film a video game being played with a small video of his face while he plays in the corner. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Shotcut is a free video editing software and a great place to start. You'll need a capture card to record video game footage. There's plenty of YouTube videos to show you how to get setup it's not too complicated

I don't know how to do it live but if this is all after-the-fact (you have the game recording file + the face video file) I've done something similar before. If you have a Mac, iMovie is very limited but super easy to use and free. It would take you like 5 mins to do a simple, quick test to try it out.

You just drag in the videogame file, then drag the face file on top of it. Set the face one to "picture-in-picture" instead of the default "overlay". You can resize the PIP and place it wherever you prefer, then preview it immediately. If the sync is off a bit then just drag the face video left or right on the timeline to get it right. Then File>Share>File to export it.

Windows Movie Maker is good for basic video editing, very user friendly.

@rayzor6 Actually, Movie Maker is their old solution and it's a bit outdated. Windows now comes with "Video Editor". My wife has been using that and likes it much more than Movie Maker.

Thank you all! This is a great first step. I'm trying to teach my son that information is SO available and that people are helpful to ask. However, he is very much plagued with 'wants to do the thing...doesn't want to do the little bit of work to do the thing unless he loves the process of it'. I'll see if I can plant some of these seeds to try to foster that desire to go get what you want! Thanks again everyone!
