How can I tell if a music CD is genuine?

I was going through some CDs that I have, trying to figure this out. Some of them say "Miya Records," which a brief online search indicated are knockoffs wry smile broken heart

Is there an obvious way to tell by looking at a CD, or something on a case insert?

Miya Records is a bootleg company.

My advice is to stay away from anime soundtracks (I am guessing that's what the CD is).

That's disappointing. Oh well. At least they're not all Miya Records. Thanks for confirming.

Best way truthfully is to know the big bootleg companies. For older disks, I know that Son May and Ever Anime were bootleggers. If trying to remember bootleg companies is overwhelming, remember legit companies like Lantis, Sony, or King Records. Or buy from stores known to not sell bootlegs. Just being a Japanese store is not enough; while rare, I have seen a few bootlegs in NYC Bookoff.

Sigh. What do I do with these soundtracks? I wanted to sell them, declutter a bit, but I'm not looking to sell knockoffs. Don't want to fool someone into thinking they're buying something genuine.

Some nice ones too. A brand new Chrono Trigger 3 CD set. Some Naruto ones. Some other type of Chrono Trigger one. Radiata Stories. Knockoffs, ugh.

At least the ones I opened served their purpose in terms of listening to the music.

If legit, you do have my interest based on what you listed already.

If they're not, and decluttering is of interest, maybe offer them in the freebie forum? I offered up a few there myself from before I knew what to look for, and prolly got rid of half of mine.

If you're completely unsure, snap some pics and post them. I can tell pretty quickly by looking at things nowadays…

Some I'd keep because I do listen to them periodically, but a couple I don't have much use for.

I don't think pictures would even be necessary, since a bunch say "Miya Record," which now I know are apparently knockoffs, but I'll take another look. Haven't gone through them thoroughly. Will let you know.

My first exposure to "import" CDs was in a local store that only carried boots. As they were priced similarly to US CDs, I didn't think twice about it at the time. I had all the OSTs for FF 1-8, Chrono, and several anime of the 90s, among others. I might have had 40-50 of them before I learned…

Sent you some pics of the CDs.

Not a perfect tell, but a lot of times ripping software that hits up a database to dump the music tracks on a playlist will glitch out and either give you the wrong CD or nothing when it goes to look it up.

For example, buying Chrono Trigger, and the CDs have FF music?

Since it is a bootleg and not in the program's database, when the program looks up the CD it will show up as unrecognized or some other error.

Well no, when you use ripping software it downloads track info from a database, it'll pull the wrong tracks/album for ID.

Oh, I see. A shame that knockoff CDs are so prevalent.

I bought a Disturbed album mid 2010s that, upon feeling it, was very clearly knockoff. Cheap emboss on the disc case. Told the seller it was a ripoff and I was going to return it and they told me to just keep it, was sold in bulk as new

In the 90's and early 2000's all the anime shops in my area (Boston) were selling bootleg soundtrack cds. One of them had hundreds and hundreds of different titles in stock and they were selling at legit import prices.

Companies like Son May, EverAnime, FloraChan, ... I can't even remember all of them.

I see them for sale all the time at flea markets and occasionally I'll see used cds in shops that I don't think they realize they are bootlegs. Or maybe they just don't care.
