Went with a full Sonic theme to match the motherboard for the person i was building it for. Took over 3 months to build as there were parts issues along the way. Thank you ASRock and Intel for helping making the RMA Process quick and painless.

Only thing I really need to do with it now is tuck away some of the slack on the cables in the case and it'll be good to go to its new home. One nice beastly Sonic PC.

Build looks great, and the specs are amazing. You did an excellent job.

I'm surprised they make a Sonic branded motherboard.

Did the person pick the motherboard because they love Sonic? Or did they pick the motherboard and then elect to go with the Sonic Variant?

They picked the motherboard and I suggested they may as well go full on sonic, haha

Awesome! I am still rocking your last build, the cooler did go out and I thought it was a wire so I plugged in a wire I shouldn't have and had to change the mobo, psu, and cooler...but now it is back on top! I also upgraded to 64gb of DDR5 5600mhz ram and I added a Gen 4.0 NVME SSD in a PCIE 4.0 slot. I also had upgraded the 3070 to a RTX 3090ti FE.

Was it easy to get the video card, or was there scalper issues going on? I'm just looking at that in awe.

The 4080's are still pretty high priced, but maybe not as bad as a year ago, i had no issues getting the card thankfully as I was able to get it from B&H Photo for a manageable price

This makes me want to build. Bought a gaming laptop last year, and I regret it. Would love to go back to a desktop. Maybe next year.

I miss the days of showing off my new builds at lan parties. Back in the day I used to catch flack for doing all kinds of UV lighting as it wasn't cool. Now everyone and their brother wants lighting.

Hell, do lan parties even exist anymore?

I've been building my own gaming rig's for over 20 years. This time around, I was feeling lazy, and I had the chance to jump on a crazy good deal to buy my cousin's Alienware.

I regret it more so that it's just underpowered and I can't easily upgrade it. It's got an i7, 32gb ram, and a 3070, which for the price I paid, well worth it.

My biggest gripe is the heat and the noise. There's only so much that a small form factor can do to manage heat, but I didn't really think about the noise as I've never had a gaming laptop before.

I've been fighting some heat issues on it, so I took it apart (which absolutely sucked), to re-apply thermal paste. While I was successful in lowering the temp by a tad, I broke the damn built-in WiFi/Bluetooth, which was unfortunate.

Taking advantage of being a laptop - yeah, that happened once. Took it with me on a camping trip to play some D4 when it first came out. Only real advantage it brings, is that it removes the need to buy a secondary monitor.

Overall, they are nice for sure, just limiting.

Which was a bigger downside for you, the heat/noise, or the underpoweredness?

Almost jumped on a great Alienware deal last year. HUGE upgrade from my current laptop, that's for sure.

Its not too bad, depending on your leveling of gaming you can get a 4060 for around $300 which is good for a lot of games, I'd only recommend something like a 4080 or 4090 if you want to max out everything with current gen games and have a little future proofing.

On the gaming laptops... I went all out on an Alienware last year and it was fudging awful. It had a spot on the LCD, the power adapter died, the battery died, the keyboard died. Eventually they decided all the issues were motherboard related. It ran slow, hot and the battery under just internet surfing lasted maybe 45 minutes. It had 64gb ram, an i9 processor and 3080ti.

So I ended up getting a Lenovo Legion 7 and it's the best laptop I've ever had. Even while gaming BG3 I get 3 hours on battery, so it will last a full day for me at work doing basic tasks on battery alone. It can run hot while gaming but it is a laptop (though never over 180ish degrees.) I have been using a cooler on it and it keeps it around 150 max. It's fast and just freaking works as expected. Currently has 32gb ram, 3080ti and i9. 10/10, even with my ram downgrade it's been a beast.

The latter. When you buy, they'll be great for the time being and hopefully for a couple years thereafter.

I mean reality is, throughout the last couple decades, I rarely upgraded my traditional builds vs. just building new. This was my logic on why laptop, as I was already buying/selling every few years, why not cut down on the real estate.

I'm still not personally sold one way or the other. The traditional rig will always give you much more options, no doubt. Yet there's definitely the convience of the laptop, if you're ok with the shortcomings.

kewl thing about this build is we had some hiccups with this build with having to test with another PSU, MB and Processor, so the test parts that were bought they let me keep, so I might try to do a build with them and sell it to try to make some money.

Same MB, an Intel i7-12700K and a Corsair Fully Modular 850 Watt Gold Rated PSU. Could get a good cheap case, ram, storage and graphics card
