What is your budget? I've owned about 20 in the past few years and I'm selling one tomorrow. I've paid everywhere from $200 to $6,500 for a machine, so having an idea where you'd like to be will help me to make some suggestions. Most games around the era of Theater of Magic will be $3000 and up. My best advise is to not chase any particular machine. Set a budget and make a list of all the machines you would be interested in purchasing around that price. Then when something comes up locally you really have to move quickly. Have cash on hand and be ready to go check it out in person.

Here is a link to the recent sale price of Theater of Magic. I'd plan on $6,500 to $7,500.

I'm currently working on a custom machine based on the board game Pandemic. The goal is to travel around the world collecting samples from various outbreaks. As you do that your increase the effectiveness of your cure. Getting the cure to 100% is your main objective.

@lpeters82 - wait, what? Are you saying this is your original concept/design? Dude that is one of the coolest things I've come across. I can't imagine the loe that would go into designing a pinball machine. Kudos to you sir.

It's a retheme, so it's me working with the existing rules of a game...for now.

Thanks for the advice. Budget is no problem I'd pay for the best option. I've been playing Theatre since about 1999 and it never gets old although it is "easy" and generally it seems the advice is to not own an easy game.

I definitely like the mid 90s Williams stuff best but have minimal experience with newer sterns etc. I'd like something that's lighter maintenance for sure. The band themed machines seems like fun. We have a pinball arcade near us now too so I can get over and check some stuff.

Nice on the custom stuff. I'd love to get into this at the same level.

The negative with Theatre of Magic is it's unbalanced scoring. If you are trying to set a high score you're basically going to ignore everything except for the left orbit or multiball with the center ramp and trunk. Repeat over and over. If you just want to hit the ball around for fun though it's a fantastic layout and looks great. If I were to suggest some newer Sterns my top three that you can still find new would be Jurassic Park, Iron Maiden, and Deadpool. Deadpool was a game I started out disliking. I still don't think the layout is my favorite, but it's just fun. Jurassic Park is almost the opposite. The layout is amazing, but rescuing park employees just isn't that exciting. There should be a few new games dropping soon if you want to check those out. I suspect Stern, Spooky, and Chicago Gaming will all make an announcement in the next few months. If those are some hot titles that might be a good time to pickup a used game.

I'm seeing a few TMNT, Iron Maiden and Houdini machines near me. I almost bought the medieval madness reboot not too long ago but I'm pretty sure I'd hate it quickly. I've played it hundreds of times its fun but the castle randomness / I need to tilt too much or it goes straight down the gutter -and dragon chute drive me nuts. I'm not sure why that one is so universally lauded.

I'll check out the newer sterns.

Feeb already said budget is no problem. The only way to lose with pinball is to buy a piece of garbage with a theme you like like Super Mario Bros. because it's a few hundred dollars cheaper than a game that's actually good.

I do dig the more generic themes though. I think that's why I like ToM etc from the time frame.

I'd recommend a game called Radical. Its challenging and fun at the same time. We used to own it but sold it before a move.

Focuses on the artwork more then anything else.

That's tempting. It stops at 1997 I guess? What are you looking to get for it?

Neither had we. We just wanted a pinball and it was available. It was in rough shape when we got it, some things didn't work at all. It looked like it sat outside part of its life. I went through and replaced all the important parts and then it worked great. Its such a fun and challenging game. If you get the chance, I'd highly recommend at least playing it.

I want to buy a pinball.
