Handheld for playing Steam games. They will be selling a dock (separately!) so you can play on TV as well.

As someone who mostly plays games handheld, I'm kinda interested in this. The placement of the dpad and face buttons seems weird, though.

This is kind of a peculiar product. I mean, most PC gamers want to play games on their powerful gaming PCs. Even if this thing is much more powerful than the Switch, which I'm sure it is, there's no way it won't be a huge step down from a decent gaming PC. I can see it being great for indie-type games, but is it worth $400+ to play just those types of games on the go? Time will tell I suppose, but I'm guessing no.

I'm kinda surprised it took this long for somebody to copy the Switch.

"As for battery life, "It's about 2-8 hours, depending on what you're doing," he said. "You can play Portal 2 for four hours on this thing. If you limit it to 30 FPS, you're going to be playing for 5-6 hours." "

That's a deal breaker, man. Can't be doing that to gamers who'd like to play for prolonged periods.

How long does the Switch battery last? It's about the same right? I don't play ours much but I know on a few occasions I pretty much drained the battery in maybe 3 hours.

I think this is a cool idea although I'm put off a little by the price since I'm not a big portable guy. But to have such a large potential library available handheld is pretty awesome.

I don't get anywhere near 8 hours in handheld mode on Switch. Maybe if I lowered the brightness a lot and kept it in airplane mode I'd get 4-5 hours tops, or perhaps a little more if I was playing a little indie game that doesn't use much of the console's power.

It's a portable pc...us PC gamers know what to expect from something like this and have been excited for something like this for a long time

I think it's reasonable to stop after 4+ hours to let your handheld charge...no?

It's a portable PC, there had to be some trade-offs. They couldn't make it any bigger and I think most PC gamers totally understand this and they have absolutely no problem with the battery life in this thing.

I want to get one at some point and I think I might just have to sell my Xbox series X because in my opinion this kind of makes it redundant. If I was still playing world of Warcraft this would have been like a definite pre-order for me is that the play world of Warcraft on the go would have been absolutely amazing. Like many I also have a pretty vast steam Library that I would like to play again and to be able to take advantage of steam sales this thing is absolutely amazing.

Agreed. The way Microsoft is doing their PC/Xbox games, is there any reason at all to own both a PC and an Xbox?

I'm kinda torn. On one hand I would love to play this at work. On the other hand, a lot of games these days require you to be online right when you start the game, and there is no wi-fi at my work. I might just end up getting a GPD Micro PC for all of my gog games. The steamdeck can play those too, but it is kind of big if I'm only going to play mouse heavy games and not controller style games.

This is something I've been perplexed by - nobody really talks about the size of this thing. I realize the screen on the Steam Deck and Switch OLED are about the same size, but man those controllers (?) on the Steak Deck seem reallllly long...

I'm not loving the analog stick placements...especially the left one.

I trust Valve, the Steam Controller looked wonky but once you use it, it's great.

This thing really is an Xbox killer. Xbox wanted to be pro consumer by putting all their exclusives on competing platforms and they done went and pro consumer'd themselves right out of the market because this makes Xbox irrelevant. It's a shame because I did like Xbox, but buying a Series X is straight up a waste of $500 now

MS should do what I have said they should have been doing for a few years now... exit the console business and make Gamepass available on everything. They would make MUCH MUCH more, get access to markets they never will otherwise. They are handcuffing themselves by sticking with hardware. They make good hardware, quality hardware but there approach is kind of antiquated. They try to push the most powerful hardware, yet time and time again Sony shows them that only plays a small part. Even Nintendo is proof that you don't need the to be the most powerful. Then you also have to question the splintered approach this gen with the Series S and X.

Microsoft may as well just be a publisher at this point. Phil Spencer turned Xbox around so far that it's running the opposite way of the other competitors. Hopefully when Xbox does inevitably exit the console market and just be a software developer/3rd party publisher, Valve can take their place and maybe actually develop games again

I don't think the size is an issue. People aren't actually putting their Switches in their pockets and walking around all day with it, are they? And if you're paying this much for one I'd expect at least a basic carrying case would be par for the course.
