I thought maybe we could get some invitation links going if anyone is interested in playing.

I'm just starting out and really suck, but it's fun.

Been playing chess since 2008. Was active in chess club and did tournament play for a couple years. Yeah I'm a nerd. So I'm decent. I haven't done either for a couple years but I still play online almost everyday. I'm rated around 1600-1800 depending on which variant we're playing. I mostly play on chessdotcom.

would be happy to play with ya!

I'm more of a mahjong person than a chess person. There's just so much memorization involved in chess if you want to get anywhere beyond beginner level. Memorization is definitely a valid gaming skill, just not one I wanted to focus on as much as other skills.

About a year ago I suddenly took up an interest in it. I found a YT channel of some grandmaster and he would break down different games and stuff. I found it fascinating, and started to wanted to play myself. I eventually signed up for a site where you could play against other people online, but after just a couple matches I quickly realized I don't enjoy playing it that much.

I used to play against my dad and cousin all the time growing up. Haven't played chess in ages now.

I've played chess off and on for nearly 30 years. Never really got so into it to try to memorize strategies. I've always enjoyed the end game. Consider myself a very casual player... sometimes years go by before I play a game. Really appreciate the game though.

I'm kind of surprised by the comments on memorization. I dont really play any particular strategies and just go with the flow of the game. Maybe it doesnt make me the best player but I don't you need to memorize every detail to play a good game. I'm hovering around 1400 on lichess.

Doesn't lichess start you at 1500? If you are at 1400 wouldn't that mean you are probably still considered beginner level?

Ok? So what?

Also, you may start at 1500 but as I recall the tolerances of rating drop can be more severe as you start off, compared to several months of play.

Sadly a sign of the times. Benstylus is a good dude. Being south of 1500 means you're winning more than you're losing (I assume), so better than average. I don't think anyone is claiming to be a grand champion. Let's be positive, and let's not assume negative.

I don't mean it as a negative when I say beginner, I just mean it as an objective measure of skill. A numerical rating without context of what it means isn't all that helpful.

Chess is a game with an extremely high skill ceiling, so unless you were on a chess team or have studied the game, chances are you would be crushed by someone who had put even a moderate amount of study into it.

I freely admit I'm in the beginner category - I know all the rules and how the pieces move, but I've only ever played casually. I couldn't tell you what the Indian defense is, or the Pirc defense, or any others (i literally googled "popular chess strategies" and those were the names of two of the results). My knowledge ends at pawns capturing en passant. And I know there's a cheesy way to get checkmate in like 4 moves if your opponent isn't paying attention.

I also don't really plan to put the work in to get significantly better, as I prefer Mahjong (specifically Riichi Mahjong), another game with an extremely high skill ceiling, but it happens to have some randomness as well so even a less skilled player still has a chance against a pro.

If you're playing chess against people of a similar skill level, you're likely to have good, close games (barring the occasional game where one person makes a colossal and obvious mistake).

I'm not a strong player, but I'd love to play some people here on Chess.com. I probably enjoy a 10 minute time control the most. Looks like my current rating has dropped below 1000.

Like, I said. I really suck, so please don't judge me, but this is the best game I've ever played.

@whitefire not a bad win. I will say your second move, Be3, is considered a bad opening move because your blocking your pawn on the e-file from advancing. Controlling the center is something you always hear in chess. Good job though on capitalizing on your opponents mistakes.

Thanks. I try to mix it up to see if I can win with different tries. I'm not good though. I heard like 1500 and up is good.

This was kind of a funny one. I'm black. I realized how much I sucked. My rating is really low on this account. I'm total garbage, but I thought this was funny.

Not super proud of this one, but I'll start posting games. I played one this morning.

I'm terrible at opening theory and as soon as the gambit was offered I was in trouble. I'm sure there is a better way to answer then bringing my queen out, but I did like pinning his knight. I was happy to see 12... Bxb4, with the pin on his pawn. It got super sloppy after that, when I realized I was down a minute on time. Despite the last move being a blunder it probably won me the game as it prevented a free move. We both were under a second.

I just played another game at the 10 minute time control. I'm over 1300 there, but assume that's because I'm on my way down. I hung my queen and almost resigned, but my opponent didn't see it and then I won his queen. It was a great terrible game.

I dabble in some Chess. I'd consider myself above average for people who don't know "real" strategies.

Is there a way for us to play each other, kind of like a "words with friends" where we take turns whenever we can, and it notifies us when it's our turn?

Does anyone play chess?
