I have two old Game Gears that need some repairs. One simply won't turn on, another turns on and there's video/audio but it looks like it could die any day. I've read that most of the Game Gear's issues can be corrected with cleaning/capacitator replacement and that you can have new screens installed.

I know this won't be cheap, but anyone know of a reputable site that provides these services?

Thanks for the shout out Gypsy. I primarily focus on the Saturn, Sega CD, Snes, and on occasion Dreamcast and N64. The Gamegear is not terrible, but I've never worked on one myself. It's got fewer caps than the aforementioned systems, but the space to work with is much smaller. The sound board is kinda cramped. Should be a breeze for any repair retailer.

Fyreboltx, if you don't need the screen replaced, even old stereo or tv repair shops can do the recap for you.

I managed to find exactly one still around here a few years back when I needed an amp recapped. Had to drive to KC but it was worth it.

Thanks for the input. I found a local shop that does them but they're surprisingly pricey and do not guarantee their work. Also checked the screen replacement upgrades too since system is gonna get repaired but that's pretty expensive. Looks really cool though with a new screen.

If you are on facebook you can try this guy. He's done a lot of work for me over the years and always reasonable prices.

Out of curiosity, what was the price quote and for what kind of work?

@tigg is planning to send me a GG to bring back to life. If you can wait a few weeks, I can let you know what kind of success I will have repairing it.

They told me they do a "standard cap replacement" service on Game Gears for $50 but that they can't say for sure it'll repair the system but I'll have to pay for the parts/labor regardless.

@fyreboltx Let me know what kind of repairs you want done on them and I'll see if I can give you bundle deal. I just finished bringing back to life one for @tigg. It took me 3 hours, as I didn't want to screw anything up, and I still feel like I did, lol. Sorry Tigg, I think I lost 2 tiny screws. Second time around should be closer to 2 hours, hopefully less. I'm still figuring out pricing, but if I can't fix it, I won't charge for anything other than shipping costs. Pictures in the link below.

Replacing the screen will cost quite a bit more than the recap service. I have a friend that I'm gonna try to learn from in the next few weeks. He does a rechargeable USB-C mod, with new screen, and new shell. He sells them for $350.

There are several kits that have been released, varying prices, varying availability, all probably better options than the original screen. If you have time, do some quick research and let me know if anything fits your fancy. BennVenn looks like a popular option. https://bennvenn.mys...

Wanted to give a shout out to @ChronoLe , my game gear would turn on with an ac adapter but couldn't use batteries, and the screen had vertical lines in it, so I figured a screen replacement was due. I knew I wanted it recapped and ask ChronoLe if he would since I knew he did Sega CD recap, though he stated he had never done a GG I still wanted him to give it a shot if he was willing. The recapped went well, and it even fixed my screen, but he took it a step farther and found out that the battery connections (the positive and negative plates touching the batteries) were bad and ordered some and replaced them.

GG plays like new now, and the price for the repairs couldn't be beat.

Thanks ChronoLe

Happy to help Tigg. If anyone else needs their Game Gear serviced and there isn't a local shop than can do it, let me know. Willing to do trades for repairs as well.
