What's wrong with my cat?

Maybe some of you remember, I recently got a cat and put up a topic on what to name her. I settled on Samus and end up calling her Sam for short. After a few week adjustment period, my cat acts strangely. It follows me around the house meowing at me (all food and litter and water bowls full). It used to let me hold her and pet her but now it's very hit and miss.
The only attention she does seem to really enjoy is walking back and forth and rubbing herself on my hand. Then she just falls over. If I try to pet her she gets up like she dosent enjoy that and if I pet her belly she bites me. Here's a video:

Should I just chalk it up to the personality of the cat? I think she's trying to tell me something but I don't speak cat.

Seems pretty normal to me. Some cats just don't like to be picked up no matter what, and a lot of them don't like their bellies being touched. The meowing, walking back and forth, rubbing her head against your hand, that's all perfectly normal. I have a black cat too and he acts very similar to what's shown in your video.

I don't know about the waking around talking to you but in that video Samus looks like a happy cat. Cute cat and awesome name!

Cat looks happy. Laying on their backs and exposing their belly is a sign of trust. But some cats are ok with petting the belly, others aren't.
We have 2 cats and can't pick one of them up at all...it freaks out and hates it. The other one is totally aloof and doesn't care in the least. So all cats like different things but yours looks like it likes you. So that's good.

Seems ok to me. You can hear her purring.
One of my cats likes to rub against my hand and after about the fifth rub like that will flump over on the floor. When she does it for me we've learned she's telling us she's feeling a little frisky and either wants me to rough up her tummy OR she wants me to pet her from her head down her side to her tail. Sometimes I'm not sure which one she wants.
Your can flops over and then looks at you, so she wants affection of some kind.
My same cat doesn't like to be held, but she's a shoulder cat. She loves getting up to my shoulder height and then just sits on my shoulder. I could carry her around all day like that and she'd be happy.
I think it's just a matter of learning what she wants and how to communicate with her.
I love the little white patch on the end of her tail!

Your cat looks like it likes you and seems pretty normal for a cat, but it may take more than a few weeks for you and your cat to totally bond. My late father-in-law wanted my wife and I to get his cat when he passed, but my sister-in-law (a dog lover
) snatched her instead. After a few years we did get her. It took about a year before the cat (Susie) was totally comfortable with us. We had her about 6 years before we lost her to lymphoma. She was a great cat and we still miss her.

I know many cats get funny when you touch the lower back/base of tail area. My cat would bat a paw and try to 'play' bite me. I had a friend who's, if you pat it in that area, would start to lick his right paw...every time.
And cats usually do NOT let you pet their stomach without some kind of reaction. That running back and forth and touching your hand seems like he is very loving.
I had to put my cat down a year last February...and when he was young...I could almost wrestle around with him. He'd bite, but NEVER hard enough to do anything but leave indentations in the skin. As he got older, he either didn't want to control it or couldn't because he would bite harder. But I could spin him on the floor and honk his head. He loved it.

We have a female cat that will still bite when I try to touch her belly. I'm not an expert, but I think that's pretty normal. My understanding is that is a defensive position, with all claws and teeth pointed at the "attacker". I think for some cats that instinct just takes over. It's for sure gotten better and sometimes she seems to really enjoy it...but then seemingly out of nowhere I'll get scratched up.

I will echo the sentiment that this all seems pretty normal. I've had and have plenty of cats over the years. Some bite as a reflex, some chew on things, some will jack with the back paws, some will let you carry them (others will spaz if you try), some will roll around on their back etc etc

This. Touching a cat's underside is a sign of weakness / vulnerability to some cats. Very normal. Don't get your ass ate up.

My own experience is that cats don't like being picked up often but do love belly rubs. Sometimes it just takes time to get your cat into a good place. My one cat hid a lot until my other cat sadly died and then she started coming around popping up and laying on my pillows. I believe my one deceased cat was a bully to her when it came to getting attention. Sadly it took the one dying for her to become really affectionate and open up to wanting to be around me all the time. I've always found that cats and dogs love their belly rubbed but some only want it on their terms. I've been around a lot of animals that love their belly rubbed but when they want it to stop they will hiss or growl. They still always came back but it was on their terms and when they wanted it to stop they would let you know.

Try side pats too. Your cat has a drum system built in, don't let it go into dis-use. Two-handed bongo cat.

The last cat we had that lived to almost 18, would follow us around and meow like this but not like to be petted. She did enjoy having the very top of her head rubbed/patted. No belly rubs. She loved to try and murder us by walking under our feet as we walked.

Ah yes, the classic technique. One of my previous cats was absolutely insane about it. I'm pretty good about dealing with it but she really enjoyed darting in very quickly lol.
