Number: 22
Full Title: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Platform Played: PlayStation 5
Collection: N/A
Native Platform: PlayStation 5
Original Platforms: PlayStation 5
Badge: Level Up! (1/2)

I spent nearly every free moment I had at home playing through Rebirth, prioritizing the story and the main quest and skipping most of the side content. This is completely different from how I usually approach a Final Fantasy game (though admittedly, my playthrough of FF16 was pretty similar) - especially one of such nostalgic significance - but I've spent the past two months chased by spoilers and didn't want to ruin the core of my experience because of some YouTube trolls. The end result? I finished the game in roughly 45 days with a playtime of 57:22, compared to Remake's 61 hours in as many days.

In the end, the game was at its best when the party was crawling a dungeon. The mini games and action sequences take a step back, the unhindered party is at your disposal, and you get a healthy mix of combat and exploration. The "open world" region segments are a lot like this as well, but the map is usually too sparse and too difficult to navigate (especially the late game zones) to be as enjoyable.

In a way, Square did fans a disservice by releasing Final Fantasy XVI first. FFXVI was polished, dark, and unique among modern Final Fantasy games. Rebirth feels rushed, recycled, and somewhat convoluted with its barrage of colorful, saccharine minigames and graphics that seem locked to "Texture Quality: Medium" for some unexplained reason.

During the first few hours, I was extremely excited about seeing a bigger chunk of FF7's story fleshed out with modern tech. The battle system, on the other hand, felt over-engineered with a whole bunch of new synergy concepts piled on top of Remake's battle system. As time went on, those opinions reversed. Embracing multi-character tactics is the secret to the game's biggest spectacles and most satisfying combat. Unsatisfying, however, was how Nomura treated some of my favorite moments from the original game. The somber revelation at the end of the Cave of the Gi was ruined by some ridiculous Michael Bay-style cinematography, and the infamous climax at the end of Forgotten Capital was too confusing and overloaded to elicit any substantial emotional impact.

With the main campaign in the rear view, I considered going back and finishing the side content that I skipped as I ran away from spoilers. Without the incentive of getting closer to the finale, however, the frustrating zone designs make it harder to play the game for more than just a few minutes without taking a break. And then, I find a big fiend, get into a great battle, and find the urge to stay in Gaia a little bit longer.

The game will inevitably get a PC and Steam Deck release, so I'm excited about potentially doing a more traditional playthrough where I complete side content as I progress instead of saving it all for the post game. Until then, I think I'll mostly set the game aside and figure out how to deal with the odd, sudden desire to play through Remake again.

As I did with Remake, I've picked back up the original Final Fantasy VII - this time, the original PlayStation version and not one of the more recent ports - with the goal of retracing Rebirth's footsteps, all the way to the end of Disc 1. It's my first time in decades seeing the game on a real CRT with a real PlayStation controller, and my nostalgia engine are firing on all cylinders. On the portable front, I've been exploring the PlayStation release of Pac-Man World on my Vita. It's a charming game, but the early 3D platforming gotchas - coupled with some serious early gut check levels - have made progress slow. Maybe next month's game(s) will be a smoother experience.

Spring cleaning. There probably won't be much more added to this sale beyond this, maybe a handful more games. This is it, everything I'm willing to part with.

- PRICES: do not include shipping. Offers will be entertained. Some form of discount will be realized if buying many items, mostly in the form of reduced or free shipping. Priority will be given to higher dollar sales to save on time/shipping.
- LOCAL PICKUP: I'm posting everything, even some things I might prefer not to ship. So, if you're near to NW Ohio or don't mind a road trip, I'd be willing to meet an established trader to make a deal in person. I'd be willing to travel a bit, but how far will depend on the value of the deal. Expect a nicer discount if willing to meet up.
- TRADES: I will trade for Might & Magic items I don't have (you'll have to send me a list). Strategy guides for Xenosaga III and Suikoden II, and Burger Time Party for the Switch.
- CONDITION: Everything is in good/very good condition, some a little less than, some a little more than. If condition is important, please ask. I will of course double check before sending anything to you. Assume everything is CIB unless noted.

Retail Display Material
( https://imgur.com/a/... , long shot on this stuff due to local pick up likely being necessary; shipping these items one or two at a time is just about out of the question. Items located in NW Ohio)
*To be candid, your typical Wal-Mart poster runs $7.99-12.99. I’d like to think most of these actual store display posters are worth more than that.
*Not pictured: Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon and Kirby Epic Yarn counter displays
PS2 sign - $400-500
x9 standees - $50-$200+ a piece
x27 display boxes - $10-50 a piece
x8 plastic posters - $20-30 a piece
x26 assorted cardboard posters - $10-20 a piece

---My low estimate is $1500+, high is $4000+. Very difficult to price/value these items.

I suffered through two more mediocre at best Game Boy Advance games, all in the name of the Retro Talkshop Thread.

Number: 20
Full Title: DK: King of Swing
Platform Played: Game Boy Advance
Collection: N/A
Native Platform: Game Boy Advance
Original Platforms: Game Boy Advance

This game's shoulder button-driven swinging gameplay had me wanting to throw my Pocket across the room almost as quickly as it charmed me in the first place. Clearly just intended as a dusty revival of Clu Clu Land with the Donkey Kong franchise slapped all over it (with crisp, cheerful sprites, admittedly), there are too many hazards, gut checks, and frustrating mechanics to turn the relaxing puzzle adventure I expected into an exercise in frustration. The boss fights weren't exactly a picnic either. At least the game was short.

Number: 21
Full Title: Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness
Platform Played: Game Boy Advance
Collection: N/A
Native Platform: Game Boy Advance
Original Platforms: PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Boy Advance
Badge: Girl Power (1/2)

Calling this a "true sequel" to the original Ms. Pac-Man is a bit of a stretch. Sure, it stars Ms. Pac-Man, and sure, you run around collecting dots - 'scuse me, Pac-Dots - while dodging immortal ghosts. The levels are less about survival and more about just making it to the end, making the game feel more like Chip's Challenge than Pac-Man. It gets off to a great start with simple controls (there are no action buttons) and decent design, but the moment levels start getting complicated, the GBA's platform limitations start to get in the way. The 90-degree isometric perspective and lack of shading make it nearly impossible to differentiate between floors of different heights, turning the game into a mind-munching game of trial and error.

I did really like the music, though. The tunes for most of the levels are extremely catchy without falling head first into the tropes that such themed tracks - Egypt, Chinatown, etc. - tend to exploit.

I'm going to continue with Pac-Man month by starting Pac-Man World on the GBA next. With less than three chapters to go in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, I'm getting ready to "switch discs" to something else, though I haven't decided what yet. A big part of me wants to load up the original Final Fantasy VII and play through the first disc, imitating what I did when I finished Remake and played through the original game's Midgar sequence. The rest of me is shuffling between finally starting Diablo IV or picking up a Psygnosis game for the Retro Talkshop Thread's annual challenge.

I've played four levels so far, which have been okay, but overly simple. The only real challenge comes in the form of, well, challenges that the game let's you partake in if you so choose in order to obtain dragonfies. Which reminds me, each level contains 10 dragonflys. It's kinda like the stars in Mario 64. You need to obtain enough dragonflies go get access to different areas. Also, there are a butt-load of gems just scattered around every level. It's a huge collectathon with those, but I've only spent some of that sweet mula like one time. I've got over a 1,000 of whatever this currency is and no where to spend it as of yet. The camera in this game messes with me a bit, especially if I'm rotating it. I don't know how to explain it, but it's as if the world is slightly warped sometimes as I rotate the camera. Not a problem, but just something that I've noticed. The framerate can really suck at times, which is one of my biggest gripes. The sound is stupid and unforgettable. I was playing a flying challenge, when all of a sudden, I noticed that the music had stopped. A few seconds later, it restarted again. Another sound issue I noticed is that when you break vases, sometimes they simply don't make a sound. It actually happens quite often. Overall, this game seems rather rushed. A few other things: Never having played a Spyro game, I don't know if this particular mechanic was present in the previous games, but there's one that bothers me. When you jump in the air, you can then press and hold the jump button in order to glide, which comes in handing with trying to jump from one platform to another. This would be fine, except for the fact that there are some edges you won't be able to make it to unless you tap the Y button at the very end of your jump, which gives you a little upward movement necessary to complete to jump. It's kinda stupid and unecessary. Another thing that I've noticed is the voice acting. I swear, every set of NPCs that you interact with have distinct accents. The first world had an oriental theme and all the masters that I rescued had stereotypical Asian accents. Plus, they were all named after movie martial artists! (Jacki, Jet, Bruce, etc...). There's one level that is a farm setting with super-hick farmers who's cows were being abducted by aliens (actually a pretty fun level). I've also come across tourist pigs who sound like they may be from New Jersey. I wonder what other accents I will come across next. As annoying as the voice accents can be, the dialog made me laugh a couple times, which is much more than I could say about Charlie's Angels! So, @Frank , How far have you gotten so far? Have you at least completed the first level? I'm curious as the how your experience has been so far.
I haven't been feeling well and haven't really had the opportunity to hook up the GameCube or Wii. I will soon.

I'm both glad and also disappointed you aren't having a miserable time. laughing out loud

As annoying as the voice accents can be, the dialog made me laugh a couple times, which is much more than I could say about Charlie's Angels! So, @Frank , How far have you gotten so far? Have you at least completed the first level? I'm curious as the how your experience has been so far.

You folks have been busy!

Thanks to everyone who peeled back the banana on the Kong dynasty this month. Should you pay another visit to Donkey Kong Country, Land, Commonwealth, DMZ, or any other internationally recognized gorilla-ruled sovereign body, feel free to share here to add another barrel to your cache.

Here is the final tally for April's Game of the Month:

1. Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness - 22 points
2. Pac-Man World - 21 points
3. Painkiller - 17 points
4. Kirby's Epic Yard - 13 points
5. Super Mario Land - 7 points

Gender dynamics being what they are, while Pac-Man built an empire of arcade games, follow-ups, and power-ups, it took his poor wife 18 years to get the pseudo-sequel that her grown-breaking eponymous title deserved. Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness - a reimagining of the blockbuster classic arcade game - dropped for the PlayStation PlayStation in 2000 and infused the Pac Maze formula with 3D graphics, level progression, and a big bad that's after the world's treasures. The initial PlayStation release was followed up with spruced up ports for the *n64* Nintendo 64 and Sega Dreamcast Dreamcast, a 2D portable release for the Game Boy Advance Game Boy Advance, and a PC sequel that nobody cares about.

This is another game that I got a lot of screentime with courtesy of my five-year-old son, who loves to sit in my lap at Dave & Buster's and play co-pilot in various driving games. Unlike Mario Kart GP, Cruis'n Blast lets you register a profile and saves your vehicle upgrades and beaten tracks between races. In true arcade fashion, your first few races place you near the front of the pack but rarely squeaking out a win, but after a few upgrades and after learning how you can shave fragments off of your time by doing tricks, you start putting some notches on your steering wheel.

Despite only having five tracks, it took me a while to get wins in all of them. Other than drifting, I didn't bother to research how to do barrel rolls, backflips, and other mid-air spins, which are essential to getting a time bonus at the end of the race. That, and my son is obsessed with the rain-covered Shanghai level with its underwater tube, lightning effects, and rainbow bridge at the end of the race. He finally allowed for a compromise and let me finish London - the last track I'd yet to finish - as long as we followed it up with a run on Shanghai. Twice.

Resident Jane Goodall wannabe SupremeSarna suggested I give the Game Boy Color port of Donkey Kong Country a try, and as a fan of both the Super Nintendo original and the Donkey Kong Land series, who am I to refuse? The game's not going to win any awards for graphics or controls, but the added color makes it much easier to parse than the pea soup bog of the Land games, and both the soundtrack and level layouts translate well for a super fan. I just wish the trick jumps, barrels, and other acrobatics were as intuitive to pull off as on the home console release.

Having played through the original Donkey Kong Land fairly recently (back in 2020 as part of my Year of Replays), I opted for its sequel next. I owned all three Donkey Kong Land games when I was much younger, but I remember this one the least, which was probably for the best. The lack of a bruiser gorilla on your team makes big enemies annoying to deal with, the levels feel distinctly more annoying for no specific reason, and the game introduces a bunch of unnecessary collect-a-thon mechanics, the worst of which is the need to purchase additional saves. As with Donkey Kong '94, I bypassed the Super Game Boy game enhancements in favor of the Analogue Pocket's full screen Game Boy mode, which felt like it helped more than the increased sprite definition.

Full Title: Donkey Kong GB: Dinky Kong & Dixie Kong
Platform Played: Game Boy

Native Platform: Game Boy
Original Platforms: Game Boy
Badge: Hop 'n' Bop (already earned)

Donkey Kong Land 3 was the next logical choice in my backlog, but after discovering that the game received an official Game Boy Color port in Japan, I had to download a translation patch and explore that version instead. Both the color palette and the more forgiving level design made this a much more enjoyable playthrough than its predecessor, even if Dinky Kong is a bit of a doof and the game's bosses are more annoying than co-habitating in-laws.

I doubt Donkey Kong month is going to finish with another completion, but I've decided to wind things down with DK: King of Swing and see if there's anything there to write home about. I don't think I'm done with Donkey Kong games for the year, but even as the new Games of the Month rotate in, I don't see myself shifting to anything new on the homefront until Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is completed.
