On the primary system for the profile that downloaded the game, you can play under any profile.

On any other system (non-primary), you can only play under the specific profile that owns the content, AND it will check the internet to verify.

Damnit, that's what I thought. So the kid has to use my profile for everything ... aka, he's gonna jack up my saves, haha.

Ugh, thanks for confirming.

For as much as I love Nintendo, they really do have some pretty antiquated ways of doing things.

I mean, I get it ... it helps to prevent account sharing in a way, but like ... for real use cases like this, super annoying. My kid should be able to access my library, especially when he has his own Nintendo Online account, that's part of my family plan. If a secondary account is in your family plan, they should have access to your library under their own account.

It's an improvement over how they handled digital 3ds and wii u games at least

Just make his system the primary system. Then, he can play under his profile and you can play under yours. The only annoying this is that you'll need to connect to the internet every time you try to play an eShop game.

How do Sony/MS handle this sort of thing?

Sony has a similar "primary system" requirement in place although you can designated both a PS4 and a PS5 as primary systems and play ps4 games unrestricted on both.

I think it's probably not as big a deal because there aren't any portable PS4/5 systems so people are probably not buying extra systems for each kid

That's kind of what I thought. So it's odd that Nintendo is always getting called out for this.

Nintendo games are seen as being more family friendly. So they get called out when the family has to buy more copies

I normally agree, and primarily do buy physical. Yet, when it comes to kids and jumping between games ... digital really is amazing. Clearly, comes with its own issues though frown

Sony does this WAY better. My brother (ps4) and sister (ps5) both can access my library without any of these damn hurdles.

So your brother can access your full PS4 library, and your sister can access your full PS5 library? How many people can you set up this way? What paid service (if any) does this fall under?

Also; I would’ve had to buy two copies of Splatoon 3 for my gf and I to play. Instead, and I think this is actually the benefit to all of this, I buy one digital copy, download it to both consoles, have my lady play on the primary on her profile, I play on the other under mine(since I own it) and BAM! Two players on one purchase of Splatoon. There are some ways that digital is definitely better than physical.

I don't really know how it works ... I gave them my login smile

I do know with a PSN account, you can have a Primary/Secondary console, and I think it applies to BOTH PS4/PS5.

I wish I had realized sooner that you could do this even with the big Nintendo games. Could have saved a lot of money over the last few years.

Let me see if I'm following correctly. The check on the secondary system only checks that the profile isn't playing the game?

In other words, you're able to play on your profile on a secondary switch, this is allowed because your profile on your primary isn't playing it, and your gf is able to play on her profile on your primary Switch because there is no check to see if the game is being played elsewhere due to it being the primary switch?

I think any “checks” that it does is to see if you own the game. Your assessment is still correct but I think it’s because on my primary switch that SHE is playing on, it doesn’t check because the primary one lets others play anything I own. Then on the secondary one that I’m playing on with My profile, it only checks to see if I own it, and since I do, I’m on my way.

Would that work with Animal Crossing New Horizons? That's the only game I've double dipped on.
