Currently has a May 12 2023 release date. That's just over 4 months away. That's not so far, but there isn't that much known about it.

Here's a video that has the reveal trailer and other info that has so far been released.

https://youtu.be/30D...

Is it unusual for such an anticipated title that's only several months away to not have much known about it?

I don't usually follow games along their pre-release stages, so perhaps a lack of info is standard.

Personally, I'd rather a lack of info when it comes to games that I plan on playing. I don't care for spoilers, or to watch every trailer that comes out.

I'd have thought there'd be more out about it though. But again, I don't usually follow along with the progress of game development.

Definitely a game I'm looking forward to though.

It’s just kinda how Nintendo operates. Fire Emblem Engage was announced in September and releases in January. I don’t remember seeing much of BotW besides the Great Plateau before that game released either.

Nintendo has done this plenty of times. There was so little info known about Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Mario Maker 2 after their announcements until they finally hit us with a Nintendo Direct in the weeks leading up to their releases that gave us more info about them. I would expect the same for this game.

I'm nervous the collector editions are gonna sell out instantly like BotW. Just hope we get insight to when they'll drop.

And if there's a nice Zelda OLED, if I can get one, that'll be when I make the Nintendo Switch upgrade.

Interesting. The lack of info seemed unusual to me, especially with such a highly anticipated game. But it sounds like this isn't unusual.

Aw crap, forgot about that... They for sure will. I have a masters and collector's unopened for BotW. I will pay scalper prices if I have to but damnit I hope I don't have to!

When I bought the game, I got all the DLC. So, I never played without it. But, I suspect I would have been fine without it too.

I never completed Trial of the Sword (it was hard and takes a while with tons of combat), nor did I play the game in Master Mode. Generally, I'm not looking for combat challenges. The combat is OK but it wasn't what I'm into (weapons always breaking is an annoying feature imho).

I was more into exploring and doing the shrines and getting all the upgrades and such. I think one of the DLCs did add some shrines. So, that was OK. I also liked the Travel Medallion. I think I got the motorcycle thing but wasn't that into it. There's a lot of junk EX quests in the DLC too for frivolous stuff I didn't care about or promotions for other games like Xenogears (that bugged me because it felt "immersion-breaking"), that I mostly skipped.

If I remember correctly, it was the same with BotW. For the longest time, all we had was that cinematic trailer of Link running from a Guardian. Then, just a few months before it released, Nintendo released an amazing trailer for it during a Direct, easily one of my favorite video game trailers ever.

As excited as I am for the game, I wish I had a bit more time before it's release. I really want to finish Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword before it comes out. I'd even like to re-play BotW on Master mode, but I definitely don't have time for that.

I loved the DLC. Trial of the Sword was a really fun challenge with a great reward, and the Chamption's Ballad added some really cool shrines, plus some challenging boss re-matches. The Travel Medallion was pretty helpful, as was the Hero's Path.

I'm sad that I never did the dlc. BotW has a weird place in my mind and heart. Beat it within two weeks of release, doing everything sans the seeds. I regret rushing it because the memories are pretty sparse.

Then my sister discovered it and became legit addicted. It was her favorite game of all time. She grew up watching me game and getting all my pass me downs. I did good as an older brother, raising two younger gamer sisters. She, more so than my other sister, got really good. Took her to some SSBM contests back in the day and she'd win every time. She was good... No big brother, but damn good!

She'd camp out at my house for a weekend, play all day, take insane hand written notes. She had hundreds of hours logged, but was maybe half way through the actual story. She loved just wondering... Exploring, crafting. She was insane and I'd make fun of her all the time. She always told me she didn't want it to end. She loved figuring everything out on her own with no help. I still have her notebook. She has pages and pages of notes, recipes, things to do. I got her a Switch for one of her bdays and BotW. She resumed her play and still never finished! Just continued to explore and love her time with the game.

After she died, I've wanted to play again as a means of connecting, but it just makes me fudging depressed anytime I think about it ... Kept wanting to get to the DLCs, but I just can't =(

Hoping I'll be able to enjoy TotK without losing my crap as a way to remember and honor her.

Fudge I hate that I just relived this memory... Time to turn it off and drink more wine!

Botw is great for just wandering and exploring. There's so much to find wherever you go. I should try to do that more. I tend to get focused on something I want, then I go to a wiki/map to make it happen faster.

One of my best gaming experiences was replaying Fallout 3 but avoiding quests and just wandering around the wasteland.

re:grief - I think it helps to talk about it, remember, relive, etc. Try not to push it away, turn toward how you feel and the memories you have, lose your crap, let her spirit burn through you, purifying you. Be grateful you have such intense feelings, it's the best part of life even though it can hurt.

Even if it's real, and really slick, I can't get myself to buy another Switch until it's a Pro or successor.

Since launch, I've been rocking my regular Switch and dabbled a little bit with a Switch Lite. I ended up getting rid of the Lite and using my V1 Switch primarily docked.

I love Nintendo, and always want to get the special edition consoles, but have yet to actually get one. I'm usually an early adopter, especially when it comes to legitimately new Nintendo consoles. By the time special editions release, I already own a stock console. And since I spend my time looking at the TV, and not the unit hooked up, I can't justify double dipping.

Honestly having come from a discussion (elsewhere) on the Switch hardware, I really hope Tears of The Kingdom doesn't have performance issues. Nintendo really needs to up its hardware, even if they remain at 1080p resolutions.

No way! It's just a minor upgrade. Like the DS to the DS Lite, or the 3DS to the 3DSXL. Switch OLED isn't even on the same level as DSi and New 3DS.

Another week down. That much closer.

I wonder if the game will keep the breakable weapons mechanic. I didn't mind it that much, but I know that others really didn't care for it.

One thing though, the breakable weapons made me hesitant about using the legendary weapons. I hung them up in Link's house, rather than risk breaking them. They're unique weapons, so I used them as decorations. Would have liked to use them, but it wasn't a big deal.

You can rebuild the Champion weapons.

I feel like getting rid of breakable weapons would require them changing up quite a bit from how BotW worked, which I really don't think they're going to do. I'd rather not have breakable weapons, but I got pretty used to them in BotW and didn't mind them too much, so I don't really care if they're in TotK.

from what i remember, i liked it. the alternative would've been to have a LOT less variety in weaponry, leading to less variety in chests and whatever all over the map...and then the whole aspect of taking weapons from enemies wouldn't happen...just because there would be no point.

i didn't really find it frustrating #most# of the time, just had to have some basic resource management in the back of your mind before going into a big fight. something that happens in a lot of games, just not in a zelda game until then.

i feel like they might tweak the system a bit, but overall, i'd be shocked if it was gone.

Yeah, there's a blacksmith that can do it in each of the 4 villages of the Champions. You just need the similar looking weapon that you find a lot of in that area (e.g. Boulder Breaker), plus some various materials (different for each weapon).

I'm not a fan of breakable weapons. I'd say there's too much weapon variety in botw, with most weapons being fairly pointless and thus clutter in the game. I agree, it's unlikely they would change this, though.

I think they could do a few things to make it less annoying. For example, when you open a chest and it has a weapon in it. Instead of saying "inventory full" then closing the chest; give us a way to drop/replace something we are carrying so we can easily take the usually-better weapon in the chest.

I love botw, but I think it's fair to say it has a number of user-interface annoyances like this in it. Another thing that always bugs me is the way they only partly let you skip cutscene-like moments. For example, every time I find a shrine, there's a short movie for activating it, then another as you step on the elevator, then another as you enter the shrine (still on the elevator). So, I end up hitting 'x' to skip those, 3 times and it's only partial because it always starts the movie before I can skip. Finishing the shrine is similar with 2 skip points and also some unskippable parts mixed in it. These are things that are always the same, or maybe you get some semi-pointless little message in the middle. It's like the developers are in love with their little videos and expect you to want to watch them 100s of times.

100% agree with the inventory full/chest situation. that was a huge pain.

and there's always going to be quality of life issues...i do hope they fix what they can and don't ignore the complaints out there. the skipping of the cutscenes are complicated though, as i'm sure some are hiding loading screens. if that's the case, adding variety would be a good start

@bill @bogo

Regarding the inventory full/opening a chest situation, you can then drop an item from your inventory and then go back to the chest. Are you saying that it would be a good addition to allow a swap during the chest opening sequence, as opposed to the chest closing, going into your inventory, dropping an item, and then reopening the chest?

Those scenes were on the screen for a very long time, but that's probably because it's rendering the map/content in the background.

I agree that some variety would be nice. Maybe some combat scenes or something. Not just the same screen.

The weapons are the biggest point of contention in BOTW. Just increase durability a lot and that probably eliminates it. Like 400%. Let the Master Sword last a lot longer too, or have enemies that can nullify its damage or something.

Weapon durability is nothing once you get the master sword. You chuck weapons left and right. Leave them in the shrines. I don't know a better solution... Fallout 3 where it slows you down to a crawl? Witcher 3 where you sell 100's of things for peanuts in a town? Not a fan of infinite storage as it creates huge imbalences. Wind Waker where the weapons disappear as soon as you leave an area. Old school Zelda where you only get a dozen weapons or tools? I see Fallout 3 and BotW equivalent. I'd rather not spend hours in shops selling crap. Either one of the former, doesn't bother me.

Also could go RE4 style where you get so many "blocks" of storage, and items take up different amounts of space. This would be terrible.

Therein lies the problem. Open world doesn't really mesh with the Zelda formula. I'd much rather have a traditional Zelda game that takes place in a huge world with tons of room for exploration, but you slowly gain access to all of it as you acquire new items and abilities. I don't need to be able to go literally everywhere right from the very start. People's obsession with that is what forced this to be a "bad Zelda game". It's still a great game though.

It's been awhile, and I binged/rushed through BotW; however ... at first I hated the durability, but because of it, it created more diversity in being forced to have to change weapons. Again at first, hated it, but later ... I kinda grew fond of it. How many games out there do they give you tons of options, but ultimately you use 10% of them? While annoying, it does create/force you to check out more options and adds some diversity into the gameplay.

With Nintendo constantly relying on their old IP, and re-releasing stuff, I'm still amazed we haven't seen re-releases of the handhelds. Oracle games, Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, etc. EASY cash cow that they're not milking nearly enough.

@bill I played through PH and ST not long ago. IMO, ST is better than PH in MOST ways, but the main way that's it's worse is a big one. The travel system in ST is just awful. I'm not even a big fan of the water travel in PH/WW, but the train in ST sucks big time. It's actually kind of fun when you first start, but it very quickly becomes a huge chore to travel anywhere as your map gets bigger and bigger. They tried to help with this by adding a fast travel system, but it's kind of cumbersome to use and really doesn't help that much. If you can get past the train though, it's a very fun Zelda game. It's still touch-controls though, so if that's what you hated about PH, forget about it.

I think I still have the cart of PH. Maybe I should try it again. I can't remember specifically what I disliked about it. I think it was something about returning to a central dungeon that had timed elements (the hourglass?). I didn't enjoy that play and/or struggled with it. In most games, I disliked timed stuff.

Honestly, Spirit Tracks doesn't look great to me and it seems like it's not especially easy/cheap to acquire, so we'll see.

I actually picked up Skyward Sword for Switch recently (never played it), so I should do that next regardless. But, I'm still replaying BotW some right now. Not sure I'll do the endgame, but I did the divine beasts and have plenty of shrines still to do.

I've been dreaming about an 'all stars' type release of the GBC/GBA games, but the PH/ST would likely be too difficult to port to anything because of the touch controls. they would have to completely redo the major function of the games. It's not impossible, but not as easy of a cash grab

That said, from what i remember, i actually enjoyed both PH and ST. they were different and the touch controls were a bit cumbersome at times, but the games were short enough, where i was still able to finish them

I agree that BotW wasn't a great Zelda game, though it was a good game overall if you're into open world. For me, when I have the ability to randomly wander I tend to get disconnected from / not give a crap about the main story / quest line. Also, the temples where you just fought the machines over and over again got old really fast... though I did enjoy the ones with the puzzles.

I also wish there were more challenging aspects to the game.. the only thing truly challenging was the black minotaur/tiger thingey.

I agree with whoever said the cooking mechanic needed to be streamlined.. it wasn't really fun after the novelty wore off and just became a chore where you needed a guide to know how to cook good dishes.

Lastly, I wanted more quest lines like the one where you helped build that new village on the lake island... or more things to do to upgrade your house, more challenges/meaningful reasons to use shield surfing which was fun as well. I thought it could have gone alot deeper on the quest line side of things I guess. Quantity =/= quality.

I doubt they'll ever re-vamp these two games to use traditional controls. Changing the movement to a control stick or dpad and swinging your sword to a button would be easy enough, but there were a lot of other things that required touch controls, like mapping out the path of your boomerang and stuff like that. They would have to change a lot. The games were completely designed around using touch controls for everything.

That said, from what i remember, i actually enjoyed both PH and ST. they were different and the touch controls were a bit cumbersome at times, but the games were short enough, where i was still able to finish them
I really enjoyed both of them as well. I first played PH shortly after it came out. I was enjoying it, but for some reason only made it about 1/3 of the way through the game before getting sidetracked. I finally returned to it a couple years ago and beat it, then went on to beat ST as well. They're very solid Zelda games if you can get past the touch controls, and that stupid train!

Yeah, a lot of people don't like that dungeon that you return to multiple times. I actually liked it quite a bit. That bad news is, there's something similar in ST, and it's even harder IMO.

Yeah, I'm definitely hoping TotK has more challenging combat. We need more variety in how you can attack enemies, and how they attack you. Once you mastered the flurry rush in BotW, the game became way too easy. I eventually got to where even the Lynels were easy to beat. I used to go around after every red moon and re-fight all of the Silver Lynels to stock up on good supplies. I got to where I could defeat all of them in about 20-30 minutes, and that was including travel time.

I agree with whoever said the cooking mechanic needed to be streamlined.. it wasn't really fun after the novelty wore off and just became a chore where you needed a guide to know how to cook good dishes.
I actually really enjoyed cooking. I spent a lot of time researching all of the best dishes, and used them heavily. I just wish there had been a section that saved any dish you had cooked in the past so that you could quickly cook it again without going through and selecting all of the ingredients every single time.

It's interesting you put it this way. I tend to really like open world games and also have mixed feelings about main story quests. I often wonder if they could just make an open world game without quests at all. I think I'd like that the most. Though, it is good to have some narrative reason for motivation. All the cutscenes, characters arcs, and boss battles associated with quests and such have less appeal for me these days. They feel mostly tedious (a bit silly, overwrought, similar to other stuff, etc.).

either way, based on the trailers, it looks like TotK will likely have 7 main dungeons (based on the number of 'tears'), so they will likely be traditional dungeons. just not 100% sure what the outcome of those may be. could be an item, could be vial of whatever the blue stuff is Link has in the trailers...or something completely different

I don't get this complaint coming from someone asking for a more traditional Zelda. BotW has a wide variety of ways to attack most enemies, including the environment. Traditional Zelda's typically have 1 way to attack, and it's usually spoonfed to the player.

What traditional Zelda had more challenging combat? I guarantee I died more in my first playthrough in BotW than my 1st playthrough of OoT, WW, TP and SS combined.

Do you want Zelda Dread? Remove exploration and turn it into a boss rush game?

Fair question! There's not much they can do with combat in the 2D games so I accept it there, but one of my main complaints about the 3D Zelda games has always been that the combat is far too basic and simple (lock on, swing or jab, backflip to dodge, repeat). So traditional Zelda or not, I've always wanted more challenging, intricate combat. I do appreciate the ways Breath of the Wild "opened up the world" so to speak. There were tons of things you could do in BotW that had never been possible before, and I loved it. It's really just the sword combat that I want to see improved. I wasn't one to stay back and kill enemies by chucking a hundred bombs at them. I would do that sometimes when necessary (mostly in the early game), but the vast majority of my damage was done with the weapons. Improving enemy types and attack patterns would help tremendously. BotW was severely lacking in enemy variety, so you got very used to how to defeat the 3-4 main enemy types very early on, and then it became super repetitive. I'm hoping TotK brings in many more of the enemies that have been in the Zelda games throughout the years.

I wasn't asserting that traditional Zelda had more challenging combat. I would like it if traditional Zelda and BotW both had more challenging combat in general, or at least more opportunities for challenging combat, even if they are optional.

I thought BotW had a good amount of challenging combat, and like most games once you figure out some tips and tricks they become easier. I still haven't beaten the boss in the DLC.

It's not really a tip or trick, it's one of the main combat moves that the game really pushes. As soon as you get good at it, it completely breaks combat. It makes a much bigger difference than just combat becoming easier as you get good at it, like in most games. Besides, in most games, enemies become harder as you progress, but in BotW, they don't really become harder, they just give them more hit points and weapons with higher attack. They just take longer to defeat, but they're not harder. The exception is Lynels, the higher classes actually have more challenging moves and patterns.

You make a good point. Since I like to read a lot of novels I often find the actual plot lines in video games to be super shallow and boring, with some exceptions like some of the point and click adventures and a game like Heavy Rain.

So yeah.. maybe my problem isn't the open world as much as it is the storylines are super boring and uninteresting to me. LOL

It's unfortunate that Nintendo looked to the West on this game. It's just open world trash, honestly. I was running across the map while simultaneously looking at my phone while playing it and was like... Yeah this is boring. And the tiny dungeons for hearts or whatever, not fun at all.

I actually enjoyed Divine Beasts more in this recent replay. They are a little bit like a dungeon. The controls that shift the beast to allow you to solve them was an enjoyable mechanic too. The boss battles seemed very easy this time around, though I'm OK with that.

The boss battles was probably my biggest complaint. I didn't care for fighting black gas 5 times as the main bosses, but the divine beasts were interesting as they each had similar stages throughout. They seemed like a good entry for something that could be better.

Yeah, I'm really hoping I can get that collector's edition that they're most probably going to announce.

Remember the days when we could simply go to a local store and buy the new stuff that came out, instead of having to hope that someone doesn't grab it online .28 of a second quicker than you? You could even pre-order at a store. Now sometimes the stores can't even take your in-person pre-order because their inventory was sold out online.

Some things were much simpler back then. And back then doesn't even have to be way back. Even 10-12 years ago was a lot different than now in certain ways.

In general I don't get games on release day anyway, with my gaming backlog being pretty full, so I don't mind waiting for a gradual price drop or good deal. But there are certain games, such as Tears of the Kingdom, that I've been looking forward to and would like to play sooner rather than later. We'll see what happens.

Nintendo does not drop the price on their in-house games much. So, waiting for a cheap price isn't a great strategy and buying day 1 isn't much worse than you'd pay later anyway.

I tried playing a little Skyward Sword... ugh, the controls (particularly the camera control) are so awkward. It made me appreciate botw even more. It feels like they worked out the controls for botw better than other 3D zelda games. Tears should be good too.

That being said, the $70 price tag hurts a little more. $70 isn't the end of the world, but to me $60 was accepted as the current standard and it seemed to "fit" somehow for a AAA game. $70 though? The number just sounds like a bit too much for a game.

Will I still buy the game? Probably. But I'll be just a bit less excited than I would have been. It's a damper on the perceived experience.

I blame Game Freak and poor code optimization for that, not the Switch hardware. There are games that look much better that also run much more smoothly.

Considering they only develop for one system it's pretty pathetic they can't make it play at a stable framerate.

I imagine Nintendo views Zelda as more of a tentpole franchise for them and knows the fanbase will drop the extra money on that as opposed to a new Pikmin, so they’re using it as the first step in the $70 transition. It seems the entire industry is heading that direction but, like this example, seem to be easing the gaming community in slowly so that it doesn’t seem like it was a huge overnight shock.

Yeah, but that’s my problem. I just can’t justify (or afford) that price on a regular basis and really, really don’t want to encourage it. I know it is what it is, but, like I mentioned in another thread, it just means that gaming will be an even smaller priority for me in the coming years unfortunately.

Also, @theJaw - see the other thread in Hot Deals. You can spend $100 on the two vouchers and save money.

You can buy $100 in credit from pathlesscookies (or Costco) for $90, and redeem for Zelda @ $70 + another $60 game (like Pikmin 4) = saves money -- if of course you're good with digital.

I'll pick up TotK on digital to play and collect a physical.

Yah I mean, there are only a couple BIG games I get each year anyhow... so if most games stayed at $60 or less, I could put up with it and just wait for cheaper deals on the big ones. That's why I'm happy Pikmin 4 is still gonna be $60 when it drops, but the coming years look bleak as far as pricing goes haha

$130 for what you get with the CE seems awfully steep. Gsme plus a steelbook case, a few pins, a poster, and a small art book... that's it?

I just kinda expect more out of what is probably Nintendo's most beloved franchise.

After the TotK trailer, he said "a collectors edition will be available on launch day" ... but it was while they were showing the current edition. I dunno, probably looking too deep into it, but it's odd that this would be the only CE/LE given the last one had two, and this one is pretty lackluster.

Personally, if they took out the metal poster from Tears of the Kingdom and put in a soundtrack CD or something else that's usable, I think that would have been a great upgrade. I doubt I'd use the poster. But I do like the steel book.

To me, that photo of Zelda just hints at the idea that Zelda will have playable sections in Tears of the Kingdom. At the end of the trailer, she tells Link to "lend me your power" or something along those lines. I think that's why Link's arm is all effed up... because he's somehow transferring his life force (or something) to Zelda so she can go on some sort of journey elsewhere in the world/timeline/whatever.

I mean, it could also be an OLED tease but I think it's also more of a story-driven tease.

Yeah, Zelda definitely playable in at least a limited fashion. I'd lean more towards she's playable throughout otherwise it wouldn't be worth hinting at.

I tried playing some other games on my Switch, but I've come back to botw.

I'm pushing myself to do Trial of the Sword. I dislike stuff where you have to redo stuff from the start if you fail. But, I just made it to the end of the first part. I read some guides too. So, maybe I can go further.

I think I'd enjoy it if Nintendo incorporated some rogue-like elements into TotK. *ducks flying tomatoes* No, seriously. If they want to add something challenging like Trial of the Sword, give me some way to upgrade my setup a little each time I try again. I find it helps motivate me.

The whole save & load aspect of botw feels old school to me. I prefer games that allow me not to think about that kind of thing. Just do something reasonable when I "die".

I had the most trouble with the first trial. I don't know if it was actually the hardest, or if just trying it several times and getting good enough to actually beat it made me better at the style of TotS, which helped me beat the 2nd and 3rd trials more easily. Probably the latter, because on paper, the 3rd trial definitely seems the hardest. It's much longer, and the last room in particular is insane. I think I got pretty lucky beating that last room the first time I reached it. One thing that helped me was playing slower. In the regular game, I always ran into battles guns-a-blazing, but in TotS, I slowed down and took my time. Any chance I could, I would take out enemies with bombs instead of wasting my resources, something I never did in the regular game because it's painfully slow.

Yeah, in the main game, I play very aggressively, hitting them fast and hard. Also, upgrading my armor so taking a few hits doesn't matter. This does not work well at all in the TotS, though.

I am decent with bombing skills, but they can backfire (blew myself up a few times). TotS is very generous with arrows too, but I have a lot of trouble hitting stuff that's moving. Even the Hinox, I mostly using running away, throwing bombs because I have trouble hitting its eye.

Though, I did just read a tip where you can use stasis on it first. That's a good idea! I hear in general that using stasis helps a lot in TotS. I just need to get in the habit of using it.

I also hear that doing the perfect guard shield trick with guardians is key in TotS. I've had some success with it, but I'm worried that one failure means game over. ...I do have a fairy, though.

Do you have the gyro controls turned on? Those helped me a lot with aiming.

Yeah, Stasis is great! Since Hinox is a mini-boss, he doesn't stay frozen as long as smaller enemies.

Definitely. When you're not in the middle of a run, just go practice it somewhere. Once you get the timing down, you'll barely ever miss it.

I can confirm this. On the Wii U the gyro shrine puzzles behaved MUCH better with the gamepad. They were pretty atrocious on Switch, which is further proof BotW was a Wii U game from the get go. Makes me wonder if all of the inventory control was originally done on the gamepad screen when not playing handheld and they yanked it so the Switch version wouldn't be inferior.

Slight adjustments to shooting arrows was great on both though.

That is cool, but I think I'd rather save $10 on my copy (ordered on Amazon before the price increase) than have it. It looks to be approximately the size of two Switch cases, which makes it a bit too small to properly display.

I cannot wait for this game. I’ve been needing a new giant open world game to distract me from the day-to-day.

Rumors swirling that the Minish show up again in the game. If there’s a sky world, a normal over world, AND a Minish world (or at least segments of a Minish world), I will crap my britches. Would also likely explain the fairly long development time.

The timing sucks with D4! A month feels like pressure to binge it before D4 takes over all gaming. Sadly I binged BotW as my first kid was on the way. Really don't want to repeat that mistake (ha, binging a great game that is).

I just hope to be done with RE4 and possibly Hogwarts before TotK comes out.

$20 for that spoon though! Likely full of heavy metals.

If this is legit from Amazon JP via Nintendo JP, makes me wonder if cooking/eating is more featured. I hope not.

Truly is a gem. I finally beat it for the first time after starting it a bunch of times since it dropped on NSO. Easily top 5, maybe top 3 Zelda games for me. On a good day, it could even be my #1, I love it that much.

Even though I hadn't beat it until recently, I've always dug the shrinking mechanic dating back to when I first started playing it years ago. I'd love to see that brought to a BOTW style Zelda, even if for just a few sections.

Imagine running around the giant open world before suddenly spotting patches of flowers in parallel lines, and then having to bomb a nearby boulder or something to uncover a shrinking portal. That'd be so neat, but I'm probably getting ahead of myself here. I won't be let down if there's nothing Minish-related, but I'd be over the moon if there was.

I'd really like to see some old school 2D dungeons, or even a nod to that, in Tears of the Kingdom. Won't be a deal breaker if not, because I don't think we can expect it, but if it does turn out to have that, that would be really great.

Well, apparently Minish-style shrinking and at least one Minish village was originally included in early concepts of BOTW. There’s official art of it and all:

https://www.reddit.c...

If they returned to this concept for TotK, it could potentially explain the extended development cycle the game has seen.

Also, and this is neither here nor there, but there’s something about the title “TEARS of the Kingdom” that invokes the idea that the Minish are the tiny tears of Hyrule to me… small, hidden and forgotten. Brushed aside, etc etc. I remember Nintendo didn’t want to reveal the title of the game too early for fear it’d give away too much of the plot, but upon hearing the title I wondered what they meant because it didn’t seem to give anything away. But maybe with that theory in mind, it sorta does?

I dunno. Again, that’s just me letting my mind wander, and it is a bit of a stretch, but it’d be neat.

However, I hope there's a lot they're still not showing us. Otherwise, what I've been predicting (or what I've been afraid of) for a while now is true. It's basically BotW 2.0 with some new areas in the sky, slightly altered world map, and a couple new abilities.

I'd rather weapons not break, but it's not a huge deal to me. I got used to it in BotW. I thought in that video yesterday he was going to use the rewind ability to un-do a weapon breaking, that would have been funny. It would make the whole weapon durability thing pointless though, so I doubt that's a thing.

The gameplay video was done well enough to give us a sense of some of the mechanical changes to the game. I'm curious how long it will take to obtain all the abilities before you're off having fun. I'm looking forward to some of the crazy and entertaining ways people come up with for accomplishing things in the game. I'm really hoping the game doesn't have any terrible performance issues like we've seen in other games of late.

The Rewind ability seemed good.

Fuse... definitely interesting and potentially fun, but at the same time it feels like the sort of thing I don't love about botw-style Zelda. It's hard to put into words exactly, but it seems like it will have me fussing over tons of pieces/parts from inventory and using the game menus to select things and whatnot. All that is not really playing the game in a way I look for in a zelda game. It feels a bit like them doubling-down on breakable weapons (which are too many and a bit fussy imho) I want to be moving, flowing, upgrading, and progressing without fussing over my inventory.

Put another way, Fuse seems similar to cooking in botw. It's an amusing idea and I played with it. But, ultimately, I just found ways to take what I needed from it and mostly avoided it because I'm focused on completing shrines, upgrading my armor and generally making progress in the game. e.g. in my recent botw play, I mostly just would seek out and cook ingredients like truffles or durians and cook them alone because full health plus hearts was good enough (vs. the other random attack/defense/stealth bonuses which didn't seem to matter enough to worry about). The stamina foods had some value until I built my stamina up enough too. Mixing ingredients was ultimately a tedious waste of time from my perspective.

For Fuse, I could see trying a few combos (or reading about the best ones in a wiki), but then just going with a few that worked for me and not messing with it much otherwise.

We'll see, though. I'll play the game no matter what and hopefully I'll enjoy Fuse more than I think right now. None of this is a big deal or a deal breaker. If TotK is mostly BotW 2, that's fine with me. Yes, some magical new Zelda that is newer and fresher, yet incorporates some of the best bits from previous Zeldas (especially Minish Cap), would have been great. Probably that won't come until a new console happens.

I’m wondering if they’re going back to Shrines or if there will be a larger focus on dungeons. That’s really the one thing I’d like them to clear up. I’m happy with the new mechanics. Weapon durability/fuse doesn’t bother me at all, I think ultrahand looks like it’s gonna rule and add a whole new layer to the gameplay, and I can put up with cooking to an extent. I’m fine not knowing any plot details until I get in the game. I just want to know if we’re looking at a ton of full fledged dungeons like older Zelda games, or if we’re sticking to Shrines like BOTW.

I think it's safe to assume TotK is mostly like BotW, so it's unlikely they'd go back from shrines to dungeons. Maybe shrines will become more shrinier, though.

I feel the same way. While the Fuse ability does look pretty cool, it's not something I'm interested in tinkering with. I can see a lot of players spending hours and hours playing around with it, coming up with all sorts of unique combinations. But that's just not something I care to spend a lot of time on. I want to be actively playing the game.

I think I agree though with what you are saying that I hope they do more to distinguish it from botw but I think it’s going for the angle of improving and adding to the formula.

I don't see large classic dungeons given the new abilities. It looks like it's doubling down on the open world sandbox world (i.e. exploration is paramount with experimentation being a bigger focus). I'm pumped, plus I got my fork!

Edit: Looking at the world, I'm guessing more of the same. Mini-dungeons (shrines or equivalent) and a handful of medium dungeons (like divine beasts).

Not necessarily. I mean, most people figured this was the direction they would go, but it really wasn't confirmed until the first teaser trailer which came out June 2021. But even though we've known since then that they were re-using the same overworld from BotW, it wasn't clear just how different it was going to be. Now that we've gotten more glimpses from a few different trailers, it's looking more and more like not too much has changed. My hope was either 1) the landscape would be heavily altered, possibly from a long passing of time or some huge catastrophe, or 2) there would be some sort of dark/alternate version of the BotW Hyrule (the original cinematic trailer pointed toward this, IMO). Classic dungeons on top of that would be enough change for me.

I think I agree though with what you are saying that I hope they do more to distinguish it from botw but I think it’s going for the angle of improving and adding to the formula. What are you hoping they add? I’d love to see large dungeons of old and some classic Zelda items such as hook shot
What I really want is a Zelda game that's more like the older Zelda games in terms of progression, story, dungeons, etc. I would just want it to take place in a huge, interactive world like BotW, with most of the new stuff that game introduced. But, I've known for a while that it's extremely unlikely that they would steer too far off the direction that BotW took things. I mentioned earlier in the thread why classic dungeons really don't make sense in the type of Zelda game that BotW (and TotK) is. Most of the classic items are made irrelevant by the new abilities too. You don't need a hook shot when you can just climb and paraglide everywhere.

Better than the GS bonus. I'll switch over my pre-order for the CE if I see a chance, but don't expect it.

I kinda want these. Not exactly sure why though 😅. If anyone happens to be getting these with the Japanese version, and wants to sell/trade them, please let me know.

It's 7920 Yen, which is around 59-60 USD. The only reason I didn't order it is because I want the English version of the game.

If you're okay with the Japanese version of the game, uoud actually be saving yourself 10 dollars. (I didn't count shipping. Maybe it's free because it's directly from Amazon Japan? I don't know)

Ah, spoon and fork require a big combo. Either all amiibos, both zelda, or bundled with a non CE switch. Silly.

Shane12m wrote: What I really want is a Zelda game that's more like the older Zelda games in terms of progression, story, dungeons, etc.
If they wanted to, they absolutely could. The shrines in BotW didn't allow climbing. So the walls could be unclimbable and then have hookshot locations. Then you can use the hookshot to make travel easier in the overworld. It also appears as though they are getting rid of bombs...a bomb bag seems like a no brainer as a dungeon upgrade. How about instead of weapons that you use to get through the dungeon and fight the boss, you get special upgrades that you couldn't get elsewhere...things you don't need to get through the overworld portion of the game, but maybe something that makes life easier.

I don't know. It seems to me that if they wanted to add dungeons, they could figure it out. We KNOW that the 120 shrines and the 4 divine beasts will not be returning, so they HAVE to replace them with something. Even if they are not the traditional dungeons from previous Zeldas, I would still take something. Maybe mini-dungeons, each with some tough enemies at the end and then a larger dungeon in each of the game's big sections with a large and unique boss (similar to the divine beasts but none of this XXXblight Ganon crap).

I loved Breath of the Wild. I know people had legitimate complaints (weapon breaking system, empty overworld, lack of enemy variety), but the shrine similarity and 4 divine beasts with 4 generic bosses were easily my biggest issue. There is nothing unique about any of those things. I HATED the beasts, even more on my second playthrough. One of my favorite parts of BotW was the island where they take all your stuff away and you have to complete it with the items you find on the island. I would love to see more of places like that.

Well, they haven't come out and said anything about that, but we've seen areas in the demonstrations where there were shrines they are now missing. We also have clearly seen that Link doesn't have the Sheikah Slate anymore, so he has no ability to open the shrines. They will have something to replace them, but it's interesting that were a month away and we still have no idea what those things are.

My theory/hope is that we're going to get a series of underground caves that we can get into because Ganon's magic created a powerful earthquake that opens these areas up. I can see those caves being similar in size to the shrines, and then the larger temples/dungeons being in the sky. We've seen a large building in the demo they could definitely be a large temple of sorts...but we still have no idea.

Really miss the days when there was 1 preorder and it wasn't exclusive to stores. With CE's, store exclusives, and foreign exclusives, TotK is going to have 10+ exclusive bundles if not way more.

Honestly I feel that's generous with modern consoles... there hasn't been a significant leap since what, PS2 to 3? Switch is a handheld competing amongst consoles. They only need to be at the entry level of "modern" consoles to compete (and win).

Haha, no. They're $80 post tax, figure $7-$10 for shipping, $5 for my time and savings.

Bought one for my sister, one for my brother, one to collect, one to play upstairs, one for downstairs... And realized no, that's dumb, gonna keep just one and throw it on a shelf to collect dust. Gotta stop being insane with the spending.

To be fair, after msrp cost + tx + shipping, 95 is really not that much more than it would be. A couple dollars, which I'd view as a tip for someone, not to mention an item that's sold out.

Did you see my follow up? Is asking $5 for my time to repackage, drive to ups, ship, and save you ebay scalper prices... Wrong? If so, I'll gladly cancel the orders.

Thank you. I've massively over tipped, and over paid, here (multiple times) when people snag me sold out items. I didn't think $5 was asking much when I've many times just asked for exact cost.

I just mean a game that interests me big time. Fallen Order was addictive as hell while I was playing through the story, so I just plowed through it. Similar recent experiences for games like Spider-man PS4/Miles Morales, Red Dead Redemption II & Ghost of Tsushima. Heck, same deal as BOTW. I ended up putting a LOT of hours into BOTW but I plowed through the story portion fairly quickly.
