not sure really. I mean I have backlogs on other systems. I have some big ones like Xenoblade 3, Pokemon Violet, and there are 2 newer games I really want, Crisis Core and Dragon Quest Treasures that I haven't bought yet. And Spark of Life is just not high on my want list.

Backlogs become more like collections, like an action figure you think is cool but never open and play with it.

yes a while back I sold some games off to lower my backlog, but I end up having to buy them again because I actually want to play them. But some games I sell that I'm perfectly fine with never playing again. I've just been buying some 360 and wii games I actually want to play.

Glad they did the demo. After 10 tries or so I couldn't beat the first boss. After the weirdness, easy pass.

Yah, I think for $30. I had a small amount of buyer’s remorse for spending that on Oregon Trail of all things, but that feeling has gone away. Having a ton of fun with it.

My #2 game this year was apparently smash bros despite me not playing it at all this year.
Then I remembered the conventions where my switch was used and Smash running throughout the weekend

I haven't gone online with my switch in quite awhile, so the results I got from year in review aren't so accurate.
But what I got was:
1. Hades
2. Kirby Star Allies
3. Minecraft Dungeons
Hades is definitely most played for this year for me. 100-200 hours. Great game.

Hades... I bought it physical when it sold out nearly everywhere. Never opened it. Nearly bought it digital on sale, but felt that would be stupid for a game I've never played in a genre I've never really played enough to say I'm a fan.

As far as what's different, I don't see hours played. Which is fine, because I'll never beat my high a few years back since I play all my different consoles now. I think I had 2400 hours or something like that a few years back.

I'm seeking to get a schmup - I'm down to either Crimzon Clover or waiting til tomorrow for Akai Kitana, anyone have any input on this? I never played Akai Kitana, and honestly haven't solidly played a schmup in a long time, but really craving it lately once I discovered a bunch through Yurukill.

My top 3 games played this year were Splatoon 3, Yoshi's Crafted World, and Rocket League. Truth be told, my top played games this year were on Xbox. I switched over to Rocket League on my Series S because it is so much better (faster, smoother, and Ethernet connection). I played the crap out of Elden Ring, Hades, Rocket League, and a bunch of other games.
Splatoon 3 (mostly Salmon Run) made up about 90% of my Switch time this year.

Beat Portal. First new to me game I've beaten in quite some time. Pretty slow start and middle. Really picked up at the end. I'm going to wait a little while to jump into Portal 2.

fire emblem engage
octopath traveller II
tales of symphonia remastered
Advance Wars remake still withstanding
Pikmin 4 (maybe?)
And Nintendo usually doesn't tells what's coming after the next 3-6 months.

I think Pikmin 4 in 2023 is a bit of wishful thinking, but I'd sure love it. I think 2024 is a bit more likely unfort.
Otherwise, I'd say other than Zelda, I'm also excited to varying degrees for:
-Kirby: Return to Dreamland Deluxe (not huge into Kirby but I could probably go in on this one)
-Disney Illusion Land (a Mickey Mouse platformer but where all the characters are drawn in that old school, classic style. Looks decently fun.)
-It's a Wonderful Life (bringing my favorite Harvest Moon game to Switch is neat)
Hogwarts Legacy is also slated for Switch in July (months after it drops for other consoles), but I'm sure most folks who want to play that will be doing so without the Switch.
There are some YouTubers suggesting that 2023 may see Mario Odyssey 2, a new Donkey Kong game, and Metroid Prime 4... does anyone know if there's any credibility to any of that?

I'm so ready for a new 3D Mario. I really hope we get one next year, it's been too long. I'd be happy with Odyssey 2, 3D World 2, Galaxy 3, a new Mario in the style of Mario 64, or something brand new! I'm also ready for the Prime remasters to start dropping, I've been itching to give that series another shot.

I've heard people suggest that was a mix-up in translation or something and the Pikmin he was talking about was that lame spin-off that released on 3DS in 2017.

The new update for TMNT Cowabunga Collection adds online multiplayer for SNES Turtles in Time, and different color palettes for the GB games. They also changed the home icon because people were whining about it lol.

I finally started playing Cuphead. Just beat Grim Matchstick which was the first boss to really give me a lot of trouble. What’s annoying is that I eventually learned that I was making it harder by using the homing shot during phase 3. I didn’t realize that hitting those fireballs is what made them split. I thought that was happening automatically. I switched over to the lobber and beat it pretty easily. Besides this one, most bosses haven’t taken too many attempts. (Baroness lady only took one.)
Really enjoying the game and probably should have played it sooner.

Which isle were you on? They added a cheat in the DLC update that lets you summon the genie for double health. You can use it 3 times on a first run, and indefinitely after you’ve beaten the game. (Doesn’t work on expert mode.) Just rotate the analog stick in a circle to summon the genie.

There have been quite a few sales on the Japanese 3DS eshop.
As far as US stuff, a lot of Capcom games are on sale, as well as Culdcept Revolt and Rpg maker fes. Plus a lot of shovelware and a few decent small publisher titles
To my knowledge, if there are any planned last hurrah sales, nothing gas been announced.

First posted user reviews are mostly bad. Complaints of game breaking bugs, poor performance, and generally just bad game design. The bugs and performance should be fixable I hope. I remember the first one had at least one game breaking glitch that I never saw.
I'm worried about the performance complaints though as this game has been in development over 5 years. Scope creep leading to a poor game has been brought up a few times which was one of my major concerns. Hopefully some sites can put up some reviews, and they can quickly patch the perfmance/glitch issues.
It's a shame as I have a $10 gift card and nothing to buy now.

That's very disappointing, especially because like you said, this was in development for quite a few years. I already bought the game, but now I know not to bother playing it until it gets patched up. Maybe this dev deliberately chose not to send out review copies for that reason.

I was reading/watching more about that recent exploit that could allow hackers to take over your system and I was surprised that this goes beyond Nintendo's 1st party titles on Wii U, 3DS and Switch. It was actually first discovered in 2016 when a modder was snooping around in Mario Kart Wii's code (but has since been discovered in Mario Kart DS which was all the way back from 2005).
Since at that time Nintendo didn't have any kind of bounty for hackers to be rewarded for submitting that kind of info, the hackers just kept it to themselves. But they did make codes that could essentially brick other players' consoles, or remotely install CFW. By 2016 you'd need a modded console to play Wii or DS games online anyway.
But stuff like Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon on Wii U haven't been patched yet and the full list of games affected by this exploit is bigger than what has been released publicly so far. And Nintendo's bounty payouts to these groups has been pretty low all things considered (one guy getting $577 for an exploit that could have potentially ended up costing Nintendo millions of dollars). There's actually a group of Japanese hackers that are active in Mario Kart 7 and resetting other players' VR ratings in online lobbies at the push of a button and they didn't submit their exploit for a bounty, they chose to just be butt-holes.

That ol' Larry Laffer has still got it, let's go boys.
lol truthfully, I love point and click games and discovered LSL when I was first getting into them so there's a nostalgia factor for me with this series. They're not particularly great, but I love crude humor and Larry is such a dork, I had to give these new ones a go. Plus boobs.

I'm finally trying Dead Cells again. I tried it a few years ago and lost interest pretty quickly. I guess my hangup is I don't really know what I'm supposed to be doing. Just try not to die???
I have never been a huge fan of rogue-likes, but I'm to the point now where I get annoyed every time I see another one. It sounds like a cool idea....randomly generated levels so they're never the same. But it seems like a lazy copout now. Concepts like level design and progression just non-existent.

For instance, when I was playing Slay the Spire and Hades, although level design doesn't change much, there's definitely progression and a deep and intricate level of synergy going on. Something that non rogues don't usually have nearly that much of.

I got Pokemon Scarlet for Christmas and have been playing through it. I've beaten 2 gyms, 2 titans, and I'm about to attack my first team star base. I'm glad they finally made a 3D Pokemon game with a huge open world, with free-roaming Pokemon. This is the style I've been wanting for a long time. I don't mind the poor graphics too much. I mean, better graphics would be great, but I don't think I would want it to look TOO realistic. I prefer a more cartoonish look for Pokemon. But, the poor performance is frustrating. They really need to make some other improvements too, like giving us a way to sort Pokemon in boxes. I loved the way Let's Go did it. You just had one giant box and could sort on various criteria. I'm really hoping they add that soon.

I haven't played it yet, but my understanding is that it's open world with free roaming Pokemon, but doesn't have (or has very little) trainer/gym battles. Also, it doesn't have the traditional catch method where you battle the Pokemon and then catch it, you just throw Pokeballs. So it had some of what I was hoping for, but Scarlet/Violet has it all.

Arceus wasn't really open world either. It was segmented, like Witcher 3 and the Xenoblade games. The areas weren't nearly as large as in those games.

I read a story about it that said it was a pitch document from Retro Studios that Nintendo dismissed outright and that's as far as it ever got.
Personally, I wouldn't consider a pitch from an excited dev (even one who is affiliated with Nintendo) to be a "lost" game.
Otherwise all those fangames that get shut down should be considered that too.

yeah, i actually watched this when the video was originally posted. its getting a ton of traction now because N fought them to take it down, but the channel won (incredibly rare).
sounds like it could have been a really cool idea if executed, but i'm sure that happens on a monthly basis at most devs lol

The same story I read mentioned that they appealed the DMCA notice, and Nintendo just hadn't respond after two weeks, so it was automatically reinstated.
If N wants to take further action they still can, though there doesn't seem to be much of a reason based on the fact that this never got past the pitch stage.

I hope it puts Three Houses to shame. I found Three Houses to be a bit boring, great combat as always, but boring. Really didn't like the huge main base hub either.

Agreed. I wonder how much was lost in translation in the pitch document, and how much N already had planned for Retro (much to their dismay). Sounds like the latter.
Hearing they were burnt out during MP2 is not surprising to me. That game completely failed to grab me. After trying to get into it multiple times, burned me out on the series as a consumer. I bought MP3, but dropped it after only an hour or so and never went back.
I'm hoping 4 will be great whenever it drops, but after the success of Dread I have a feeling they are shifting development more towards that direction and further away from the exploration the series was known for. One possible explanation for seeing nothing to date.

I just picked up the following games on sale on the eShop:
Cathedral
Dead Cells: The Queen and the Sea DLC
Rogue Legacy
Considering Getsu Fūma Den: Undying Moon as well but might wait until it’s even cheaper down the road.

Today I learned that MyNintendo coins expire
Although there's nothing currently in the rewards that I really want, it's a waste to let the coins go to waste. Oh well. Something to keep in mind for next time. On a side note, imo, the Club Nintendo rewards in the past were much better than the rewards offered now. Gold Nunchuks? Figurines? Way better.

I learned the gold ones expired last month. Was saving them in case I ever wanted a digital game that was over $20 since I won't spend cash outright. Then got an email showing I had gold ones expiring. I miss club nintendo.

I always set a reminder on my calendar for when my Platinum coins expire....then I spend a bunch on the MyNintendo physical rewards and jsut pay the $6.99 shipping. I usually spend 2000+ coins at a time which then buys me 3 months before the next round of expiring coins.
I always spend my Gold coins on the next digitial purchase. Since I rarely buy a full price $59.99 game on the eShop, I never worry about them expiring.

I literally just opened the button set the other day. My lady needed some buttons and that’s an item that has stayed at its value. But dang those buttons are a pain. Luke the back is made for storage but I feel like I’m going to stab myself trying to ion it

Had an order of import games come in today. Among other things, it included 5 Mahjong games on Nintendo systems (4 on DS, 1 on Switch). Looking forward to trying them out.
Also finally got a Koopa Troopa amiibo, which I have been looking for a good price on for a couple of years. It was also part of that order.

I'll try to pick up another extra copy next time I order. I tried (because you never know who is going to want a copy LOL), but they were out of stock last time.
One of the ones I picked up was Konami's Mahjong Fight Club, which features 48 real life JPML players as opponents, and is pretty highly regarded.

I actually picked it up initially because I wanted a Mahjong game beyond the free mobile games, and it was both fully featured and family friendly. (Well, the game itself is family friendly. No guarantee the things you shout at Toadsworth as he scores a high point hand will be as family friendly).
There was one part of the mission mode that I had trouble with - It's one of last missions so you are playing against some of the higher level AI, and you have to bankrupt a specific opponent. Anyone who has played Mahjong knows it can be tough enough to even win a game, but targeting a specific player is much more difficult. That mission was even harder than the final one.

So I tried out Mahjong Fight Club today. It's good but definitely not as beginner friendly as Yakuman DS.
Though I suppose that's to be expected with the JPML license attached.

Fire Emblem Engage came out today. I thought it had already released. Reviews are generally good, and it sounds like they ditched the 3 Houses stuff and went back to the basics. I'll probably give it a look when it goes on sale. Three Houses kinda burned me out on the series, and maybe someday Advanced Wars will get a release.

My Divine Edition just came in, and of course GameStop didn't send the exclusive tarot cards. Not a big deal. I've played a couple of chapters. I like the fact that it's more combat focused, and the Engage system seems fun.

They don’t send them in the mail. It’s in store only, if you ordered online you can take your receipt to the store and get yours apparently but it’s while supplies last

Yeah, I see that they changed the description. It originally said that the cards would ship with online orders. I'm good, I would just put them in storage with other pre-order bonus junk I have. I'm up to Chapter 6 now. It's 26 chapters overall and 15 paralogues if anyone is wondering.

Yeah, it's more focused on combat. The Somniel (hub area) has a bunch of really pointless mini games and stuff, but it's all optional. You don't have to go there between battles if you don't want to. You can even access shops from the world map. The Arena is the most useful thing, since it's free experience. You can do it for any character 3 times after every battle.

I'm not necessarily talking about Goldeneye, that one gets a pass because they're apparently revamping the controls and everything, but there's a literal no excuse for NES, SNES or Genesis.

They aren't revamping the controls on Switch... that's supposedly only for Xbox. NES and SNES are basically done first party minus some less popular titles and ones they don't own all the rights to. So everything else will cost them $.
Still excited for 007 on Switch. Unfortunately I have a feeling it will play like crap on a standard controller, and I don't really want to buy an N64 online controller for one game when they are still being scalped (I never pay a premium thus don't buy scalped crap). Will see on Friday I guess.
On a side note, I have no plans on getting an Xbox, but I really hate they omitted online play for them. That really sucks the "best" version is local only.

@KCPenguins Oh what the frig? I thought the controls were getting a Switch makeover. Well that significantly dampens my hype for its release. Phooey.
And I also didn't realize how close they were to being done with first party SNES/NES games... or how lacking that library is at the end of the day. They should 100% shell out for some other games. Get some NHL on there damnit!

I played Goldeneye pretty recently and was surprised how much it held up. Although this is coming from a 39 year old who lived and breathed the N64/PSX days. I imagine a 15-25 year old would hate these. Which is great, a bunch of old folks playing a multiplayer FPS. I might stand a chance haha.
I have often wondered what games hold up and what don't in the eyes of the younger generation. Home consoles have been around 50 years now and have been a part of pop culture for at least 35 of those years. Alot of games those of us born in the early 80s would call classic but would kids coming up today consider them good. That's why I don't really mind remakes, brings classic story and gameplay with modern graphics.

The game looks great, unfortunately it plays exactly as I thought it would without an N64 controller. If Xbox got updated modern controls, it's the winner. I'll probably try playing around with custom buttons, but like most n64 games, this just doesn't work well on a standard controller. Hopefully N gets there head out of their ass and releases a decent supply of n64 controllers.

Count me in the minority, I still love it.
Tons of articles and videos on customizing controls already. I had plans to try to somewhat replicate the n64 controls on joycon, but many are showing adjustments to make it "modern" fps controls. Will be playing around with it at home later this afternoon. Once I get something I like best believe I'm ripping through single player again, at least on agent mode.

GoldenEye was one of the few Nintendo 64 games that supported dual analog sticks by plugging in a second controller (for campaign mode), so that part at least should've translated well to a modern controller.

You will have to remap controls outside of the game using the Switch controller mapping setting. (I presume, haven't looked at the details). This will change the button mapping for all games, but you can always go back to defaults.

Adjusted the controls to "standard" on Switch and it's much better. Next up, break out the pro controller and try it docked.
Update: Halfway through single player with pro controller docked. This is pretty awesome. No issues with slow down so far, graphics crisp 64 bits. Having fun trying to remember what to do. Getting all cheats likely beyond my current ability, not sure if you get the same speed in this control style with strafing forward. This isn't n64 Goldeneye, but it's a bastard child with modern controls. I'm excited.

For years, I thought the Donkey Kong game I loved as a kid was "Mario vs. Donkey Kong" on GBA but anytime I played that game, it was fine but it never felt right. Welp I JUST realized that the game I was ACTUALLY thinking of was the original Game Boy game simply titled "Donkey Kong". The game has GB versions of the original arcade levels, but then the Mario vs. DK style levels kick in with new enemies and the whole key shtick. I never realized it was this game for years because it's just called "Donkey Kong" so I just assumed it was a port of the arcade game with nothing else. Weird. Anyhow, very pumped to replay this one. I just love the level designs. They need to make more games like this bad boy.

Well... they've been pushing this for quite some time.
Also many headlines are saying it's only for "thin people". I'm 6 foot, and my waistline is 34. Per BMI I'm considered obese... Good to see the media considers me thin while rail thin models are being depicted as "healthy".

Well... they've been pushing this for quite some time.
Also many headlines are saying it's only for "thin people". I'm 6 foot, and my waistline is 34. Per BMI I'm considered obese... Good to see the media considers me thin while rail thin models are being depicted as "healthy".

Pretty sure I'm obese by bmi as well, 34 waist. Every NFL player is probably considered morbidly obese.

Yeah, BMI is crap for how basic it is. I had 3% body fat once and was on the fringe of overweight according to bmi. If I bulked up a little more (5 pounds) I would've been considered overweight despite being in phenomenal shape.

What's the outlook on the Switch 2 or whatever is next for Nintendo? I'm thinking about buying a Switch OLED but don't want to if Nintendo may drop a new console this year.

Well, it's been rumored since 2017 when the Switch dropped, so there's no telling.

NES - 10/18/85
SNES - 8/23/91
N64 - 9/29/96
GC - 11/18/01
Wii - 11/19/06
WiiU - 11/18/12
Switch - 3/3/17
Their main console releases have always been about 5-6 years apart, so I wouldn't be surprised if we see the Switch's successor release at the end of this year. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if they milk the Switch even longer given how successful it's been. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Switch's successor is basically just a more powerful Switch, which could very easily feel more like a revision instead of a next-gen console for them.

I remember hearing the Switch was planned to be a 5 year system and that was in 2017. We’re almost at 6 years in 2023 so I guess Covid probably delayed their timeline on a new console but it should be soon I hope. The hardware of the Switch is so dated it’s so hard to play anything new anymore. Bayonetta 3 and Mario and Rabbids Sparks of hope are kinda awful to play in handheld mode. They’re very choppy.

I'd like a new console sooner rather than later. I don't buy multiplatform games on Switch anymore, I don't even take it out of the house anymore so the benefit of playing games portable is a non-factor for me at this point. All I'd ask of them is to make it backwards compatible because I still have so many unplayed games on it.
I wonder if they'll follow the competition and go the two SKU route at launch and have one for digital only at a cheaper price?

How they handle all the games we purchased Digital is how I will decide if I buy the Next Nintendo Console. Minimum like Sony, Day one Support if like Microsoft. I am not starting over again.

I know Nintendo always does their own thing but I think they would have huge success if they just released a Switch Pro at this point that was BC but had more horsepower for new titles and could at least do better with PS5/XSX ports. We're past the point where the lesser Switch version is still acceptable imho.
If the next system doesn't support Switch BC I think that would ensure the Switch sticks around much, much longer and would really impact new sales.

Wii played GC and WiiU played Wii and 3DS played DS, so I assume the New Console will play Switch Games but this is the minimum, I want much better support than Wii to WiiU digital and wont pay $1-$2 to upgrade each game or worse. Microsoft BC is the way I want Sony and Nintendo to go in the Future. If they must make a unique feature just make the portable docked and undocked Super Mushroom Power. We dont need to wave the wiimotes or joycons. Sony’s Dualsense if they must but their Pro Controller is just fine, MS basically kept theirs the same a round. At $500 they could make something amazing, they charge $300 now for a hybrid $200 for just a portable. Make the Next one $500 on par with the two competitors 3 year ole tech and Pop it out Late October or Early November, and we camp out in front of the stores…..
MS BC
Xbox SX n PS5 Power
OLED Portable with fixed Controllers no joycons (dualsense Triggers) Battery Life 4 Hours at least
Controller Current Pro
Dock features from Current OLED version
MSRP $499
Optional Dualsense Style Controller is the New Pro

I don't see Nintendo's next system being $500. The new special edition OLED Switches are the most expensive systems Nintendo has ever released, at $360. Enough power might push to $400, but Nintendo's not been about raw power for a while now…

-minecraft legends
-megaman battle network collection
-digimon world
-fatal frame
-Atelier ryza 3

The first big trailer for BotW that showed off a lot of gameplay and stuff dropped in June 2016 during their E3 Direct, 9 months before the game actually released. We're already way behind that. The game comes out in 3 months and all we've gotten are a couple vague trailers that showed almost nothing. I honestly can't believe they've waited this long to show us more. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if the game gets pushed back again.

I don't have any predictions, but I'll post my ongoing wish list:
1) Mario Kart 9 - MK8 came out in 2014! I know they ported it to the Switch, but still, it's time for some new Mario Kart! I'd love to see them go full Smash Kart in the next one, bringing in way more characters from non-Mario games. Not so much for the characters though, I really don't care who I play as, I just like that it would open up tons of new level possibilities. Unfortunately, we won't be getting a new Mario Kart any time soon since they're only halfway through the Booster Course Pass, but it's still my top want. I want a brand new Mario Kart, danggit!
2) 2D Zelda - Not a port or a remake, just a brand new 2D Zelda game without any (stupid) gimmicks.
3) Donkey Kong Country 4 - More like the original trilogy, not Returns/Tropical Freeze. I know this is incredibly unlikely, but it's staying on my list anyway.
4) 2D Mario - something new that breaks free from the tired NSMB formula. A 2D Odyssey with Cappy could be great!
5) 3D Mario - I'd be happy with 3D World 2, Galaxy 3, Odyssey 2, something similar to SM64, or something brand new! I do think the next one will be a sequel though.
6) Yoshi's Woolly World port - Besides TP:HD and WW:HD (which I do think will find their way to the Switch eventually) this is the only Wii U game I care about that hasn't either been ported or gotten a superior sequel. It's one of my favorite games, and I would really love to have access to it on the Switch.
7) Pokemon, Let's Go (Gen 2) - I loved the unique mechanics of the first one, and really hope to see more gens clremade in a similar way.
8) F-Zero - I had dropped this one from my list for a while after playing Fast Racing Neo and being very disappointed. But, it's back on the list now because I'm sure Nintendo would do a much better job.
9) Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons remake - After playing the Link's Awakening remake, I wanted them to remake these two games in the same style. Now, I'm not so sure that style makes as much sense for the Oracle games. They're a bit darker/grittier than LA, and don't have the whole dream aspect. Either way, I'd love to see them remade!
10) 3D Zelda ports/collection - Ideally, we'd get a collection of all the pre-SS 3D Zelda games, so the 3DS versions of OoT and MM, TP:HD, and WW:HD. But, it's Nintendo, so I know that's asking a LOT. It's hard to see them not releasing TP:HD and WW:HD as stand-alones, we all know they'd sell like crazy. So, I don't really know what to expect, I just know I'd like to see these games become available on Switch.
11) Metroid Prime Trilogy - I've wanted to give this series another chance for a while, and would really love to do so on the Switch if at all possible. I really hope we get the whole trilogy at once, not individual releases. Since they released the trilogy as one product on the Wii, I have hope that they'll do the same next time.
12) 2D Metroid - I'd be fine with a brand new one, or a remake. I thoroughly enjoyed Samus Returns and Dread, so I want 2D Metroid games to keep coming!
13) DS/3DS Player - something like the GBA Player, but for DS and 3DS games. Not exactly sure how this would work, maybe some add-on to the dock that could communicate with the Switch wirelessly, so the Switch itself would be the controller and bottom screen, and the add-on would display the top screen on the tv. It's not perfect, but I think it could work, and it would be great to be able to play ALL handheld Nintendo games on a TV.

As cool as this would be, it makes zero sense financially for N to do it.
The Super Game Boy and the GameCube GBA player both came out when releases for those respective handhelds were going strong.
3DS releases were drying up by 2018, and there were only a handful of releases in the first half of 2019. There have been a few novelty releases after that, but nothing from Nintendo themselves. Original DS releases ended in 2014.
Unless Nintendo just bought a big stake in eBay, they have no reason to introduce new hardware to play out of print DS/3DS games.
It's more likely they would just add a few select releases to Switch Online (since Virtual Console seems to be a thing of the past)

On a side note - obligatory temper expectations on the direct post. Every direct people post crazy expectations, then when the direct hits only 2 or 3 things land from people's wish list and everyone doges about how terrible it was.
It's the winter direct. There's not going to be a ton of surprises, and of the few there are only maybe 1 or 2 might interest you in some degree.

I think bare bones is the template for Nintendo's B-Tier releases nowadays (including sports games), relying on post-launch updates to keep people interested/playing.

I don't have any predictions, but I'll post my ongoing wish list: 1) Mario Kart 9 - MK8 came out in 2014!
I would obviously love this, but with TotK coming out soon, there is zero chance of this happening.
My prediction is a spinoff game based on the movie based on the game.
Believe it or not, this is my biggest want (or the rumored remake of MP1). I just want to play this again with cleaned up graphics, widescreen support (without paying over $150 for GameCube component wires) and no friggin waggle.
Beyond this, my prediction is we'll get Pikmin 4 soon. I'm thinking of a May or maybe June release. And at some point, they are going to have to start talking about the 2nd half of the year. They need to keep people interested and excited for the future.

so, not things that were on people's lists, but big budget 1st (or 2nd) party games nonetheless

I thought by the time the GBA Player came out, the GBA was mostly over. I just looked it up, the GBA Player came out in June 2003, and the DS in Nov 2004. It's definitely much later this time around, in comparison, but not entirely outside the realm of possibility. But that's just my wish list, and I understand that one is a huge long shot lol

The only expectation I have going into this one is that they need to show us more of TotK. Aside from that, I'll be happy with whatever we get. My list I posted is just my ongoing wish list, games I hope we get. I'm not expecting them to announce any of those games tomorrow (although, I would love for them to of course!)
...THAT said...I've been fairly disappointed in the Directs for a while now. Most of them have 1 maybe 2 things I'm actually interested in, and the rest is mostly 3rd party stuff I don't care about at all. I'm always happy to see Nintendo getting good 3rd party support since that was a huge issue with the Wii U. But, I just feel like the first party releases have in turn slowed down a bit. So if I'm negative after a Direct, it's simply because there wasn't much for me personally, not that I expected specific things and didn't get exactly what I wanted.

I'm with you. The directs have been super disappointing for me lately. Most of the 3rd party stuff hasn't been interesting to me. Lots of farming simulators and anime style games. I'm obviously super excited for Zelda TotK. Give me Metroid, Pikmin, and Mario and I'll be happy. I'm a simple man.

Don't forget the GBA SP also came out in early 2003. A lot of the GBA'S most popular games were released in 2003 or later. Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire and the Gen 1 remakes, Golden Sun 2, Zelda Minish Cap, Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, Metroid Zero Mission, and more.

I don't think we'll get a lot of info on TotK as I'm expecting it will get its own mini direct in a late March or early April. So perhaps a time frame for that, the announcement of the SEs, the leaked TotK themed OLED Switch and maybe a short clip to go along with it.
I'm expecting more info and hype on known games with a few surprises, which by most accounts one will be Sluggers. Really not a lot...

I pay full price for very few games anyway. Still lame if $70 becomes the new standard for Nintendo games though. it will just be that much longer before games drop to a price that I'm willing to pay.

Yeah, it was $60 up until yesterday I think. Saw a bunch of CAG/Wario posts going nuts about the $70 price, then it was taken down. Who knows what actually happened ... but safe to assume it'll all get situated after the Direct today. Needless to say, we're overdue for the hike to $70, and being that both Sony/Microsoft are doing it ... Nintendo sure as crap will do it too.

Oh! I didn’t know about the price hike. I’m not totally surprised (or even think it’s necessarily unfair given how much it takes to make a AAA game, but I doubt I’d pay $70 + tax for a game with last gen tech.

I wonder if TotK is going to have some sort of pack-in and that's why it's $70.

I guess it leaked a little earlier than intended, but a new Samba De Amigo title is supposed to be in the Nintendo Direct.

So much rumored stuff comes to light. Never played Dead Cells, but that Castlevania DLC looked great. Excited for GB/GBA games; where's Donkey Kong?! Not sure if I'll get Prime just yet. TotK Trailer gave me some concerns (I'm worried they are taking it the MM direction when I want OoT 2 if that makes sense), but will wait for the mini direct. Yay Advanced Wars is coming in what looks like without a filter. A lot more new stuff announced than I thought. N Loves to cater to Japan.

Buy the remaster of Prime or just emulate the original trilogy on the Steam Deck with mods? Looking forward to some comparison videos in the future.

Dead Cells is amazing. They keep refining the game and adding DLC, both free and paid. Totally worth getting digitally.
GB/GBC/GBA games on Switch Online + Expansion Pass is awesome. Was hoping Mother 3 would be announced.
Some of the other stuff are nice, like Advance Wars, Pikmin 4, Samba de Amigo, Baten Kaitos I+II HD Remaster
Stealth eShop drop of Metroid Prime Remastered is a nice surprise. I beat it on Wii as part of the Trilogy release and have no plans to ever play it again. Definitely need to play Echoes and Corruption at some point via the Wii U in Wii mode.

Most excited for the Level 5 stuff.
After binging the original Fantasy Life the past couple months the announcement of a new one was perfectly timed for me.
And new Professor Layton means maybe the old ones can get a re-release too. Always great when people can bypass scalpers.
DecaPolice looks weird and fun too.

Finally an Advance Wars release date. Been my number one want for years. Not too much else I’m excited about this go around. I’ll prob pick up that Minecraft for the kids and possibly that Mickey game. Not sure if anyone has watched that version of the Mickey cartoon but it’s fudging hilarious. Reminds me a lot of rent and stimpy type animation and humor.
I grew up on gameboy and don’t need to relive it but would like to play some advance games. They won’t release it but I would love to play Metal of Honor Infiltrator or Metal Gear Solid again.
