I have a PSP 3000 I bought at launch, and it's gently used. It started screeching. I don't or won't attempt any repair myself. If you don't know me the thing about me is I like my systems really minty. So if I were to buy a cheap used PSP, I would want to replace the entire shell and buttons and sticks.
So it's either get this one fixed from someone here, or maybe someone I trust here can recommend someone. Because I don't want to send it to a stranger offering the service on ebay. Or I abandon my PSP and sell my small PSP collection. Otherwise I'd be buying a brand new never used PSP for several hundred dollars to get one in that unused condition. And of course that's a gamble as well. So the other options are better.
Since we have to list a price here I'll just throw out $50 + I pay shipping both ways.

You have CFW on it? It's incredibly easy. I don't even bother testing the UMD drives on my units anymore.
It's funny you made this thread. I have like 4-5 spare psp 3Ks in various states that I need to sort out. plus two oem batteries. I've already started swapping around the top casings, buttons and battery covers, even if the colors don't match, so they end up looking kinda gnarly. I plan to "rescue" one or two of them and make them as good as I can, throw some games on it, and just sell the rest for parts.
I tried to replace a UMD drive exactly once, long ago. It did not go so well. It was before I got into CFW so I feel kind of embarrassed in hindsight, because if I had just done that I wouldn't have broke it.

no I don't have CFW. Nor am I gonna install it. I don't think I need a parts replacement, just lubrication. It still reads discs fine. Just started making that noise recently.

Your fault is the motor in your UMD drive. This can be repaired by replacing just the motor with a donor PSP but a replacement UMD drive assembly can be purchased for $20 or less. I've also seen people lubricate the motor with oil on a cotton swab. If you open the drive, and look down into the slot, on the bottom-left you can see a white gear. That's the motor in the UMD drive, so you can give that a shot. If you have the ability to use a screwdriver and follow a Youtube disassembly video, you can replace the UMD assembly with no issues. There's no soldering involved with replacing the UMD assembly. Also, just a heads up, I've never been able to find a good quality replacement shell on PSPs unless they came from a donor console. The aftermarket shells/buttons are all pretty bad quality.

Thanks I've watched some vids about the lubrication, good to know exactly what to replace now. It will help me knowing it's the motor. I appreciate the tips but I have zero interest in ever doing any of that repair stuff. Doing custom firmware stuff is my limit.
Now I just need a replacement motor repair service. Otherwise I get to pad my bank account some more.

Psp is a console I'm surprised I didn't have. And I generally game handheld. I feel as if I missed out on a whole library of great Sony exclusive games.

You have one? If you do/did, any particular favorite games?

Jeanne D’Arc was my favorite PSP game. Super highly recommended and I wish we’d get a sequel/remaster on modern consoles.

yes, PLAY JEANNE D'ARC for sure! Definitely a gem on the PSP.
-both god of war games
-ys seven is really good
-popolocrois' only official US version and it's a charming little RPG
Since I'm mostly an RPGer those are my main ones. But there's lots of little gems. There's a motorstorm game on it in the arctic, riiiiidge racceeerrrrrrr, lol, half minute hero, a growlanser game. plus portable versions of final fantasy tactics, valkyrie profile, tactics ogre, and many others.
and it's not super expensive to collect for like the DS.

I thought Jeanne was crap. FFT much better for sure. Ys and God of War are only ok. I recommend Rengoku 2. The Motorstorm game is really sweet. Burnout Dominator also. Definitely play the Ace Combat and Silent Hill games.
