Ford - Powerboost or Lightning

I'm torn on what to do and have to make a decision quickly.

So I reserved a Lightning (on day 3) and didn't make the cut this year. So I caved, and put in for a 2022 Powerboost (Limited) about 5 months ago (with a Z plan - that is not a guarantee to be available to me next year). Just got notified that it'll be assembled near end of September (after 5 months of zero communication).

My lease was up 8 months ago (2018 Platinum with 44k miles - should end around 8k or more miles under lease); however, I kept extending monthly in waiting to trade in towards next one.

I'm sure I probably should have simply bought out the lease and sold open market (still can); however, with the fee's and hassle of buying then selling ... I was/am naively optimistic that my dealership will get me close enough to close the gap between private and trade-in with all the fee's managed. My dealership told me typically, that open market only makes sense if you can make > 7% of cost to cover all the fee's/tax/etc. when buying out the lease.

KBB is saying I should be somewhere between $42k to $50k for the value of my truck, yet I just tried out Carvana & Vroom and they both offered me $38k --- not great leverage to show the dealership!

I'm stuck in debate, and I have to crap or get of the pot really soon. A few questions/points:
- Do I wait out the Lightning and skip the Powerboost? The cost of gas seems to be coming down relatively quick, hope/assume it will continue to decline, but who knows!
- First gen of Ford's EV seems to be going well ... but 300 miles max, leaves for some anxiety (even though there's a ton of charging stations out there now), and you know their next gen they'll probably have a much longer distance.
- That damn Frunk, man I want that ... grocery shopping with kids/dogs in a truck, pain in the ass.
- No timeline as of now on when the '23 Lightning will even be available.
- Do I buy out my current lease and attempt to sell open market?
- I'm nervous about the payment on a Limited If I don't get a good offer on trade-in, probably overdid it here but got excited having a Z plan for the first time

Thanks for any/all feedback

Oh? Didn't know this. Man I'm glad I made this topic. Definitely helped to make my decision.

gosh darnit. Was supposed to get the truck late Sept, then early Oct, now it's maybe early November ... how are these chip shortages still a thing when so many other technologies are recovering?

And now, the next year models are already being sold. Feels dumb to pick up a 2022 at the very end of the year, yet who knows when a 2023 would even be available.

Also got an email about orders opening soon again for the Lightning, but keep hearing of more complaints and challenges with the first gen.

I wanted to go full electric, but I live in a condo so charging wouldn't be too feasible. Put down my deposit on a new hybrid, should have it early next year. Of course my check engine light just came on, I hope it isn't serious.

Everything uses chips and everyone's got a two year backlog, demand never stopped, as usual it tends to get worse than normal as people start over-ordering to make sure this "never happens again etc". It's gonna take a long bit after these new chip fabs come up to get us straight again, the new plants and workers haven't been broken in yet so probably half their work is crap or deficient. The chips in your car, in your laptops and cellphones, your videogames and TVs, your radios and radio stations, your transmitters and airplanes, tablets, toys, everything. And that isn't even touching on the logistical nightmare of getting those parts out of the country around the world to their destinations, which is ALSO a treat right now. Plus infections continue to break out. Didn't Ringo just test positive again and they ended up canceling the entire tour? That sorta little crap, everywhere. Trust when I say if it looks like things are "recovering" it's not actually "recovered", it's just basically starting to get up to a point where they can at least start to ship stuff. Because of course anything's better than nothing. You still can't actually find a PS5 in a store, right? The reason the used car market went bananas was because everyone firesaled stuff during the pandemic (think Enterprise) and basically output went to near zero up until very, very recently and you can only scrape the bottom of that barrel for so long. It's bouncing back but you're hardly first in line or even a significant blip on the radar.

I took a train to Michigan just about a year ago from Indiana, there's a field that used to be miles of grass and corn that's nothing but cars waiting for chips now, it stretches far and it stretches wide, for miles. That's a good start on what's waiting around! I thought these things sounded awesome but honestly one of those "too good to be true for gen1" situations so I didn't get too excited. That was even assuming the stuff would ship of course

As a fellow Ohioian, there is no way I would get an electric vehicle. Winter alone will kill you with a need to generate heat in the car and lower miles per full charge. Lack of stations and the time to get charged will be a major problem

C'mon... Just got the email that I can order my Lightning for early Spring next year.

Crap! I still don't have a date on the Powerboost, it's 'supposed' to be early November. I'd get a Limited Powerboost for a bit cheaper than a Platinum Lightning.

I want that frunk and not to pay for gas, but I'm super leery about gen 1. Thought this would have fixed itself but my Powerboost is a cool 6months behind schedule because the world sucks.

@rayzor6 - I thought the same until I Google mapped ev charging and was blown away how many spots are in NE OH alone.

You are a braver soul than I. I try to stay on top of my fuel and there has been MANY times that there would be no way for me to try to find a spot, that isn't taken and wait multiple hours to get a charge sufficient to make it home. My territory has a charging station that will charge ONE vehicle. At least you are leasing...I can't imagine trying to buy to own one of these things knowing there is a battery needed that costs multiple thousands of dollars.

Anyway, I'm not trying to poo poo...I hope you get your Powerboost! :)

I officially dropped my Lightning reservation last week. Frunk is cool as hell, but practicality for EV isn't there. Still plenty happy with my PB.

My Jeep GC 4xE should be in any time now. It's a hybrid so if I forget to charge, I got gas. If I use the regenerative braking I can make everything go further. I'm leasing since it's a 1st gen (though they have had 2-3yrs of the same tech on the Wrangler.)

You getting 750 out of a tank?

Supposedly mine will be in next few weeks. My dealership is asking me to still order the Lightning so they can sell it. I'm like, gimme a new bed extendor! We'll see...

Really? Crap, that sucks. I mean I'm at like 17 with my 2018, but I thought the PB wA was supposed to be vastly better? Ugh.

So I have to renew my lease for a 12th month. Just got a new email saying we suck, we have no idea when you'll get your truck, our bad. No compensation, no reasoning, no support. This comes after they removed features from my Powerboost with no communications and no alternative.

This crap is ridiculous. I've tried calling and emailing, no one seems to have any insight on what is going on and I'm met with nothing but excuses.

Recently tried their Twitter support and they are straight out ghosting me after giving me more excuses.

#FirstWorldProblems for sure but Jesus christ they suck. This is my fifth F-150 and at this rate it'll be my last.

Supply chain is very difficult right now, and will be for at least another year.

Oh absolutely, but 8 months, bad communication, features removed... I'm more pissy about the crapty customer service. I've been ignored and ghosted on all fronts and it's disheartening, especially being a pretty loyal fan boy.

Also, GMC has high end trucks on the lot, my brother in law just bailed on Ford for similar reasons.

It’s definitely happening for all car manufacturers and that’s why none of them give a fudge because you aren’t gonna get what you want faster from anywhere else.
I’m still waiting for my Jeep. I keep being told “it should be here next week” and it’s been over a month. I didn’t get the standard panoramic roof because of supply chain issues but the rest should be there.

Yesterday I noticed a build identical to mine was in transit to the lot (just a different color) so I asked if that wasn’t an order for a customer if I could just switch to it. I’m waiting to find out.

Basically with the new baby and because I’m tall, we had to upgrade car seats and now I can’t fit in the drivers seat with either kid behind me because of how small my current vehicle is. So I really need my new one.

We're about to pull the trigger on a Jeep too, for my wife. She said order time is about 4-6 months but appears quite a few are available in NE OH. We haven't solidified what build we're looking for yet. What did you buy @sinnie?

Plenty of "stock" models are flowing in so the lots have things to sell. It's just anything special ordered can take a bit. I ordered a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe with all the options I could add.

I'm excited for it though. It has nightvision, a passenger screen is standard (but can't be seen from the driver seat, looks black.) and lots of other cool features. It can raise and lower itself too.

The 4xEs are awesome! We're looking at a Wrangler, a Rubicon potentially. The $7500 kickback is enticing for the hybrid but the option is like $10k. I didn't realize until recently that they have a full gas tank, really awesome and pisses me off Ford didn't do the same with their trucks.

Also, the blue lettering with the E's is slick!
