Question on Rock Band for modern consoles

Used to play on the Wii.

It's hard to tell what's available now but lately a couple friends and I were talking about how fun it would be to play.

I've got an X1X, PS4 Pro, Wii U...

What's out there as far as a full setup like guitar, base, drums, mic or whatever?

What's the best system for it and are there good 3rd party instruments? What costs are we looking at?

Rock Band 4 is on PS4 and XBox One. Everything about the setups are about the same. on PS4 you can use older guitars if you'd like, on xbone you need an adapter to make that work. google will be helpful for prices, but good condition guitars won't be cheap.

Look into Phase Shift. It's a Rock Band simulator for PC. You can skin it to look exactly like any GH or RB game and can download literally 10,000s of songs for it. Only downside is that it doesn't score vocals.

You can connect the RB drums and guitars though?

They had some insane deals going on Best Buy for a while. Like $40 for the whole bundle

My mistake. I somehow thought you wanted guitar hero.

Honestly check out Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace if you're looking - plastic instruments have actually gone up in value since so many people probably just trashed theirs over time. Rock Band 4 still has weekly DLC as well and a very populated community / scene.

I still have the complete set of Rock Band 2 special edition instruments on PS3, as well as the Guitar Hero PS4 guitar bundle and some other older model guitars. Not sure what any of the compatibility is with the older instruments on PS4 though.

Assuming they're compatible with PS4 which I think they are I'd be willing to buy it off you

I read that only wireless controllers from previous gens are compatible with current gen systems. Not sure about PC compatibility.

If you downloaded any DLC from the X360/PS3 versions then the DLC should work on Xbone/PS4, experts included. There may be some songs that don't work but 99.9% will work. I believe the same limitations that were on last gen are on this gen as far as songs/licenses. The only export you may be able to buy now is Rock Band 3, and you would've had to have played it before sometime in 2015. There was a big thread on the licenses on Harmonix's site, I don't know if it's still there.

PS3 instruments should work natively with syncing with PS4 but Xbone instruments will need a converter that hasn't been in production for years. If you can, get the Rivals version as that has more on-disc content. If not then just make sure the Rivals DLC and the vanilla disc cost less than just the Rivals disc. Speaking of Rivals there's 2 versions of Rock Band 4 hardware. There's the Mad Catz versions and then after that run someone else took over instrument production. I think PDP. I haven't had any issues with the guitar or drums but the mic sucks on the Mad Catz version. If you can use another USB corded microphone, do it.

This thread got me looking into this as I haven't played RB or GH in several years. The cheapest I could find for X1 was piecing together GH:Live (game, guitar, and dongle separately) for around $65.

The pricing on these was very surprising...

Bro you're not kidding.

What started out as just a question turned into an all-out search by me. I was Abel to connect with a couple people on here to piece together a set-up of PS3 two guitars, drums, mic, and the game, but I am going to have to do a little surgery on one guitar and a dongle.

But if you want the actual PS4 box set or whatever in new or mint condition these things are stupidly overpriced. I think next time they release RB5 or whatever on probably the next gen consoles I'll pick up day one to avoid it becoming like this again.

I wouldn't waste your money on Guitar Hero Live. The best part of it was Guitar Hero TV (you play along to the song as its music video was playing at any time of day 24/7, you never knew what song would be on) and that got shut down in 2018. Without that mode, the game went from 500+ songs to just the default 42 on the disc.

Don't get GH Live. The set list sucks, especially when you can't buy any DLC and that guitar won't work with any other game. I don't know if they'll come out with a Rock Band 5 since allegedly the plan is for backward compatibility to be the norm for both consoles, at least to this current gen.

GH Live was actually a solid reinvention of the series when it launched, but with the online aspect shutdown and the guitar incompatibility with any other game it feels like a wasted series reboot in retrospect. I have a PS4 bundle I'd like to clear out but there hasn't been much interest. Still got a DJ Hero 2 party pack from PS3 as well.

Ya I've avoided GH Live like the plague. The guitar doesn't fit with the other games, the dongle doesn't work with other GH guitars.. it's cool for what it is I guess but I've got zero interest in it
