Now that the PlayStation 5 console design and a ton of exclusive games were announced in today's stream. I think it's fitting for the PS5 to have it's own dedicated discussion thread. Will update with PSNs of those with a PS5 when that day arrives.

What'd you guys think of the event?

The new Ratchet looks amazing!
Project Athia looks cool.
3D Platforming Sackboy a big adventure was a cool surprise!
Kena Bridge of Spirits looks like a cool open world game, similar to horizon
Ghostwire is a cool FPS, giving me slight Bioshock vigor vibes
Astro's Playroom looks like another 3D platformer with VR (presumably)
Deathloop a cool bethesda FPS
Village looks like cool first person horror
Horizon 2 now known as Horizon: Forbidden West is finally unveiled and looks beautiful!

No, Xbox and Switch. I skipped PS4 and have said in the past that I would be interested in getting a PS5 after they showed R&C but it won't be until a a price drop and more interesting looking games are available. Since I skipped out on PS4 I would want to use PS5's BC to play the handful of games that still interest me from last gen but if Sony can't get around to communicating how BC works and what games will be available on the program then I likely won't be interested in getting a PS5 until much later than I was originally planning.

God of War, Uncharted (I've never played one, so that trilogy thing), R&C remake, maybe Nioh, Shadow of the Colossus remake, and Last Guardian. There is no way I'm touching this console until it gets a slim model so hopefully Sony figures out BC by then. At launch though Sony seems to really be having a hard time keeping their messaging straight so I don't really know whats going on with them. I just don't think that Jim Ryan is a good fit at his position. Hes been Sony's Don Mattrick this past month.

Ya I suspect people who skipped the entire generation and now want to start playing PS4 games on their PS5 is going to be a very rare group, but in your case I would definitely wait to see and make sure all those games will work.

We know God of War, UC4, The Last Guardian, and R&C are because they are included it the initial PS Plus pack, along with awesome games like Days Gone, Persona 5, and a few others.

If you already were not going to buy it for a few years then it's really a moot point anyways to mention or even worry about it right now.

The concern is that the guy whos in charge of PS5 is the same guy who has a history of not liking BC so I don't think its going to be a very big priority for team and for all we know they decide there is too heavy of a financial investment before long and they just shut the whole thing down to anything other then just the first initial batch. There is also the legitimate concern that their BC implantation will be half baked and we'll hardly see any amount of benefits those games get from being on new hardware.

I think if their BC solution were good then we would be hearing a lot more about it, so I think they've been very quiet about it for a reason.

I mean that's all just conjecture. PS4 BC is obviously a much different animal than PS3 and before, so this is a whole new ballgame and just because someone didn't care for old console BC doesn't mean anything, they said they'd handle most PS4 games so I wouldn't worry, you're not even planning on buying a PS5 for years to come so I am sure it will be resolved by then.

At some point you have to phase out old consoles and transition to new ones, so as long as the first batch makes it I would be OK with them cutting it off at some point, and not being like MS and making games for the lowest common denominator.

Its nice to have access to the games you've bought on a console's ecosystem any time you buy a newer console without worrying about it. Its even nicer to have those games play better on the new hardware you just dropped $500 on.

Ya I mean I actually do agree with you on that point, especially since so many titles were bought digitally this era.

My guess is that the vast majority of PS4 games will work just fine on the PS5 right away. Hideaki Nishino (Senior VP for Platform Planning and Management) provided an update to the March statement, saying, "We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5. We're expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potential higher resolutions. We're currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers...We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move toward launch..."

Ya I'm thinking any major games will be fine.

I'm hoping all my PSVR games work too

My guess is BWC on PS5 will be pretty similar to Xbox at launch. 'Cept for the 360/Xbox BWC of course

Bloodborne needs a PS5 patch at launch tho. I suspect that game's still gonna be hard capped and laggy, since modders have already increased framerates and such through soft patching.

It's part of the PS Plus Collection so I am sure it will be playable day one

It could be similar to XSX in terms of library but I don't think their BC method will be very close in terms of the upgrade quality that we'll see on the Xbox side. FPS possibly but not any of the auto hdr or resolution enhancements.

I think that's my big worry. It's an issue on xbox in the majority of titles too probably but I think a lot of PS4 performance woes like in Bloodborne are baked into the game code and limits imposed for consistency's sake. Like "24fps is cinematic!" AC stuff. 4K Shadow of the Tomb Raider being capped at 30 on xbox comes to mind.

Hopefully they bring BB up to PS5 standards. It deserves it

Well that kind of stuff can't be helped.

Thankfully the big titles already had HDR and pretty good performance on PS4 so most games are going to run really well on the PS5, not sure about Bloodborne but we'll see, but every big PS4 game is going to run and look great, even if it won't auto-add some fake AI HDR into much older games, which I am not sure how much that actually does.

Uncharted, TLoU 1&2, R&C etc, are going to be pretty awesome and I am excited actually because I never did beat R&C so I can play that right before Rift in time.

From what I've seen, any game which had a locked frame rate or any kind of frame cap by the dev will not see frame rate increases higher than the dev allowed unless they convince the dev to go in and change their code. Some issues which have been ran into are instances where things like the crowd or other things in the environment ran at higher frame rates than the character did so trying to force a game to double the FPS resulted in those environment assets moving at a 2x animation speed than intended which resulted in random things looking like it was moving in fast forward. BC is can be a far more complex thing unless they're only goal is to stabilize uneven frame rates.

I'm not really worried about all that, the good games and exclusives played really well on my Pro with occasional dips that won't be there on the PS5.

I didn't nitpick every game that was slightly better on the PS4 which overpowered the Xbox One and I don't intend to start now.

I'm sure these games are going to play awesome and I can't wait for the console release

I mean I'm not gonna cry over not being able to play obscure PS4 games on PS5, or even some B level titles like say Spongebob or Destroy All Humans or older games like Thief or even bigger titles like Fallout 4 or anything from Bethesda now that Microsoft is probably putting them on lock 🔐 and key 🔑. If I ever wanna play those 3rd party Or obscure oddball games again, I'll just go to daddy X where the nostalgia fields are ripe with all kinds of goodies.

Yeah, I think the PS5's BC will be serviceable for the most part, I don't think that they're trying to compete head to head with Ms on that front.

Ya they don't really need to focus on little things like that of little consequence. Personally I want them to keep attention on want win them the console war of this generation which is making better games.

MS can do BC all the way back to 360 and Xbox and an affordable weaker version console and subscription service, which they're successful at, but I'd want Sony to keep focus on making much better exclusives and a great VR experience.
