Well, it's a new year so shall we get into completing some games 'round here? As always, the goal of this challenge is to beat games on as many systems as possible in one calendar year. Nothing new there.

What is new however, is that in addition to monitoring the completion of specific systems, I'm going to keep up with the total number of individual games that everyone finishes. As you can see, everyone involved has their very own box which will serve to keep up both their systems and total games beaten. I've put mine in the format that I intend to use, but if everyone could just provide me with a list of their systems I can do the legwork of putting it together on this thread. Hopefully this will make it easier for everyone to keep up with their completions, as I realize not everyone is as anal as I am in monitoring their lists.

I'd like to give a shout-out to Razeak for coming up with the idea for this competition and I'm honored to carry the torch that he started. Well, that's about all I've got to say here, so let the gaming begin!

Girly: beat a game that is predominantly targeted towards a feminine audience #metoo
Mega Manly: beat a game in the Mega Man universe
JRPG: beat a JRPG
Hyrulian Hero: beat a Zelda game
Raccoon City: beat a Resident Evil game
2nd Amendment: beat an FPS
Race Drivin': beat a racing game
"Destroy the Core!": beat a SHMUP
Super Sonic: beat a game in the Sonic universe
Super Mayrio: beat a game in the Mario universe
Hoppin' & Boppin': beat a side scrolling, 2D platformer (non-Metroidvania)
Pile Drivin': beat a belt-scrolling brawler/beat 'em up
Street Fightin': beat a 1-on-1 fighter
Bomber Manly: beat a game in the Bomberman franchise
egg: beat a puzzler
Pocket Monster: beat a game in the Pokémon franchise
Billy Mitchell: beat a retro arcade/pinball game
Bear & Bird: beat a 3D platformer and/or collect-a-thon
Sigh "Metroidvania": beat an open ended 2D platformer that plays similarly to games from the Metroid franchise and/or post-SotN Castlevanias
Ninja Gayden: beat a 3D hack-and-slash
Vault Boy: beat an open world game and/or a Western RPG
Grown-Ass Man: complete a game from the following series: Castlevania (pre-SotN), anything From Software, and Contra (and any other Konami 2D shooter, for that matter). The first individual game that I included was Cuphead. If you feel like you beat a balls hard game and are deserving of this icon, post on here and the community will deem whether you earn it or not.

Lastly, despite the fact that several games fit multiple categories, a particular completion only counts towards one icon. For example: Super Mario World would count towards the Super Mayrio icon, but not the Hoppin' & Boppin' one. I understand this could get a little confusing, but that's how it's gonna be! #littlebill

A Short Hike and Carpe Diem on PC / Windows

I'm getting close on Super Mario Galaxy 2, should be done with it sometime this coming week. I'd also like to bust out a Game Boy title sometime soon but we'll see.

Me and my son decided to knock out another Turtles game. I had tried this remake once a while back but couldn't get into it. This time, I enjoyed it overall. I like some of the changes, like how your special attack doesn't use up some of your health. Also, the regular enemies throughout the levels seemed much harder than the original, which was a welcome change because they were way too easy in the original. Another great change was being able to attack up/down and diagonally, instead of just left and right. However, I didn't like that they removed the Technodrome level (and subsequently, the cool Shredder fight where you have to throw the foot clan soldiers at the screen). Also, Bebop and Rocksteady were removed altogether on the ship level and replaced with the mid-way bosses from the Technodrome level, and the boss from the prehistoric level, Slash, one of the coolest/hardest boss fights in the original, was removed and replaced with something entirely new. They also removed the Rat King boss fight at the end of the third level for some reason. Of the remaining boss fights, most of them had their attack patterns changed entirely, and were much easier. The music was somehow worse than the original, and I didn't really care for the graphical change. Also, continues were handled weird in this one. If you run out of lives, you're dead until the start of the next level, then your continue kicks in. Sometimes you may finish a level with just 0 or 1 lives remaining, then lose them early on in the next level and have to wait around until the next level starts. Still, the increased difficulty, change to the special attack, and new attack directions were enough to make it worth playing in my book, I just can't help but notice every change I didn't like when I love the original so much.

47 down, just beat Super Metroid on my Super Nintendo classic.

Beat for the Retro GotM thread and enjoyed it, but already want to play it again. I had never played so I followed along with a walkthrough YT video mainly seeking to avoid missing things, but also for general direction and hints on how to do things. I eventually got used to using my scanner and trying to find things myself. I never got great with the buttons - frequently misusing the L/R buttons for fire angled up/down and I remapped shoot to X, jump to A and sprint to B, leaving Y as change weapons and I frequently hit them wrong, though I wasn't a fan of the default button config either. Next time I absolutely wouldn't use a walkthrough and might even draw/print a map so I can mark places to return to. I'd also want to play on a better display with better sound. I was on a 27" PC monitor with built-in speakers and it just wasn't atmospheric at all.

For Frank's Game of the Month thread, I finished Batman: Arkham City yesterday for the PlayStation 3.

I'm the kind of Batman fan that most real Batman fans hate. I grew up watching reruns of the Adam West series and eventually graduated to The Animated Series when that took over the after school TV market. I had a paralyzing fear of the Joker that lasted quite a while and kept me from seeing the original Tim Burton movie until I was in my 20s. (To be clear, I didn't have Jokerphobia that long, but that's how long it took me to get around to seeing the movie.) I could watch Christopher Nolan's trilogy over and over again. Despite all that, I never took to the comics that much - that's true of all comics, really - though I'm still game for any sort of alternative Batman media.

My experience with Arkham City is probably a victim of its own hype. I played Arkham Asylum for an hour (back when PlayStation Plus was making a big deal about its free one-hour trials) and really liked what I saw, once you get over the fact that everybody looks like they're made of clay. I enjoyed the darker versions of some of my favorite characters, I really appreciated the pedigree of the voice actors, and I liked the idea of Batman trying to fight his way out of the iconic facility. And then the demo ended before things barely got going. Time passed, Arkham Asylum was celebrated to heaven and back, and Arkham City received even more glowing praise. I was really looking forward to diving into a slick, dark open world game with the Dark Knight at the center.

My experience was mixed. With my approach to the game, the combat plays like a cake made of The Last of Us with a whole bunch of hand-to-hand frosting on top. The bulk of the encounters put you in a large room full of cover where charging in Batarangs blazing will get you killed. You have to identify isolated, vulnerable mooks, kill them quickly, and then disappear before his friends realize what's going on. There are also some more action-oriented sequences where Batman bounces around a pile of enemies like a pinball, and it's my job as an old fart to remember which button combination acts as a counter for each kind of attack. And then there are the boss fights, which are positively ridiculous and play like something out of a Zelda game.

That said, the game did get better as time went on. I still continued to be frustrated by the bottomless bag of gadgets, each of which had a story-related use required to progress through the game, but I developed a nice rhythm with my Bouncing Stealth Batman routine, and I got better at dealing with crowds of varied grunts. I never got over the plot's ridiculousness, though, and the game was way too sparse to feel like an open world game, even with a million Riddler trophies scattered around. Oh, and the random Catwoman non-sequiturs? Not cool, Rocksteady.

With two worlds left in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, that's likely the next game I'm going to finish and the next platform I'm going to complete. I've made a surprising amount of progress in Serious Sam as well, so Stadia isn't too far behind. I'll need to detour at the start of October to play Resident Evil VII for Frank's thread,

Beat Tomba! on PlayStation earlier today. Fun, albeit flawed platformer with light RPG elements. Loved the graphics and the rather comedic dialogue. The controls work well enough once you get used to Tomba's floaty jump mechanics. Most of the quests were fairly self explanatory, but others bordered on the inconceivable with their limited descriptions. The boss fights against the evil pigs were a low point, as every single one of them were identical, including the final encounter. My personal score would be about a 7.5, but those with limited patience would probably rate it a 6.

I beat Alwa's Awakening and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon on Switch. I really liked Alwa, which is a really good retro-style Metroidvania. Already bought the sequel, which came out on Switch yesterday.

Edit because I actually typed Castlevania instead of Bloodstained lol.

To check Wii off my list, I finished New Super Mario Bros. Wii today. It wasn't my first time beating the game, but it's the first time I played through the game continuously from start to finish.

I don't think anyone was more excited about New Super Mario Bros. when it was announced for the DS back in 2006. These days, we're drowning in reboots and reimaginings of classic games or franchises, but back then, rebooting a 2D Mario title in the era of Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy was not an obvious strategy. I picked the game up on Day 1, shortly after completing my year of teaching in France, and plowed through the game joyfully at home, hunched over my computer desk. It tickled the nostalgia bug while adding enough of the quality of life improvements from the later games to seem fresh.

I remember somebody saying that the original New Super Mario Bros. ruined them. They went back to the original 2D titles and kept failing miserably when Mario wouldn't do the wall jumps and spins that the new release had injected into their muscle memory.

I was just as excited about the Wii release when it came out in its red, OCD-triggering case. I remember being annoyed that the game's marketing so heavily leaned on Yoshi's inclusion, but he's present in literally only four levels in the entire game. Regardless, it was the same winning formula on the DS with more levels, more secrets, and nicer graphics. The final level's Bowser encounter is probably my favorite in the entire Mario franchise. It all would have been perfect if Nintendo didn't shoehorn motion controls into the game. Having a couple of special platforms mimic your Wiimote's tilt? Fine. Making you shake the Wiimote to make Mario spin or pick something up? Infuriating.

I've played through each of the New Super Mario Bros. games that have been released since, including New Super Luigi U, but I never really sat down and played all the way through the Wii release. My original save file cut off in World 6 somewhere, and I helped my little sister complete her own save in co-op mode, including the final world and final boss, but I don't have a playthrough to call my own. After a number of false starts, I started over this month and played through the game, loving every second of it... except for those damn moments where I had to shake the Wiimote like an idiot.

This game really needs a re-release as an add-on pack or something. There are some great levels in it.

Two platforms left! Serious Sam is getting seriously exhausting, so it's probably good that I'll be playing through Resident Evil VII and (what appears to be) Yoshi's Island for Frank's thread and the Retro Talkshop Thread next.
