I had some complaints about people making a sales topic, then deleting it and recreating it. I think it's a form of "stealth bumping" but kind of annoying as a reader of the forum. I think in most cases these were topics with replies disabled as well.

There was at least 3 people doing it and I wasn't getting a ton of honesty from them about it. Also, they were quick to point fingers at others. So, it seemed like it would be hard to police it.

So, I decided to try disabling the delete post feature in marketplace forums.

I could imagine this causing trouble too. So, let me know if that's the case.

I was really hoping you'd disabled replies and had deleted posts to bump

I have noticed people will reply to a post and then delete the post. This way it not only brings the post to the top, but by deleting the replies, it doesn't look like they have been constantly bumping a post for a month and have had no interest. Can we also disable the deleting of replies?

This change disables post deletions (when I say 'post' I mean replies too, same thing). So I think it will also cover the case you just mentioned.

I use the ignore feature religiously to weed out topics I don't need or want to follow.

Topic about Xbox games for sale? I don't have an Xbox, so ignored.
Topic about an Assassin's Creed game? I lost any interest in that series years ago. So ignored.
Topic about comparing e-peen? Ignored.

No matter how many replies they get, they never get bumped to the top of my screen.

It's my favorite feature of the GameTZ forums.

Is this from users that are trying to reach top spot but really don't need to even bump their threads since there's not enough volume being posted?

That's exactly what it's from.

That's fine with me. It will create a lot more clutter though. Now I won't be able to update posts and will have to create a new post every time I add a new item, but most of us do that a lot anyway, so it's not too crazy.

You should disable post-deletion in non-marketplace forums too. That could get really fun. Lol.

People may have already ignored the post because you didn't post any items they wanted.

Maybe I post an XB1S (which you have no interest in). You ignore the topic. Then I edit it and include a Nintendo Switch (which you've been looking to buy). Now I missed out on a potential buyer.

By "update" I meant delete and post again. I just realized that was to implicit the first time. I should have said delete and create a new post, so I will have to create an additional post every time.

Honestly that is a better way of doing it anyway when you're listing one item at a time. For larger lists, just note "more to come" and if people ignore then that's on them.

To be fair, that's a fairly rare example. The forums had a lot of people just doing the delete-and-repost to bump it without any real change or anything. You wanting to add an item to an existing listing is a fairly uncommon edge case, I think. I think the trade-off is worth it. yes

I've been guilty of deleting bump posts, but it was more or less trying to clean up the thread, not at all to "stealth bump". Just figured a thread with a lot less "bump" posts looked cleaner on the site. My Tetris topic is what immediately comes to mind.

That said I guess there's just going to be more useless bump posts. Not much else I can do at this point. Especially if deleting these bump posts was really bothering that many people.

I have done that a lot as well.

Anyway from what I can tell, those posts being deleted wasn't a big issue. It's when people would delete and remake their entire thread as a way to bump it. That bypasses if the thread was previously ignored.

I think the main issue was that people were bumping posts that shouldn't have been bumped yet. We used to have an "unwritten" (?) rule of waiting at least 24 hours for a bump, for example. Or, needing the price or something to change.

If you've posted something a week ago and it has fallen off the main page, then I think a bump might still make sense and be fine.

What we're trying to prevent is people that were fairly clearly bumping their stuff to the "top" when it wasn't that old to bring with. That was the real problem that I think we're trying to solve here.

I want to say yes, but only because I was one of the folks who pm'd you about the deleting/reposting issue and the particular user I reported hasn't done it since.

The only problem I can see with this, is that sometimes I create Marketplace topics for games I have crosslisted on eBay or Reddit. If it sells on another site, it's nice to be able to just nuke the GameTZ topics I made about the item. With this change, I'd end up having to leave a useless artifact of the topic (i.e. a topic that is edited to just say "Sold")

I also sometimes have a change of heart about selling something, which again, makes it nice to be able to delete topics.

As a final note, I have never had a problem with "stealth bumpers", since the Old Layout makes it easy to mass ignore topics I am not interested in.

Thanks as always bill and I respect whatever decision you make.

Maybe a solution to this could be messaging a moderator to delete the thread for you? If you're the only one who has posted in it, I don't see an issue there. Others may disagree though.
