The future of GTZ for 2020 and beyond?

I fully understand that this has been discussed in previous years. But that was a while ago.

But almost entering 2020 now, where do we stand on GTZ's future? We are such a great community and I would like to see GTZ do well. But the current amount of active has been slowly dropping. And it's quite saddening to me. I'm sure we all feel the same way.

Any response from @Bill would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes, there's some noticeable decline in activity. But there is also a solid group of regulars who want to keep it going. I suspect the decline may level off over time. Perhaps we're evolving.

Financially, the site is fine. People using the amazon link, subscriptions, and ads more than cover the costs. If this gets to be a problem in the future, I'll let people know.

I'm not motivated to invest a lot of time/money into the site, but I'm happy to maintain it indefinitely. Selling the site to someone else doesn't make sense (too much of it is in my head, the technology it's built on is too old, it's priceless to me, etc.). Selling the data or migrating it to another site is quite tricky and not something I'd do without the consent of each user for their data. So, I think the best course is to just ride it out.

There are potential long-term risks that are hard to predict. I could just die or something. Also, the technology the site is build with is old and there could be trouble keeping it working or security issues with it. So, no guarantees, but I have done all I can to set it up to work automatically and securely.

I don't think anyone knows for sure what is causing the decline. My best guess is the shift to digital downloading of games.

It's because this site's trading process is dated and counter intuitive. We have listings but the forums are generally used instead. And even then there are way too many forum sections, with classifieds being favored disproportionately over all the rest. Doesn't help that there are no concrete rules as to what goes where.

And yeah okay, over time digital downloads have become more of a thing. But so has a shift in consumer culture. This is the internet. People expect to be able to hit the buy button if they see something they like. As opposed to struggling to get someone to trade or sell you something even though they were the one to advertise the fact that they have it.

Not to mention the lack of photos.

Imo there probably ought to be some form of commitment required to having a game on your available list. Such as being required to sell someone that game if they agree to a certain amount.

Trading in forums is hard to beat. No matter what cool new thing someone comes up with for trading, they will always have to compete with the simplicity, freedom and low effort/cost of people using a forum instead.

Agree. I have done sales and purchases on sites where the market section is an afterthought. Nice to avoid fees...

Advertising can be super easy. All of us could do it too.

One of us buys a domain such as nofeemarketplace.com and points it to a page on here. Maybe Bill creates a page here at gametz.com/nofees and places a landing page there. Something simple about listing your items and paying no fees as an alternative to eBay/Mercari. Then anyone going to that domain is forwarded to that info. They can choose to continue and create an account if they wish.

Then anyone who wants to advertise can in any way they like. Want to get the word out? Buy some ad space in your local paper, post it on Facebook, whatever. All you need is that domain and a tag line.

Advertising a site like this on IG is actually pretty complex and very well might not be worth it.

I'm not trying to downplay your ideas -- but you should know that pretty much everything you've mentioned has ALREADY been mentioned and attempted to be implemented over the past several years.

I go into GameStops and put "Fudge GameStop, visit GameTZ.com" business cards in the boxes. Not really, but I could.

You're talking about a significant investment in time and money. It just doesn't make sense given the shrinking market and past experiences we've had.

I'm sure there's been maintenance over the years, but it should be rebuilt with a more modern technology stack so it can compete with the latest.
It had a complete overhaul a while back. The code is custom. I don't see how changing the backend stack would make a difference. What doesn't it do that you want it to do -- that a different tech stack would change exactly?

Instagram is outpacing Facebook in growth and will likely overtake it at some point.
Yes, of course. And IG is an image-based site that relies on that for continued growth. It is great at some things -- but not so great at leading people to sites like this.

You have to follow the flock wherever they're headed. An ad campaign on IG would do wonders, and a page linking to hot deals on the site among other things could be a great way to attract users.
Go for it then! Put one up! Advertise GameTZ. Let us know how that goes.

Sorry, but most of your ideas have already been discussed for years -- and some even implemented. We've had people before that thought that they knew exactly what GTZ needed. It tends to be a lot more complex than a person like that thinks...

I think there's lots of potential despite its track record of dwindling activity throughout the years. We just need to change things up, abandon the geocities vibe and make sure everyone who knows GameSpot and Metacritic exist, also know about GameTZ.
Um, yeah. Ok.
