What's the exact reason that some movies are considered part of the MCU and some (older Hulk, older but still pretty recent Spiderman) arent? Is it just a release year thing + some being rebooted?

The studios that own them basically. Fox up until recently owned FF and X-Men. Sony owned Spider-Man. Disney owns Avengers and MCU stuff. The old Hulk, the old FF and Spider Man movies and crap aren't the same movie company.

Those studios couldn't get along and because of contracts and licenses, they couldn't be used for the MCU.

Disney stuck a deal with Sony to get Spider-Man into the MCU, and Disney just bought Fox's film division, and now they own FF and X-Men.

TIH, IM, and IM2 are all Paramount but are still considered MCU.

Here's the MCU list:

https://en.wikipedia...

There are also TV shows considered part of the MCU line, but most of them do not do more than drop a few references to events of the films. Still, if you like the characters involved, these are considered the MCU versions of these heroes.

https://en.wikipedia...

The next round of TV shows will be on Disney's Disney+ streaming service, and seem like they will interact more with the movies and their characters. This is partly due to them being produced by Marvel Studios, and not farmed out to Marvel's TV division, which is run by different people.

Anything else (X-Men, Wolverine, Deadpool, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies, Ang Lee's Hulk, Fantastic Four, Nic Cage as Ghost Rider, Ben Affleck as Daredevil, Blade trilogy) were all done by other studios. Marvel consulted, but did not have creative control, and none of those movies tie into the MCU storylines.

Marvel just got control of Fantastic Four and X-Men back in the Fox deal, so they will likely be relaunched as part of the MCU. Marvel also has control of Blade again, and got Ghost Rider back a while ago (and used him on the Agents of SHIELD TV show).

Since they have Fox now imo Marvel should work toward building up toward Galactus as the next "huge" baddie in the MCU, bring in the F4, lead into Silver Surfer, and then reveal Galactus behind it all, that is what I want to see. At least give us a good Silver Surfer movie, he's such a cool character.

I discovered Dead Like Me on Amazon Prime... looks like it's from 2003/Showtime and I'm enjoying it. Only lasted 2 seasons though so I don't know. Patiently waiting for OITNB final season to come out this week (mainly to finish it, it has sucked the last several seasons.)
Dead Like Me is a great show, it's from Bryan Fuller (who did Wonderfalls, Pushing Daises, Hannibal, and most recently the first season of American Gods). His shows are almost always great and have a certain visual flair, but he has the WORST luck and they always get cancelled before they finish.

They made a movie for Dead Like Me after the show ended, but it wasn't as good as the show.

@Stiler 110% agreed. Galactus is my pick for next "big bad". Anything would beat the version of him from Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (even if I tend to enjoy that movie as a guilty pleasure).

The shows are hit or miss, the movies are mostly hit. Some lesser than others. Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3 & Dark World are probably my least favorite (if I'm remembering the ranking thread correctly). But even those can drag a rewatch out of me from time to time. Edward Norton's Incredible Hulk is good but can be skipped, especially if you're at all familiar with the character, as they reestablish everything you absolutely need to know about the Hulk in The Avengers. Think a whopping one character from that movie has cameoed in the series since other than Banner/Hulk himself.

no no, that is "Jack Nicholson Wanna-Be Face". He did it all throughout the 80's and early 90's.

I love me some 80's/90's Christian.

In fact, I was obsessed with him in high school.

Love that episode. I honestly feel like post-Michael Scott Office is a little underrated. The Robert California season is a lot underrated. Love that guy.

Aside from Agents of Shield none of the tv shows are part of the MCU.

Netflix wise, Daredevil and the Punisher are decent, the rest are "eh" and Iron fist is down right awful.

Fox wise, Legion is amazing IF you can stand "weird/trippy" stories and visuals, it's just so off the wall. It's from the guy who made the Fargo tv show.

Oh i thought a lot of those shows were part of MCU based on posts here and some sites I checked, but maybe not so relevant?
I really liked Jessica Jones S1 (mostly bc of Killgrave) but stopped after a few eps of s2
Luke Cage was pretty cool but didnt finish it
Defenders was OK, couldnt care too much
I think that was about it

@Stiler & @DrizzDrizzDrizz

Agents of Shield, Agent Carter, Cloak and Dagger, Inhumans and the Netflix shows are indeed set in the MCU. The only time the movies have ever actually acknowledged them though was in Avengers: Endgame when Jarvis from Agent Carter makes a cameo. Otherwise you can follow the movies without needing to see the TV shows, but you can treat the TV shows as "supplementary" material to the movies. Lots of events from the movies are referenced throughout those shows.

Shows that will actually be acknowledged in the films are part of the MCU Phase 4 and will be premiering on Disney+ over the next few years. WandaVision, Loki, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, & Hawkeye.

A Scanner Darkly (2006) - 10/10 - I watched it again last night (it's on Prime). I think it was my 3rd time, maybe 4th. It is a witch's brew of great elements (quirky yet believable characters, acting is top notch, strong themes [the highs/lows of drug use, paranoia, privacy/control, classic PKD reality questioning], rotoscoping, underplayed sci-fi elements). It's funny then deeply tragic. The only film to have truly understood Philip K. Dick's writing (as opposed to turning it into yet another action movie... even my beloved Blade Runner fails here). It has an amusing Alex Jones cameo that only gets more ironic with time. One of Linklater's best, though Waking Life is hard to beat.

I've been very interested in checking A Scanner Darkly out. Never seen it praised to that extent, which has reignited my interest haha. Maybe I'll give that a go tonight or this weekend.

Whoa.

I don't recall if I've actually seen this one or not but I have a lot of the same complaints with translations from PKD to the screen so I really should watch this.
