For those that do reselling as a side hustle or for a living that is nice (make extra money/ let the hobby pay for itself)

But for me I'm just happy to make my money back that I spent (if I make a little that's fine too)

I usually just like to trade but in saying that I have given good deals and in return gotten good deals too.

I just like to be fair with people when reselling or trading.

Kindness goes along way in how you treat people😊

What are your thoughts on reselling for profit vs reselling to recoup your cost?

I have 2 PS5 preordered and ordered 3 Mario Kart Live to flip on eBay. Don't judge unless you're trying to pay my medical bills.

Are you running a poll or something? I don't get the purpose of this post.

From what I've observed, people buy and sell items for multiple reasons, most of which you covered in your own post.

Personally, I resell items that I find I'm no longer using to free up space and to fund my hobbies. I typically sell everything locally since I'm patient and can find buyers to pick things up. My prices are typically cheaper than eBay since I don't have to factor in fees and shipping costs.

If you're asking about trading vs reselling, that's a bit different. I don't play a ton of games and most of the games I do play have been out for 6 months or more before I start them. In recent years, trades have become few and far between, so I tend to sell things before they get devalued more than what they are.

Just trying to see ones thoughts on reselling. Is it a job to them? Do they do it as a side hustle? Do they do it to try to pay a bargain forward?

No judgement here. You do you.

Few people, if any, are going to sell a valuable item cheap just because they don't have much invested in it. If you bought a copy of a game new for $25 and found out a year later that it was selling on eBay for $100 or your local game shop was offering $75 in trade credit for copies, what cash price would you sell it for? You would be doubling you money if someone offered you $50. You might take $50 from a friend, but would you take $50 from a stranger knowing it was worth much more?

Cheap items I don't have much invested in, I'll sell or trade for what I have in them to put them in the hands of someone who wants them more than I do. I give stuff away. However, if I buy more valuable items cheaply specifically to resell, I need to make a reasonable profit to cover my time and costs.

I don't typically buy a lot with the intent of resale, but I have done it in the past, mainly to try to help someone who missed out on something get a better price. But I won't sell so cheap that it's an easy flip unless I REALLY want to get rid of something.

And yes, I have cut friends some really good deals. About 7 years ago, one of my friends was looking for a copy of Persona 2 on PS1. For some reason, I had 2 complete copies, and I sold her my extra at my cost- the $40 on the GS price tag. At the time, I could have easily gone online and gotten $70-80 for it.

Yeah, depends who it is. I have one friend where we both just kinda give each other stuff and I know I don't keep track of values. I seriously doubt he does either.

I've got a couple like that also. One of my childhood friends, when I told him I was going for a complete N64 set, let me see what he still had, and gave me one I still needed- Starcraft 64.

I don't buy new, high-demand video games off retail shelves for a quick flip. Rather, I do almost the exact opposite and get old, heavily-discounted video games from second-hand shops and wait for their price to rise over time. As it turns out, my own personal tastes in video games is an excellent indicator of what will become popular down the road. wink

For example, back in the day when GameStop priced Ninja Five-O (Game Boy Advance) for five bucks apiece, I called every location in my city and ended up getting four of them. Years later, when GameStop priced Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ (Nintendo DS) for five bucks apiece, I did the exact same thing and picked up four of them, too. As it just so happens, my focus now is on the Microsoft Xbox 360 library. Mark my words: there are some really cool, really fun, and really niche titles that GameStop's selling right now for -- you guessed it -- five bucks apiece. smile

So, have at it! Buy 'em cheap! Enjoy 'em now! Then, sell 'em for big bucks down the road!! grin

I'm half convinced that the value of Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ shot up simply because of the bizarre and hilarious title name. The name is just too good. It should be illegal. It's even better than Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, and that was a strange one.

Edit - Realized that the title is actually Freshly Picked: Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland.

I gotta say, that title is perhaps just as bizarre as Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ

That Tingle game, though, been on my to play list forever.

Most of the profit I make in collecting comes from buying games that are under priced from pawn shops and thrift stores. It always feels like if I don't buy it the next guy will, so I don't feel too bad. On the resell side, most people buying online know how to do a google search. If you price your games above market, they simply aren't going to sell. I generally price my games at low end eBay or Amazon. It's a fair price, but I'm still making a profit, so I guess that puts me into the "for profit" category.

I buy a ton from Goodwill. I usually buy things at the same time to resell with the idea that it pays for whatever I just bought. Beyond that it's just a bonus.

Selling some games for a profit does help me feel a bit less guilty about spending money on games. My life is busy enough now that I don't really bother with anything under a $20 profit.

My wife goes to the Wednesday sales when Seniors get 30% off and the Sunday sales where all the clothing with the color for the week is only $0.99. She buys to resell at a flea market booth. It is surprising how much clothing is new with the original store tags. I go with her every so often and look for other stuff that might be profitable. A couple of months ago I found the Shadowrun Boardgame for $3.00. When I got it home, it was clear it hadn't been used and there were two additional Shadowrun books in the box. I put each item for sale separately on eBay and they sold for a total of about $50.

Last year, they put out a bundle of three fishing rods and reels for $12. I recognized one of the reels as a vintage Abu Garcia Ambassaduer. I sold it on eBay for about $75. Earlier this year, someone on Facebook Marketplace in my town offered three reels for $10 each. One of them was a Vintage Ambassaduer. I considered getting it to flip, but decided to just tell the seller what they had. They repriced it at $50 and the ad disappeared a day or two later.

I buy things locally to resell whenever I see a chance for it. Example: a guy was selling a ps4 slim for $150 on Facebook. I messaged him to let him know it was selling for $200 or more at the time. He said he just needed money fast and I offered him $125. I was honest and said I would resell it. I told him "if you wait a couple days it'll sell."

He accepted the deal and said its fine. I picked it up, tested at home for like 8 hours while working online, then sold for $225 that afternoon. I used the profit to pay off my ps5 preorder.

In short, I resell to fund my gaming hobby. We don't have much disposable income at the moment and it's a deal we made as a couple five or so years ago. The deal is that we spend none of our earnings from teaching, doordash, and shipt on frivolous things. This includes games, electronics, and clothes.

This! Hobby is way to expensive to not save a few bucks here and there.

I got bills. If I can make easy money by opening a box thats shipped to me and reshipping it out - I'll do it all day for easy money.

That's exactly why I'm sitting on 5 Gotta Go Flamingos rn
