Welcome to the repurposed GOT Discussion thread! SPOILER WARNING: Spoiler tags ARE NOT necessary in this thread. Discuss freely, but be sure to AVOID THIS THREAD if you are not completely caught up. Valar morghulis!

Talk all things GOT before the final season in 2019!
DAYS UNTIL GOT: TONIGHT, FINALLY!

If this fizzles out before the premiere, I'll reopen it, but I plan to be posting sporadic theories/random thoughts as they come to me in here, so , like last year, I'd totally be into discussing them and seeing what others feel about the show. Theories, general thoughts, criticisms, post them all here.

(And cherish it, because we only have 6 episodes worth of new discussion this season. Gonna be a sad day when all the pointless theorizing ends.)

Yah, I think GRRM is unfortunately to blame there. The creators say they always had the final episode-count in mind but I just can't help but feel they could have made better decisions if the two missing books had been released. It's not so much poor writing as it is exremely gifted writers working with a skeleton of a story after they spent 4 solid seasons building a story from a plethora of source material. So now they need to scramble to connect the dots, and since they don't have the completely-detailed map to work off anymore, there are going to be some missteps. It's no longer a group of folks adapting a single vision, it's a group of folks now trying to wrap that single vision up by collaborating, obviously, with several separate visions haha

Let's just hope with the 6 episodes that are left, they figure out how to at least stick the landing. And I say at least, but even the worst season of GOT is better than most TV right now so I can't complain whatsoever haha

I have hopes it'll be great. But you look at all major fan favorite shows finales and they are always kind of crapty (ie, Dexter, Lost, True Blood all come to mind.) I hope it's decent enough that as I said before, that people can cherish each collection for what they are. I hope the ending isn't so bad that it destroys prospective buyers from reading the books because they might not realize they're different from the show.

I know the next book has been done for quite some time, but editing or marketing has held it up or something. I'm not sure if GRRM is finished with the final book or not. I am starting to have doubts we'll ever see the final book. Dude is unhealthy and taking on too many other projects (such as the prequels.)

I personally love LOST's finale (favorite show haha). I think most folks gave up on that show with the final season in general, and then when not every answer was spoon-fed in the finale, those who were on the fence but stuck around were then disappointed. Honestly, and they all probably weren't what the writers had in mind, but just about everything in that show can be explained somehow using just information presented in the show. So the mysteries WERE answered gosh darnit, people were just expected to rewatch in order to get it all. Not the most well-designed option but it's there!

Haha sorry, I see LOST mentioned and go off in my own zone. Dexter's finale truly was a miserable nightmare though. That show got steadily worse after Season 4 but that last episode was the epitome of disappointment.

BUT Six Feet Under apparently had one of the best finales ever (that I have still yet to see but need to), so maybe HBO can sprinkle a little more success dust on GOT for the finale.

I still need to see Six Feet Under. I think I tried to watch it years ago but couldn't get into it, but I think I'd like it now.

Yes, I guess Lost wasn't so bad. It just wasn't what people wanted. Dexter though, ugh. I'm re-watching the series and am in the middle of Season 5. Maybe I'll do Lost next, it's been about 10yrs.

Six Feet Under is absolutely great but you really need to be in the mindset for it. It takes a toll on the mental stability for sure haha. Every episode starts with someone dying, and then the characters (a family who runs a funeral home) spend the episode dealing with the funeral arrangements on top of their own personal issues. It's great show, awesome drama, awesome acting (a great cast) and there is some real comedic/heartfelt moments in there... but boy all the death can get a bit taxing.

Definitely give LOST another go and be sure to let me know when you do! Love LOST discussions haha

Lost has always been my favorite show of all-time, though Game of Thrones has eclipsed it. I really liked the finale and don't understand all the hate. A lot of the mysteries were answered, and honestly the characters and what happened to them were always the best part of the show to me.

Six Feet Under is definitely not for everyone, but that show is outstanding, and yeah, possibly the best series finale ever. One day I'll have to go back and watch it all again.

GRRM said it will be bitter sweet. Now maybe he was talking about the book. How different do the showrunners want the ending to be from GRRM's vision? They already have diverged quite a bit. So I am wondering if that quote was for the show or the book, or both?

I think it was specifically for the book, but that folks are expecting the endings will at least be similar.

I don't think they'll be completely different. In fact, I imagine it'll still be pretty close. It's just that all the events leading up to it are the things that need to change up considering the ripple effect of all the changes they've already made.

So I guess just don't hold your breath about Young Griff, book readers haha

I'm rewatching Lost right now, coincidentally. Almost finished season 3. The show looked better the first time I watched it but still holds up for me. Once I reach the finale I'll be able to judge it under a new light.

Need to watch it again after work but my main takeaways:
-damn Jamie Lannister is a badass
-damn Jamie Lannister is going to die so hard
-damn Winterfell is on fire
-damn that last shot of the trailer of the battle lines being drawn has me hyped.

My hope is that Jamie escapes maybe hurt horribly but lives. Dude isn't a bad guy at all.

I'd say he is still kind of a bad guy. Pushing Bran, hate-fudging his sister under their son's dead body, threatening to kill babies to make sure he can be with Cersei, etc etc. But he's definitely on a redemptive arc for sure. That, however, is exactly why I feel like he's going to have to die. After so long being such a bad dude, he should make the ultimate sacrifice for "the living".

Yeah... he's got his flaws. Most of his bad guy crap comes from Cersei. Take her out of the picture and he'll be fine.

Yah Cersei is definitely part of the reason - but on the other side of things, Brienne represents the honor of a knight that Jamie should have been presenting his entire life. So he knows right from wrong - he made his poor decisions on his own. That's what will make his eventual redeeming moment worth it..... unless GOT pulls a GOT and he dies for no real reason despite it all.

I think Jamie's biggest "blemish" as a knight was probably his finest act. Dude saved MILLIONS and is genuinely hated by everyone for it.

I don't have much hope for Jamie surviving, but it'd be pretty cool if he was the one to kill the night king (Kingslayer x2)

his blemish as a person is much more than a dark stain. Pushing a young kid to his likely death, and actually killing a young lad in a cage.

80% of the characters that appear on that trailer are going to die lol

I would like Jaime to survive, but I really doubt he will. And I fear Brienne will have a similar fate.

Oh yah. The trailer suggests that Brienne, Pod, Jorah & Greyworm are all on the front lines for the start of the big battle. Dead! All of them, DEAD.

RIP Greyworm. Well at least he got some female companionship I guess.
