Catalytic convertors

So, that's fun. We've owned a motorhome for one month. Haven't taken it out yet, tomorrow is our first trip.
We put it back in storage ten days ago. Fire it up this morning, sounds like a fudging bomb went off. I immediately knew it... gosh darn catalytic convertor was stolen.
Little did I know, these are a crazy hot thing right now. I'm in a row of like 6 other RV's in this storage area, and only one other got hit - also a Ford chassis like mine, others are not.
My Uncle got his jacked a few weeks back, two cities over. Called so many RV/muffler places today, only to find out its a big ass problem and many have been hit lately. Parts are behind everywhere.
No liability on these storage places either. Thankfully my insurance helps, but still have to pay a $250 deductible.
Some bullcrap. I mean, #FirstWorldProblems and all, but c'mon...

Yeah, they're worth $$ even when just cut off, so this has been a problem for awhile. Sorry to hear you got hit.

Yeah, my mom's car got hit while her car was parked at work. They had the whole thing on camera. The guys were in and out in like a minute. Certain vehicles are easier to get to than others. The metals in them are somewhat valuable and metal scrap yards can pay a couple hundred for each one.
Some article I read recommended engraving your VIN on your catalytic converter.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the pandemic has seen a rapid rise in catalytic converter theft. In 2019, an average of 282 catalytic converters were stolen every month; in 2020 the average had risen to 1,203--and that's just an average. In December alone, 2,347 catalytic converters were stolen.

Why are they worth a lot? Are they made of brass or copper? We have a lot of thefts in the oilfield from meth heads stealing brass valves. I stated spray painting them gray and they haven't caught on yet. Friggin thieves are the worst.

They contain platinum and palladium among other metals.

Rhodium is probably the biggest factor. It's by far the most expensive precious metal. 25K+ per ounce. Nearly doubled in the past year or less.

I haven't had it happen yet, but I've known neighborhoods here and there have been hit.
I seen stories of family vehicles for special needs kids losing their needed transportation... hard enough as it is with medical bills, etc...
They better not let me catch them... cause they want metal, i'll give them metal.

I own a bunch of Fedex trucks, and our terminal can't handle the amount of trucks we need to deliver all of the volume we've seen in the last year. So they've rented a lot across the street to park the extra vehicles in. We just had two catalytic converters stolen last night, but there have been over 30 instances of it happening in our building alone.

I'm surprised methheads don't take catalytic converters more often here, they just have bicycle chop shops. Crap seems like it would be more profitable

I'm pretty sure the thieves that steal cat converters have mechanical knowledge and experience of some kind... probably even work as a mechanic. This isn't the work of some random methheads, etc.

On the vehicles they tend to target, it doesn't take much. Within 5 minutes and you don't need to be a mechanic, just a basic knowledge of what it looks like and where it is, then you cut it out
