List your favorite console by generation. You can use Wikipedia as a guide if you like. List why.

https://en.m.wikiped...

1: N/A (Pong, pong and more Pong! I only owned the Odyssey 300 and it was crap)
2: Magnavox Odyssey^2 (Homer pick. Not many games, many ripoffs, but some definite gems here)
3: NES (It's not even close)
4: SNES (Favorite system of all time)
5: N64 (It beats out the PS1 for multiplayer. Ocarina, Bond, Wrestling)
6: GC (Starting to get tough. Still a Nintendo Homer. Eternal Darkness, Mario Golf, RE4, Metroid Prime. I'd probably put Xbox over PS2, but this is closest to a 3 way tie)
7. PS3 (Another close 3 way race. Really enjoyed the Wii, but PS3 had more great games. Preferred PS3 exclusives over 360. All were great)
8. Switch (I'm lumping 8 and 8.5 together. Still nothing on the 4 or One that has given me a reason to buy either yet. RDR2 might change that. Switch has revolutionized gaming for me. I buy games on Switch I'd have no interest in buying on other systems due to off screen play. Plus BotW is probably my 3rd favorite game of all time. This gen has confirmed how little I care for online play.)

A Nintendo homer, and generally rooting for the underdog (minus NES and SNES).

you must not be into rpgs? ps4 is killing it in multiple genres but rpgs are seeing a real resurgence after falling off some for ps3.

1. Pong by default, ive never played the others.
2. 2600, this is where it all started for me
3. NES
4. Genesis, we were genny kids during that era, though today id probably lean snes but genny has the memories there
5. PS1
6. PS2, though the og xbox and dreamcast were def superior, but it had the games, were more of those games multi i might lean og x.
7. 360,
8. PS4, and number 1 all time. the depth of the experiences in some of these games is unrivaled for me. the witcher and persona 5 are far and away my number 1 and 2 games ever.

i dont think it makes sense for wii u not to be 7th, i think this list is off and going on years released only doesnt really put things were they should be. wii u is comparable to the ps3 and 360 and has the same games, whereas switch shares some games with ps4 and x1. switch is a contemporary to the ps4 and x1 for all intents and purposes.

You're saying Wii and Wii U are 7th? I believe it's widely considered Wii U is 8th with PS4/One. A lot of people are saying Pro and X are 8.5 with Switch, but I say screw that. It's all 8th gen.

And no, I don't typically care for RPG's.

1. Nah, I'm good
2. Atari 2600 (First video game memory is playing 2600 Bowling with my grandfather)
3. NES (Favorite console)
4. SNES (First console I ever owned, shoutout to the Turbografx-16 and Sega CD. Really strong generation.)
5. Saturn (N64 is garbage and I never really had a PS1)
6. Gamecube (Shoutout to the Dreamcast as well)
7. 360 (Got me back into gaming after a hiatus over college)
8. PS4 (We'll see if the Switch dethrones this with more exclusives over time, I don't particularly care about power and numbers)

I'm not going to group 'em by "generation" because where do you put a console that lasted from 1990 to 2004? raspberry

Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, NEC TurboGrafx-16, Neo Geo, Super Nintendo, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Game Boy Advance, Microsoft Xbox 360

1. dgaf
2. dgaf
3. MSX Great homebrew scene. Can play most games (all that I care about really) with a midi synth.
4. PC Engine. I love shooters and the PCE is loaded. Love the oem controllers with turbo switches. But really this entire generation is phenomenal. Sega CD has two of my favourite games ever in Popful Mail and Snatcher. Technically PCE does too, and Snatcher is just better on PCE, but it's not in English so to me personally it's a Sega CD game. And I mean SNES has fuggin SMW, Super Metroid, Link to the Past etc... Just an amazing generation.
5. FURK. I've played so much Saturn and PS1. There is a huge amount of overlap in their libraries too. I'll give the nod to the Saturn for it's fabulous 3D and the fact that is has my favorite pinball game. Plus the Saturn along with the Dreamcast I played a bunch of imports back when I was printing off translation guides and staining them with coffee (maaaany years ago).
6. Dreamcast. I used to replay Shenmue and Shenmue II every Christmas break. VGA. Crazy Taxi. Rez. Jet Set Radio. Phantasy Star Online. All the great Neo Geo ports w/o the Neo Geo prices. Like anyone else from my generation that games I've played a lot of PS2 as well but the DC is special for me.
7. Hyperscan obviously. Wait what? 360. Those Cave shooters over VGA to a CRT monitor via VGA cable is the tie breaker for me. Both had exclusives I enjoyed.
8. PS4. What's an XBone? Played through like 3 games on Wii U, the game library just isn't there.

1. n/a
2. n/a
3. nes for mario brothers
4. snes for mario games and donkey kongs mostly
5. ps1- for legend of dragoon and many other great games, n64 is a close 2nd
6. ps2, hard choice, bcuz i like gamecube alot too, but i played ps2 more, kingdom hearts, resident evils
7. ps3, easy choice, not bcuz im a sony fanboy, but my 1st xbox 360 got rrod right after i got it, then went for ps3
8. ps4- put so much time into ps4 games, over the xbox one

ya its all 8th,

id say wii should be with ps2 and og xbox and wii u should be with ps3 and 360, they shared most of the same games it doesnt really make sense to compare wii u to ps4 and x1 just because it came out later than the ps3 and 360 it was still part of that branch of the tree. you can compare the ps2, wii and og x, and you can compare the wii u, ps3 and 360 against one another in games and overall hardware. nintendo releasing off the schedule of the other two throws it off but it doesnt really make sense that way.

and ya if you werent into the rpg stuff and didnt care for modern open world games and rpgs i can see the lack of love for ps4 and x1.

1: Color TV Game. Partially because it's the only one I own...
2: Atari 2600, no question. I have too many fond memories with this thing. (And severely worn down paddles...)

3: NES, again, no question. Being blown away by an actual scrolling screen in Super Mario, to discovering my love of RPGs with Dragon Warrior...
4: SNES. Some of my favorite games ever reside here. And how could I forget the lunchroom arguments about this vs the Genesis. I'm discovering the TG16 now, but it won't dethrone it.

5: Now it becomes challenging. As a kid, I was very heavily in the Nintendo camp, so I started with the N64. But the severe lack of RPGs pushed me to look at the PS1, which, at the time, underwhelmed me compared to the quality of the SNES ones. (I later found the smaller ones that got buried by things like FF7 that I preferred.) If I have to go with as the gen was around, actually, none. Going by a majority of time, PS1 takes it. But, if I can look at now, I'd actually go Saturn. I'm discovering all the good games I missed out on, wishing I knew about it when it was being clearanced.

6: Another gen where if I looked at for the time, none. (I was very strongly into anime at this time, and after the prior gen's disappointment, I wasn't really looking at games.) Post this, though, it's the PS2 easily. Lots of good RPGs, and I had a slightly better idea of what to look for. I did find the DC during clearance, and it does have some gems, but just not enough to topple the PS2.

7: At this point, I was starting to rediscover gaming. I really wanted to root for the Wii, since it was doing things differently, which I felt gaming really needed. (The huge graphics push did not interest me.) Despite its huge success, too many of its games were crap. Yes, there are some good ones, but I found that some of them would've played better with normal controls. Even Nintendo's own games couldn't avoid a gimmicky feeling sometimes. In the end, I would give the nod to PS3, but I did a lot more gaming on my 3DS...

8: If we only use WiiU, it goes to PS4 easily. Again, Nintendo had a good idea with the WiiU tablet, but the inability to use multiple restricted it too much. Nintendo killed it off before any real potential could be discovered. If we also allow Switch, then this becomes TBA. The Switch may potentially reveal some of that potential, but it's still young enough that it could go either way...

You know this was going to be my answer but I figured I would go with consoles for the spirit of the thread.

To explain where I'm coming from on it.

I greatly prefer the Japanese computers of this era. I wouldn't even have NES second in this gen, maybe third. I'm going off of what I care to play right now and looking at all of this in retrospect. In terms of popularity and what most people have played, they are doing to vote NES and I'm not surprised at all that it's basically everyone's choice.

NES has a lot of bad ports/inferior versions, but NES Tetris is great at least.

My favourite NES exclusives are boring and probably similar to anyone elses. Stuff like Mario 3 and Megaman 2...

3. N/A
4. SNES (Didn't own any of the 4th gen consoles, but I've played more SNES games than I have Genesis games so I'll give it the edge)
5. PS1 (N64 is a close second, but I give the edge to the PS1 for the RPGs, survival horror, and story-driven games)
6. Gamecube (The honest answer is PS2, but I don't want it to be a Sony clean sweep at the end here. This is still my favorite gen. Gamecube and PS2 are my favorite consoles of all time and the Dreamcast will always be special to me)
7. PS3 (This one isn't even close. I like my Wii U but I spent 99% of the gen playing my PS3)
8. PS4 (Already overtaken the PS3 and probably the Dreamcast on my all-time list. Still behind the Gamecube and PS2, but I think it'll be number 1 when it's all said and done. The library is un-freaking-believable)

If the PS4 didn't have exclusives I really want I'd have definitely not bothered. Basically I bought a $200 Uncharted, Yakuza and SRW box. I'll buy and play other games for it since I have the system but those franchises are the reason I have one. Everything else I really want to play is on PC.

I agree the MSX has better ports of Konami/Capcom and other titles. It's a system I considered getting into long ago. Do you emulate it or have/use actual hardware?
