It's easy enough to get a Japanese eshop account if you want to play it.
In Japanese.

Just play the fan translation. If Nintendo hates your money so much, just emulate it in English.

Yeah, I don't see what the big deal over getting this "officially from Nintendo". An ENG translation, which I haven't played (or any Earthbound game--yet), has been out for quite a while. Play that, move on, and GAME ON.

It used to be a big deal because everything was physical. Then it was understandable to want a copy of it on your shelf. But there's 0% chance we'd get a physical copy of it in America these days. So why not just play a rom vs. playing it on your console. You do have to have a computer less than 20 years old probably and some type of controller (unless you want to use keyboard) that's all. Or some other hacked console that can play GBA roms.

I got the Japanese Virtual Console version on my Wii U originally just so I could say I legally owned it, thinking I would just muddle my way through it a la Gyakuten Kenji 2. Then benstylus snagged a cart for me so I could play the translation by way of the Retro Freak.
Would it be nice to have an official English release? Absolutely! But unfortunately, that ship seems to have sailed.
