I loved Days Gone, really awesome game. Death Stranding looked like a slog. MGS2 was really the height of Kojima for me too.

Death Stranding is one I can't get into. Playing MW2 right now... Man 4K @120hz... They do this right. Say what you will about COD, but the single player is usually pretty damn polished and multiplayer can't really be beat. Halo tries...but it's just not COD.
I loved that whole trilogy. I just did the single player, but seeing that MW3 logo turn into WW3 was one of the most exciting title screens I've seen. I don't even like realistic first-person shooters, but those hooked me. Couldn't get into any of the other Call of Duty games, but I'd recommend those three to people who don't even like the genre.

I kinda like that it can be long or not long depending on how you play. I don't do a lot of side stuff and unlike some games you don't need to level up slog style to progress.

Enjoyed the story. If they make a 2nd one for whatever reason I'd replay the first.

I miss linear narratives with closed controlled maps. Those were the days.

DG was long even in just core narrative. All open-world games have that lateral time-wasting filler, but it felt like the story had an extra act. I was really hoping we'd get the sequel, but I'll just tell myself an implied sequel is better (kind of like if The Matrix just stopped after the first film).

I am enjoying MW2 right now.

Day's Gone, I bought that when it released and never played it. I seriously need to fix that.

There was some recent internal change to the whites to reduce Drift. I had one with drift. Luckily it was still under warranty by like a day.

White, Black and Red I believe did not initially get the update. That maybe different now assuming the old stock has been sold.. I would probably check the versions.

Blue, pink, Purple did and I would imagine the new ones recently released have also got the same treatment.

Bungie says it has “noticed a notable number of PS5 players playing the PS4 version of Destiny 2 on their current-generation consoles.”

I've seen far too many threads on Reddit, Twitter, other gaming forums etc. where people haven't figured out how to upgrade to the PS5 versions of PS4 games. Sony dropped the ball there by not making it dummy-proof. This is a simple process that you shouldn't have to be going out of your way to do.

I told myself I would hold off on getting a PS5 until GOW2 hits, and now that it's here I just placed my order on PS Direct. I could not be any more excited about a game...I'll prob just unplug my XSX until I beat it.

I tried playing Hollow Knight yesterday and I really could not get into it. It was more slower paced than I like my metroidvanias (I know that doesn't last) and I found myself dying constantly to really cheap hits from enemies where they were finding kinks inbetween my character hitbox and my attacking hitbox and I was getting very frustrated. I'm sure I'll get back to it eventually but for now I moved on to Dead Cells and this is waayyyyy more my speed. I am loving it

It took me 4 times before it clicked. Nothing really changed except me. I had the same issue with BoTW. I think in both cases I needed to meet the games half way.

With Hollow Knight I was able to be more zen about getting lost and dying. I also didn't try to "souls-through" the bosses that 4th time. Instead I skipped them and came back if it stopped being fun. Not saying it will click with you, but it ended up being one of my favorite Metroid-like games; definitely the most recent of my favorites.

The system is almost 2 years old, so no warranty. It's starting to aggravate the piss out of me. Im always afraid that a new game will cause it to do this.

Yeah, signals dipping is one thing (could be a sound system sync issue for instance), the system powering down is either overheat or power supply failure. Having to unplug and replug is actually a +1 for bad power supply. It could be a bad SSD, but much less likely, that'd probably cause a hung system, not a powerdown.

It may not be covered under warranty, but it beats paying $500. I'd still call Sony and see if they'll take a look; if it's a defect from an early line it's also possible they may just take care of it and have you pay shipping or something. If it's a power supply that's like a $100 part swap, maybe $180 on top for labor, if it's overheating they could charge for a new mainboard... but it's more likely it just needs to be re-lubed and re-sealed. I'd trust Sony over any third parties right now, because if the third party guesses wrong or fudges it up it's just gonna cost you more to fix it.

That sounds like either a faulty or dusty power supply (PS4 games draw less power than PS5 games). Try to clean really well around it and see if that fixes the problem.

Also, I want to say that it doesn't do this all the time. I can play for hours without issues, but select games will make it shut down. The games are Outriders and Biomutant ( both games caused the issue twice within and hour period). And it happened once on GoW

Different games tax the system in different ways.

Unsurprisingly, step one in finding out how to send your system in for repair is to try out their nifty website they spent a few hundred thousand dollars on:

https://www.playstat...

There's a thread for your specific problem where it actually directs you to set up a repair.

I recently took the plates off and cleaned all the dust and crap off, because I noticed recently the system was making a lot of noise and seemingly struggling (only on ps5 games, not ps4), i haven’t confirmed 100% it’s fixed now but I think it is. There was a shocking amount of dust in there

I'm going to second what DarkFact has been saying. Take it from someone who experienced this same issue you're describing. For me it all started and ended with Elden Ring. Elden Ring had issues from the get go, crashing and deleting saves. I had these issues. Eventually after patches, and cleaning the internal dust out of my console, plus a few other recommended tricks (like plugging the USB charger into the back or front only, forget which). The issues subsided for awhile, and I eventually beat Elden Ring and moved on to other games.

A couple months later my son begins playing Elden Ring, it crashed on him at various times during his many hours of playing. Each time it crashed now and when I was having the issues, I had to physically pull the plug from the console, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. The last time it crashed the graphics went haywire, freaking my son out, and the system shutdown. It never turned on again. The blue light would light up for two seconds and then shut off. Couldn't boot into safe mode, nothing.

I had my PS5 very close to launch, end of November I want to say. I just went through the repair process a few months ago. I was out of warranty because it had been a year and a half. It cost me $244.50 to send it in to Sony for them to fix. The turn around was quick, they have repair facilities here in the states. I sent it in and got it back all in a week's time or so.

I can't stress this enough, but BACK UP YOUR DATA, saves, photos, videos, everything. If it crashes and won't power on you're screwed. From what I can tell this crashing had to have lead to a hard drive/motherboard failure. Sony sent me back my console, but it was completely factory reset. I'm not sure if the original HDD is in it, but I'm guessing not. Everything was lost aside from my cloud saves.

I had a ps4 pro that had an HDD meltdown playing RDR2. It did similar stuff after running a bit and probably overheating- like 30 mins to an hour I’m guessing depending on how fast / hot it got. Eventually it died and the data was lost that I had not uploaded.

Definitely seems like a faulty system. The fact that you have to replug the power maybe it's just the power brick? If you can somehow purchase just a brand new official power brick from sony that MIGHT solve your problem.

A power supply issue was one of the first things I thought when my issues started (details in my above post) as well. Unfortunately in this case the power supply is internal, making it tough to test. A new external cord to the wall likely won't do the trick. In my post above, I left out the part where I actually took my PS5 to a 3rd-party repair shop thinking I could get it fixed quicker and cheaper. They swapped out the internal power supply for a new one to test this theory and it didn't work. After waiting weeks for them to do this, which ended up being a waste of time, I was back to square one. At least the repair shop doesn't charge their customers for devices they fail to repair.

God of War Ragnorok- it’s a fun game but I find myself sighing when I see the huge set pieces / puzzles I’ll be working through- they feel tedious to me but they are well done. Combat is really good and very deep. Feels much better and I never feel as futile as I did against the hard level Valkyries etc in 2018. The voice actor choices seem off for a few toons. I’m not in love with this game but I’m not going to criticize it because it’s not 100% my thing. This game is best in class and 10/10 objectively. It just is. If you like GoW this is your magnum opus.

Taking a look at the PS Plus Premium games that just got added 2 days ago overall I would say I'm happy with the service so far and intend to renew at the end of the month. Guess I should finally play Skyrim. I tried to pick it up after the Witcher 3 but realized I really didn't want to start playing a long epic game again so soon after playing another one.

Looking forward to working my way through Kingdom Hearts with my boys, although whoever was in charge of naming these games should be fired.

I am looking forward to the Kingdome Hearts additions. But I agree, the service is still relatively new people complaining the games it offers now is kind of a snapshot of where society is right now. Everyone wants everything yesterday and don't realize it takes time to grow out a service. Prime, Netflix, Game pass, Apple TV all had issues at first and some of the newer once are still finding there way. Disney Plus even, though it took less time for them to find there way... though even now if I was not getting it for free I would not pay for it consistently and wait for a series to end it's season before subbing and binging and cancelling. Netflix and Prime are the only ones I am continually subscribed to... Prime, well it's really a no brainer and every time I go to unsub from Netflix it hears me and BAM there is something new to watch, that and my wife loves her true crime and there seems to be a never ending stream of it hitting Netflix. Point is, for the most part it takes time to build out a service and I am pleased so far with what Sony is doing. There is ALWAYS some big tittle to play.

Extra makes a ton of sense if you're a plus subscriber at all. I don't subscribe to plus or have a lot of spare time, so I'm not sure if I'll ever subscribe to extra. If they did the everything day 1 thing that Microsoft does, I'd subscribe for sure. Sony seems to realize how unbelievably self-destructive that is for sales, though.

Aye but I got the purple one when the colors came out and that has barely been used and dies just as fast as the OG controller with the system. I could be crazy, didn't record time, but absolutely seemed much longer.

Also the controller does look better than expected.

DS battery seems fine to me. I'm surprised when it has to be recharged, mostly because I don't have a Sony system to tell me obnoxiously it's low charge but mostly because it's approaching xbox rechargeable status. not there, but closer, the DS4 was dogcrap. DS3 was way better for me, in a great many ways

Yeah I’m gonna hopefully get it for Xmas The Callisto Protocol. I’m hoping it’ll satiate those Dead Space needs we’ve been lacking before the remake comes out that is. If for nothing at least those graphics on the Unreal engine look mighty robust and almost uncanny next to the actor which is pretty nuts. I hope it performs as well as it looks.

I got one of those Sony Pulse 3D headsets yesterday. I didn't wanna do it at $100 but they were $70 for Black Friday/Cyber Monday and I just wanted to replace the cheap headphones I had been using (and I mean cheap, like they were under $20).

I'm no audiophile, and maybe I'm just easily impressed after using cheap headphones for the past couple years, but these sound great...when they're working. When playing BioShock 2 last night the audio kept dropping if I leaned back too far, or put my hand over the left side of the headset. Even right now, I'm doing neither of those things and sitting less than 3 feet from the console and it sometimes drops.

I've seen threads on Reddit where people say it happened to them too, but they changed to the USB slot on the front of the console and it fixed it, but that's the slot I was using from the start because the rear USB slots are taken up by the PSVR and it's not helping. I guess I can get around that by using it wired, but a big part of the reason I had bought it was because I wanted a wireless headset.

edit: Saw another suggestion about using a pin to press the reset button on the USB dongle thing and I did that and so far the audio signal hasn't been dropping.

edit 2: That didn't help for long.

I've been playing the Cowabunga Collection the past couple weeks.

Last night I finished TMNT (NES). I'd played it way in the past and don't think I ever got through the dam level. Even with a guide and gratuitous use of the rewind it wasn't a walk in the park. I can't imagine how anyone could have legitimately finished this in the past. What a ridiculous game.

Also played through a few versions of the classic beat 'em ups. They delivered on just as much fun as I remembered. My 8 year old nephew had a blast. Good times.

I recently got this headset too. From what I know this uses 2.4GHz to connect so if your wifi or other electronics are using that frequency nearby maybe it's causing problems. Maybe try switching to 5GHz for other things to lighten the load on the 2.4GHz frequency? Might be worth a shot.

I’m on the second chapter of The Callisto Protocol. Early thoughts:

-The graphics are fantastic. It really looks next-gen.
-The gore took me by surprise.
-The story hooked me right away. It’s not terribly original, but it builds the tension well.
-So far, it doesn’t seem like I can run, which is annoying. Movement feels a bit stiff walking.
-The combat is OK, but I wish there was a dodge/roll button. The hold left or right to dodge thing isn’t very intuitive yet.
-I was still downloading the update, but, unpatched, this crashed on me twice.

Don’t think I’ve posted before about this issue. So 4 days ago my PS5 started dropping the internet. I don’t mean for a few seconds, I mean I would have to reset my router and MAYBE that would fix it but literally I have no clue how it decides to reestablish connection. It’s not the router nor the internet as I have 2 phones, a computer, and two switches that have had no issues. It’s also not distance as the router is near the PS5 (like my switches) and my computer upstairs connects fine. The only change I made around 4 days ago is I got a pulse PS5 headset and had been using that wirelessly. Just to check I unplugged the adapter from the USB and played with the headset wired but it’s still an issue

From a troubleshooting perspective I’ve
- reset router
- reset PS5
- Booted in safe and went back to factory settings
- tried establishing a 5 and 2.4ghz connection

I’m at a lose. I have a new router coming but I don’t really believe that is the issue. Anyone ever run into this?

So after rebooting everything it seems to be holding the connection now. For the flicker when you start up a game, do you have video settings in your PS5 for HDR set to "on when supported"? Mine used to do that when I'd start up a game that didn't use HDR.

As for the flicker while you're playing a game, I've had mine do that a few times. I don't know what causes it but it hasn't done it in a few weeks.

Switched the PS5 to the other side of the tv closer to the router (were talking less than 5 feet) and was getting 76. Decided to just hook it up wired and ran a test and getting 430 mbps. So something is up with the console. Looking into to what I can do to possibly get it repaired/replaced

I've always had a pet peeve about that, even as a teenager. I would completely turn off my SNES so as to not add time to my play time on RPGs where my dad would leave it on, go eat, then resume playing. There are a couple switch RPGs that actually keep counting and putting time into time played even when the damn system is in sleep/hibernate mode. Ni no Kuni II and can't remember the other. I purposely exit to title and then reload the game in those cases.

@kevolones I loved Everspace... looking forward to Everspace 2.

Elite Dangerous is a PC game port. The controls are complicated (much like a flight simulator). Somehow I got into playing it on console with a controller. I just prefer console to PC these days (like sitting in a comfy chair by the TV instead of at PC). ED is a very nice space simulation game, maybe the best ever. Game-wise, it is grindy but since it feels real, I can get past that. There's also a great community of players. Part of what I did this year was hitch a ride to the center of the galaxy on another player's fleet carrier (had to join discord to follow departure times and such, takes about 12 hours). I stayed there for about a week, then took it back to "the bubble" (populated space). cool crap

The developer of ED announced this year that they will not be porting their latest expansion to consoles. That caused a lot of console-player upset. Though, you can still play just fine for the most part. The new expansion is kind of dubious anyway. But yeah, its future on console is not great. They are doing a character transfer from console to PC to make up for it. I did it, but I'm not sure I'll play on PC again. There's some big alien invasion going on now too. The bubble is burning.

Sony's GotY awards is basically just a God Of War circlejerk. Even for "Best Story", runner-up goes to The Last Of Us Part I even though it's a story from 2013. Like, they're just patting themselves on the back with this whole list.

@Anxiouz and @beavis you both had mentioned buying a Pulse 3D headset around the time I did. What are your impressions of it after having a few weeks to use it? I still have some kind of signal interference with mine, unless I'm sitting very close to the console. When I used it on my PC (roughly 5 feet away from my TV and PS5) I had no issues with that even when I'd walk to the next room still wearing the headset. Though I think the microphone quality is not as good as in other headsets of the same price, but I don't use voice chat that much anyway.

Another thing about the headset that disappoints me is that they don't have an app like they did with their PS4 headset, where you can automatically apply settings that are made to sound better with certain games (or even just genres).

With all the internet connection issues I was having I decided to use mine wired. Never went back after I decided to direct connect my PS5 to the router. The headset audio was having some issues even connected a few days ago, but it stopped after that. When I was using it wireless I don't recall having any drops in audio. I don't think it is worth full price but it was worth what I paid for it on sale.

Honestly, I don't use it very often. I do like it and haven't had connection issues other than sometimes when in the menus (not in a game) I'll hear a little something like it lost connection and then reconnected real quick. I don't really do multiplayer so I can't comment on the mic quality.

I think it's a nice headset and sounds good. I just don't always feel like using it. I do think it makes a nice difference in the experience though. Being able to really tell which direction something is coming from is very noticeable.

Another thing about the headset that disappoints me is that they don't have an app like they did with their PS4 headset, where you can automatically apply settings that are made to sound better with certain games (or even just genres).
I did like that but kinda dig what Sony did on the PS5 better. Instead of having to go into that app to select the game settings you want, it's all in-game now. When in a game that has specific support for the headset, in the Audio menu of the game when you change the output source to the headset, it applies the custom settings.

But if the game doesn't have that support built-in, then you don't have the app to fall back on to make custom changes so that kinda stinks.

I'm still playing a lot of Horizon: Forbidden West and there are times the audio sounds really good, with little details I wasn't noticing when using the TV speakers. I rarely fast travel in the game, I just like running or riding a machine to the destination and listening to the various wildlife in the areas. Fighting the machines sounds really good too, especially with the bass boost enabled.

So far this is the only PS5 game I've played with 3D audio but I'm hoping to find some others. I assume most multiplatform games don't bother supporting it, just like most of them don't use the DualSense features in any meaningful way.

I've actually been mostly catching up on PS4 games I missed (or haven't played in years). The directional gunfire in Uncharted 4 is really good with the headset. And in Days Gone you hear zombie noises all the time (in general), but with the headset you can tell how close/far they are and in which direction. That made a big difference.

I find a decent amount use it ok. CoD audio is amazing and they use the DualSense really well too. I use Arctis Nova 7X and they make really good use of the 3D audio and it really sounds awesome in a lot of games.

I'm wondering how Elden Ring both sounds and feels with the controller.

I used the Pulse headset for most of the weekend and am now much more impressed. What I like the most is that I can clearly hear dialogue, sound effects, and music all distinctly and all super clear. I have a decent TV but usually keep the volume tame so this was so much better and I no longer needed to have subtitles on in some games where I found that helpful to catch things I miss.

I did have a lot more connectivity issues though and had to move the usb dongle to the front of the PS5. My PS5 is only about 5' from my chair, but it's a bit behind the TV. Moving the dongle to the front fixed it but was super annoying to have it cutout every 20-30 seconds for just a hair.

It was never this bad before so I def think it's 2.4GHz noise...which makes sense as its our default wifi channel for guests (we had the in-laws over) and neighbors prob had some new devices from Christmas doing stuff. Or the dongle isn't a strong signal and easily disrupted by anything in front of it (including the PS5 itself). These are my working theories.

Is it really? Wow. I think 12 hours for the standard controller is already awfully optimistic. I can't imagine it being worse, and still degrading. I think the standard is expected to degrade down to like 6-8 hours per charge. The Edge being worse means it might not even survive a single (albeit lengthy) sitting after a little while. Yikes.

I have 4 controllers but only 3 in rotation as one of the first ones had drift issue. And i’m sensing it happening slowly on one or two of the remaining ones now, so I guess I’ll have to buy another controller at some point. Switch is even worse when it comes to this.

Seems absurd, i don’t remember PS3 era and previous having such issues with the analogue sticks, felt like you got way more life out of each controller

I needed to replace one of my ps4 controllers (drift) about a month before I got a ps5. Oh well.
That was the first time I'd had trouble with a ps3/4 controller.
I had more trouble with ps2 controllers.

The worst was Atari 2600 joysticks. My brother and I would break one every few months. I can still remember what they were like inside because we often took them apart to try to fix them.

Haven't played anything in a while. But on a whim the other day logged on to the PS5 and saw The Witcher 3 next-gen update was out. So I downloaded it instead of spending money on something I probably wouldn't play. Lots of good changes (mainly updates to movement and combat, fast casting of signs and a bunch of balancing fixes). It actually sucked me back in. Not sure if because I haven't played anything in a very long time, or what. Right game at the right time kind of thing. But I imported my old PS4 save and started with the DLC. Not sure if I'll replay the main game or not yet. But gosh darn is this DLC fantastic. I forgot how good the DLC is.

It also made me want to watch the new Witcher thing on Netflix. That was a mistake. I don't think the people involved in that ever read the books. They just made up their own story, and its not great. The acting is also very poor.

They took a series that was 95% over the top violent combat and made it 75% boring cinematics and walks in the snow. I didn’t like it very much until the endgame stuff and then it was fun as hell. Mostly because the story was finally over. It felt like a lot of investment for a little return. I don’t understand why anyone would want a NG+ here.

I recently started playing Returnal for the first time.
I don't do too badly, but I'm terrible at dashing and taking zero damage, so my adrenaline is usually low.
After days of playing, I failed to beat Phrike. Honestly, I only made it to him like 3 times.
I tried hosting a game (generally multi-player is not my thing). I got a guy that seemed pretty good. We made it to Phrike after he revived me a couple times, but we had low health and we died.
The next game, Phrike's room was right at the start and the dude was still with me, so we tried again, without exploring/upgrading. Died again and he left my game.

I started thinking this game sucks. I'm going to quit. Then, I beat Phrike. I didn't even use the astronaut I had. I'm glad but also feel weird because I had half-convinced myself to give up on this stupid game.

Witcher 3 game was decent. I know many love it, but it was just pretty good for me. Witcher TV show was good at times, but I didn't love all the non-Witcher political stuff. I would have preferred just focusing on the Witcher and the interesting monsters, more like the game. It's a bad sign that Henry Cavill left the show, but I'll keep watching. I'll probably watch that Michelle Yeoh prequel soonish, though it doesn't look great.

I think you will probably like it as youre a DSouls veteran. This game felt to me like a Dsouls game with guns.

Its tough to get used to at first but its fun once you get a hang of it. I normally played 1 or 2 runs max and called it quits for the day. The 1rst boss did kill me a few times but eventually got him as his attacks can be learned. I thought the rest of the game was easier for some reason except for the last stage which kicked my ass. Im pretty sure I wasnt supposed to get through the previous levels that easily and thus my guns were under powered for the last stage.

Yeah, I think I'll do something like 1-2 runs per day. My progress seems semi-random. Like, I'll do great sometimes, but often will die early too. Also, the game seems like it's going to take longer to make a run because I want to build-up before skipping ahead. I haven't spent much time in biome 2 yet. I've been doing daily challenges too, which seem less hard and I get some ether.

You can skip straight to Biome 2. In the beginning there's a pickup to level you up to the appropriate level. Only downside is you might not get a weapon you like.

The +5 proficiency thing at the start of biome 2 is nice.

I got the Crimson Key from beating Phrike, but the Crimson Gateway's location is random in biome 1. So, I may still have to do some of biome 1 before I can skip to biome 2.

I assume the upper level with a light thing that's right at the start near my crashed ship requires some other equipment I don't have yet but might take me direct to biome 3.

Potentially, if I play most of Biome 1 and do well, I will have more integrity, consumables, good parasites, and artifacts. But it takes extra time and I often just die. So, I'll have to see how it goes. At this point, I may go to biome 2 the first chance I get to see how well I do.

If the liquid dripping / running is the issue it’s best to make sure it sets pretty straight horizontally too. Mine does not 95% of the time for the reason @bill mentioned. That little plastic turntable thing always slips and it’s slanted a bit.

I’ve always had my systems vertical since PS2 let me. Saves so much space in my setup. I’ve never had issues, and I’m not letting a tweet by a store in France trying to get hits deter me from going back to the horizontal days

Are many of you doing PS Plus Extra?

I signed up for it around Black Friday ($75/year on sale). I'm going to try to mostly play games in the catalog this year (and beyond?) and see how that goes. Many of the games in the catalog are games I bought and liked, so it seems sad to have paid what I did. There are a bunch I'm interested in trying too, and a few that were on my wishlist (Stray, Returnal, Spiderman Miles...). So, it's a decent deal for me even if the catalog doesn't grow to my liking.

I'm otherwise pretty good at waiting to play stuff (mostly to avoid paying $60+). I really don't mind not exactly owning games as I rarely go back to play something I beat.

I got premium because my stacked PS+ turned into it with the one month Now hack thing.

I would say that extra would have sufficed, i don't really use the retro system stuff or any game streaming. I just like the monthly games and the discounts.

I would do extra but I've played or bought nearly everything of interest. $60 for a year isn't too bad of an offer, but I don't play online and play most of my indies on PC. It seems like most of the stuff on there is a "yeah, that might be worth checking out eventually" game rather than a recent must-play

Id say Extra is the best value one if you can get it on a sale. Playing PSX games isnt for me and I dont see any value on playing the PS3 games streaming without any performance upgrades.

I think there is a sale right now. I also got the one on Black Friday but I dont remember what I paid for the year.

On a different topic, I just finished The Pedestrian via PS+ whichever included it. Fun little puzzle game that didnt overstay its welcome.

I just put Pedestrian on my wishlist, looks interesting. Why not, it's "free".

That's what I did when I got Extra. I went through the catalog and put games on my wishlist that I wanted to check out. There were too many to download all at once. I'm planning to go through them slowly when I'm looking to try a new game. It's like a virtual backlog.

I was already doing normal Plus for the past few years. I had done the math on it, and it came out that I'd save more money from the discounts on what I was buying. I tend to buy a lot of odd games that go on sale. Some have been good, but many I just can't get into. That's part of how I got to this point, wanting to instead play random games in the extra catalog, cheaper than buying them directly.

I'm unsure about the must-plays. I may still buy some if I just can't wait. I am pretty good at waiting, though. I've already been doing it, waiting for sales and such. For example: Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart, Horizon: Forbidden West, or Elden Ring - haven't played them yet, but if any of those drop into the catalog, I'll feel like I made the right call. If they drop to $20, I may buy. ...then kick myself when they get added to the catalog later. Or die, never having played them because I waited too long.

Yeah I agree as long as we hold off on day-1 buying $60-70 games then Extra/Premium may be worth it. Returnal is one game I was looking to buy for $25-30 so I got some value playing it over PS Extra. I can think of a couple more like Onechanbara Origins and Judgement.

Ive also sort of reduced the amount of cheap games Im buying lately because they are or eventually will be in the service.

I'm finding myself wanting to play exclusively off PS5 anymore because I can play in the basement to escape the family and have a nice big TV ... but I can also play upstairs, from my gaming laptop. Best of both worlds. Yet, I'd like to figure out if remote play can/should be operating better.

My PS5 and my PC are both connected over ethernet. I have a pretty nice setup using Ubiquiti Unifi gear and generally speaking, everything runs great in my house.

Remote play works well enough, but it feels like it 'should' be better running over ethernet. I get a little bit of choppiness/slow downs, and slightly pixelated resolution.

Is there any optimizations/tweaking to be done?

THanks

Hrm, so I got Chiaki to work ... the video performance is 'slightly' better as the stutter appears to be gone; however, it's still a compressed experience on the video. Also, the audio got choppy.

Gotta play more of both back to back, but right now the Sony one wins slightly as the audio is super annoying on Chiaki.

Yep, there is some configuration changes ... but sadly, they don't work (appears to be common). Just start poking around, will continue to investigate later and report back, but it seems promising that you can use your PC's hardware acceleration (in theory) to help the stream.

the audio/qtaudio_windows.dll file is inside the Chiaki folder

mine is C:\Users\kommie\Downloads\Chiaki-v2.1.0-Windows-x86_64\Audio\

Odd ... I only renamed the .dll file, then later tried to delete, the app had it locked up. Had to kill the app manually, delete that .dll, and boom ... it's way better (but I also set my config per those instructions as well).

So far, so good. It's definitey smoother than the official app. On fast movement, it's still got a delay and feels like a compressed feed for sure, doesn't feel like it's a full 1080 nor 60fps, but it's still better - it removes the stutter that the official app has.

So ... Chiaki - performance is definitely better! Sadly, it doesn't like to re-launch sometimes. Unsure if it's me or not, but have to restart my computer as even a force close doesn't fix it.

That, and it doesn't appear that my touchpad works properly while in Chiaki vs. the official app. I'm using DSX to emulate a DualShock though being that the official app doesn't support DualSense.

Gotta mess with it a bit more.

I've had issues too. Always get some ctrl error.

To get around the controller thing, I use a dummy account for the Chiaki login. Then I log into my real account. From here you get an annoying pop up that says *remote play connected" at top. To get rid of this I go to System - Language and swap it to UK English then back to real English and it goes away.

This lets me use a controller connected to the Ps5. You're just logged into two profiles at once with this work around.

I played Life Is Strange on Steam back in 2017 and really enjoyed it but have not played any of the other games in the series and I'm looking to change that.

I guess there is LiS: Before The Storm, LiS 2 and LiS: True Colors that have released since then. Does the save data from each game carry over to the next game like The Walking Dead games did? If not then I'll probably continue the series on PlayStation.

What in the actual hell is Sony doing? Instead of solving a problem they made another one. Are they releasing the drive because future revisions just won't have an optical internal drive option? If it doesn't work with the dozens of millions of digital consoles already purchased this is basically a repair part. Only good for consoles released after the September revision...

Games don't run off the disc, they get installed from my experience. So even if the ports on the current models aren't fast enough to move data it shouldn't matter.

My guess is that this is intentional. They want a sexy slim SKU as the only model available at a cheaper price. Then the add-on. But they don't want people to have the behemoth

How is the Ratchet & Clank series?

I received Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart for Christmas but other than a brief demo that I barely remember of the first game 20 years ago I haven't played any of this series before. I am kinda-sorta considering playing through the entire series via PS+ Premium before I open the PS5 game I got. But there are more games in this series than I thought, so before I commit to that I wanna know have these older games aged well? Are the controls and camera troublesome like when trying to revisit Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine? Does this sound like a dumb idea and I should just go straight to the PS5 game?

I think I've played them all, starting with ps2. It's hard to say if it's worth going back. I recall really liking the original games, but maybe they would seem dated. Most of the games have similar gameplay and they are not especially short. It may be too much to try to play them all back-to-back.

I don't know what people are bent out of shape calling it anti consumer. It's bull crap IMO. I look at it this way, when you bought your digital console you knew what you were getting and you knew what you had. If you want a disc drive then maybe you should have bought one that had it. That's my take, I find people get easily outraged now, and it's just laughable that this is seen as anti consumer.

Also, as it was pointed out it's rumored we don't know yet. The article could be completely wrong, but hey outrage right.. aahhh modern times.

I know they won't be going, but that's the time line I figure something will happen if at all this year.

Sony should make a handheld system that can play ps4/5 games and compete with Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck.

I feel like if a PS5 Pro was legit and releasing as early as April, wouldn't they have said something about it a couple weeks ago at CES?

I've been seeing more clickbait articles saying the opposite. That it sounds like the focus is just straight to PS6 instead of a PS5 Pro. I kinda lean that way since it took over 2 years for PS5s to just be found on store shelves. With so many new PS5 owners in the mix having a Pro even in another 2 years doesn't seem worthwhile. Having to manage the new disc add-on SKU + PSVR2 + PS5 Pro + PS6 planning sure seems like a lot to deal with.

I don't think that's real just yet and I am perfectly fine with my PS5 the way it is. I'll wait on that PS6 in 2028.

I Think there will be Pro variants of the PS5 and Xbox Series simply because there have been multiple typically good sources saying for a few months now that the dev kits are in the hands of dev's. This also tells me we are probably 12 months away from the release of a console and that kind of lines up with a early summer announcement.

I have still yet to see a PS5 in store (and I live in a large city), I would be shocked with all the supply chain problems that they would kick off the Pro. I also have to think we are a decade away from a PS6.

I am starting to see them more and more. Been seeing Series S and X's for awhile now... but my only option in town here is a place called the Source, and they get them in regularly. 45 min away Gamestop gets them in pretty often even Walmart. Even in Edmonton about a month and a half ago the bestbuy we stopped at had 7 of them sitting. Things are definitely better with supply. I suppose it also depends on an area's demand.

If history is any indicator we should see the slim/pro late this year and the PS6 in November of 2027.

I FINALLY got a PS5 (yay!). I can't seem to recover my account. It keeps asking for a 2 Step Verification code. It says to open my authenticator app. I don't have an authenticator app or a previously saved backup code.

Anyone deal with anything like this? Of course I can't actually get through to a real person at Sony.

I'm sure I've missed this conversation in the past, but what's the deal with the new PS Plus service? I must be missing something because it seems absolutely amazing. The premium tier doesn't seem with the extra money...I won't use cloud streaming, trials, or most of the classic library (have no desire to play PS1/PS2 games. The Extra tier seems amazing though. There are easily hundreds of games, newly released monthly releases, and online. When it says "PlayStation Plus Collection", is that basically every PS+ game released in the past?

Why is it that Xbox Game Pass is still considered the gold standard when this has easily double or triple the games? Is it just because Sony doesn't launch brand new games on the service? I mean, I could easily find YEARS worth of stuff to play on here without ever getting bored.

It's not every PS+ game released in the past. It's a catalog of games listed here: https://www.playstat...

That list changes monthly. So far not a whole lot of high-profile drop offs, but it's like Netflix with stuff coming and going. Every month games get added. You still get the few "claim and you have as long as you're subscribed" games each month, but the + extra games can disappear from the catalog. Good value if you get a subscription on sale, have plenty of spare time, and haven't played a lot of the older games. If you're after the latest and greatest releases you'll be disappointed.

As for the Game Pass advantages: it can be cheaply stacked, has day one releases, and also works on PC.

Have games left the PS Plus Extra catalog? I haven't seen that mentioned...yet. I'm not surprised it's possible, though. I still have some notable games in Extra that I want to play. If they disappear before or when I play them, I will be sad.

Yes they do remove some games. Nothing I was playing or interested in though. I dont know if they have it, but it should let you know when they plan to take it out. GamePass puts a timer on them which I guess helps.

I don't get that either. In roughly 3 weeks of having PS+ Premium I think I have already downloaded more games than I did during last Summer when I had 3 months of GamePass on PC. I don't care that it's lacking new releases on day one, if a game is worth playing on release day then it'll still be worth playing a year or two later.

However, a full year of PS+ Premium is $120 and once my current subscription expires in late July I think I'll just go back to the standard PS+ tier. My physical backlog is too big to get pushed aside for games I don't really own (same reason I don't keep a continuous subscription to GamePass).

I wonder what the business deals with Sony/Xbox are like for the game distributors.

Presumably game distributors have some games they are trying to maximize profit for. A few of their games are new/hot, so they keep the price high or offer minor sales on them. Then, they have some older games that are in the game stores, but probably the price has been reduced and they are selling less of them.

Sony must have some deal where they can join the PS Extra catalog and make revenue from that as well. But, it's probably kind of low-balled for most games. Sony likely offers better deals for popular games (to enhance the value of the Extra subscription). Being in the catalog could be a set amount of revenue per month or based on how much the game gets played, maybe a mix of both.

If the game is in the Extra catalog, probably sales in the store will go down. Rockstar yanked their Red Dead Redemption games from the catalog. So, you'd assume they make more profit than with those games in the Extra catalog.

I've heard more stories about devs just getting a guaranteed flat fee versus any kind of user count-based or activity-based metric. So they need to decide to take the $ and have access to an immediate audience or take a chance on themselves to sell more copies.

I forget which game it was but someone potentially got absolutely screwed by putting their title on GP. Like they expected to sell 200k copies so they took the deal, but on GP it ended up being played by literally millions people. That's not to say all of those folks would have bought the game at retail though. And would they have found that audience without GP? This is murky. They didn't think so before releases but it was easy to complain about GP after it being a popular game.

This explanation dances around it a little bit: https://www.gamespot...

RDR2 is a weird exemption. They charge $20 for it- online has real money items etc that they’d want as much exposure as possible for. You’d think online would go free - they did that with GTA V, right?

With ps5 more available and selling like hot cakes I understand why late last gen games would want to sell retail only.

I've been using the Pulse 3D headset more and more lately, and it's pretty dang fantastic. I'm playing Last of Us 2 (on PS5) now and the surround sound is great, plus voices are always crystal clear. It's very obvious where enemies are based on the 3D audio, and that has made a huge difference.

On the TV or my soundbar there are usually some things that are too loud and others too soft. The headset balances all of that really, really well. The clarity is a huge step-up with the headset and I can even turn off captions because of it.

I originally only used the headset with Days Gone because I got that at the same time and it helped so much with directionality. But now I find myself wanting to use the headset all the time...it was slow but it won me over. Even something like NFS Unbound sounds better in the headset than a soundbar and sub.

I pretty much wear the headset at all times when I'm playing now. I don't know what happened, I certainly didn't rearrange anything in my setup, but for nearly a month now I've not had the headset randomly disconnect at all lately when using it wireless.

I haven't played it yet but I downloaded the PS5 version of Death Stranding just because the game's description said it uses the 3D audio. I wish more games made note of that in their store listing pages.

I bought the 7X from someone here and while they work amazingly, I havent really noticed the 3D Audio. It could be that Im used to good surround headsets or maybe I havent used them that much or with the right games.

Started up Horizon Forbidden West, put on the Sony Headphones because of the above. Kinda forgot about them got them from here. They are awesome. Went the cheap way picked up HFW PS4 for $30 from GameStop on sale and did the free PS5 upgrade. As long as they offer the upgrade free, this is the way to go. PS4 versions seem to go on sale faster and usually already $10 less.

Tried The Witcher 3 free PS5 update, yes the game looks much better and I played past the Luberkin But it doesn’t hook me like HFW. TW3 is the only Witcher I have played, I feel like a Private Detective with Magic and a sword. HFW so far seems like a polished HZD which is a good thing for me cause HZD started to drag on. Hope to beat them both this year, then I can justify picking up GOWR.

HFW is surprisingly short if you just stick to main story. The surround sound is amazing. Honestly I use it more than the screen markers to locate the human baddies. Every once in a while a random animal noise or something will even make you jump a little.
