Let's discuss Sony's latest console, the PlayStation 5!

It's not every PS+ game released in the past. It's a catalog of games listed here: https://www.playstat...

That list changes monthly. So far not a whole lot of high-profile drop offs, but it's like Netflix with stuff coming and going. Every month games get added. You still get the few "claim and you have as long as you're subscribed" games each month, but the + extra games can disappear from the catalog. Good value if you get a subscription on sale, have plenty of spare time, and haven't played a lot of the older games. If you're after the latest and greatest releases you'll be disappointed.

As for the Game Pass advantages: it can be cheaply stacked, has day one releases, and also works on PC.

Have games left the PS Plus Extra catalog? I haven't seen that mentioned...yet. I'm not surprised it's possible, though. I still have some notable games in Extra that I want to play. If they disappear before or when I play them, I will be sad.

Yeah there’s been plenty of games that left
Red Dead Redemption 2 comes to mind (it made me rush to complete it)

Yes they do remove some games. Nothing I was playing or interested in though. I dont know if they have it, but it should let you know when they plan to take it out. GamePass puts a timer on them which I guess helps.

Why is it that Xbox Game Pass is still considered the gold standard when this has easily double or triple the games? Is it just because Sony doesn't launch brand new games on the service? I mean, I could easily find YEARS worth of stuff to play on here without ever getting bored.

I don't get that either. In roughly 3 weeks of having PS+ Premium I think I have already downloaded more games than I did during last Summer when I had 3 months of GamePass on PC. I don't care that it's lacking new releases on day one, if a game is worth playing on release day then it'll still be worth playing a year or two later.

However, a full year of PS+ Premium is $120 and once my current subscription expires in late July I think I'll just go back to the standard PS+ tier. My physical backlog is too big to get pushed aside for games I don't really own (same reason I don't keep a continuous subscription to GamePass).

Agreed. I have PS+ and GPU and use PS+ a lot more for various games

I've been mostly using GP. PS+ is okay, but it's all older games and nothing new. Just beat Moonscars and gonna try out Signalis next.

I wonder what the business deals with Sony/Xbox are like for the game distributors.

Presumably game distributors have some games they are trying to maximize profit for. A few of their games are new/hot, so they keep the price high or offer minor sales on them. Then, they have some older games that are in the game stores, but probably the price has been reduced and they are selling less of them.

Sony must have some deal where they can join the PS Extra catalog and make revenue from that as well. But, it's probably kind of low-balled for most games. Sony likely offers better deals for popular games (to enhance the value of the Extra subscription). Being in the catalog could be a set amount of revenue per month or based on how much the game gets played, maybe a mix of both.

If the game is in the Extra catalog, probably sales in the store will go down. Rockstar yanked their Red Dead Redemption games from the catalog. So, you'd assume they make more profit than with those games in the Extra catalog.

I've heard more stories about devs just getting a guaranteed flat fee versus any kind of user count-based or activity-based metric. So they need to decide to take the $ and have access to an immediate audience or take a chance on themselves to sell more copies.

I forget which game it was but someone potentially got absolutely screwed by putting their title on GP. Like they expected to sell 200k copies so they took the deal, but on GP it ended up being played by literally millions people. That's not to say all of those folks would have bought the game at retail though. And would they have found that audience without GP? This is murky. They didn't think so before releases but it was easy to complain about GP after it being a popular game.

This explanation dances around it a little bit: https://www.gamespot...

RDR2 is a weird exemption. They charge $20 for it- online has real money items etc that they’d want as much exposure as possible for. You’d think online would go free - they did that with GTA V, right?

With ps5 more available and selling like hot cakes I understand why late last gen games would want to sell retail only.

I've been using the Pulse 3D headset more and more lately, and it's pretty dang fantastic. I'm playing Last of Us 2 (on PS5) now and the surround sound is great, plus voices are always crystal clear. It's very obvious where enemies are based on the 3D audio, and that has made a huge difference.

On the TV or my soundbar there are usually some things that are too loud and others too soft. The headset balances all of that really, really well. The clarity is a huge step-up with the headset and I can even turn off captions because of it.

I originally only used the headset with Days Gone because I got that at the same time and it helped so much with directionality. But now I find myself wanting to use the headset all the time...it was slow but it won me over. Even something like NFS Unbound sounds better in the headset than a soundbar and sub.

I pretty much wear the headset at all times when I'm playing now. I don't know what happened, I certainly didn't rearrange anything in my setup, but for nearly a month now I've not had the headset randomly disconnect at all lately when using it wireless.

I haven't played it yet but I downloaded the PS5 version of Death Stranding just because the game's description said it uses the 3D audio. I wish more games made note of that in their store listing pages.

I have mine hooked up to the controller and love it. It’s so good when playing DMZ I can tell teammates where others are based on the sound of footsteps.

I bought the 7X from someone here and while they work amazingly, I havent really noticed the 3D Audio. It could be that Im used to good surround headsets or maybe I havent used them that much or with the right games.

Started up Horizon Forbidden West, put on the Sony Headphones because of the above. Kinda forgot about them got them from here. They are awesome. Went the cheap way picked up HFW PS4 for $30 from GameStop on sale and did the free PS5 upgrade. As long as they offer the upgrade free, this is the way to go. PS4 versions seem to go on sale faster and usually already $10 less.

Tried The Witcher 3 free PS5 update, yes the game looks much better and I played past the Luberkin But it doesn’t hook me like HFW. TW3 is the only Witcher I have played, I feel like a Private Detective with Magic and a sword. HFW so far seems like a polished HZD which is a good thing for me cause HZD started to drag on. Hope to beat them both this year, then I can justify picking up GOWR.

HFW is surprisingly short if you just stick to main story. The surround sound is amazing. Honestly I use it more than the screen markers to locate the human baddies. Every once in a while a random animal noise or something will even make you jump a little.

Anyone get the dual sense Edge? Just interested in feedback. As bad as I wear down controllers I’d likely never consider it. It sure is sexy though.

Pretty sure I beat HFW at like 12-15 hours. No side content.
