No one makes the truck I want anymore... what would you do?

I am wanting a full sized regular cab truck with 6.5' bed, 4x4, manual transmission, ideally V8

As far as I can tell, Ford makes the closest. No manual available, but I can get a new regular cab, 6.5' bed, 4x4 with 5.0L with them for ~52k as I would like it optioned. This would require special order though, nothing close to that in retail stock. Those engines love superchargers, can get up to 700hp at the crank cheap.

Toyota and Jeep make the only manual trucks anymore with the Tacoma and Gladiator. The Tacoma is really close as well. Manual, but no regular cab, have to get at least double cab, which with a 6.5' bed barely fits in my garage. Like 1" clearance front and back unless I move some shelfing. The 5.5' bed fits a lot better, but that's such a tiny bed. The 3.5L has a supercharger kit but overall, the 3.5L isn't meant to make a lot of power, it appears. Lucky to get 400 hp at the crank. But, the positive is these by far hold their value the best of any truck, for a regular model.

Any GM/GMC products I get the friends and family discount. But again, requires at least a double cab and no manual. But comes with either 3.0L diesel or up to 6.2L v8. I don't know anything about the 3.0 duramax, but the 6.2L and 5.3L V8 take well to supercharging. 6.2L getting to 700 isn't impossible, 5,3L maybe 100 hp less.

I've looked at used, but to get a good condition mid 90s F150 with 302 engine and 5 speed on 4x4, looking at like $15-20k. Which hardly seems worth it.

Truck would be used for commuting (1.8 miles each way), driving on forest service roads, hauling crap, and couple times a year doing light off roading. With that,

Oh, and final option would be to keep my 2001 4Runner, get a supercharger, body work, paint job, and get a trailer for when I need to haul crap. Supercharger + stuff for fuel, about $6k. Body work, paint, about $5k for good quality. Trailer, about $2k. My 4runner has 161k miles on it, so just getting broken in.

The F150 looks like its going to be the choice. Now I have to choose between XL and XLT models.
XL is cheaper, gives black exterior trim which I prefer. Requires a bunch of options to get it where I want, MSRP would be $47k for my bare minimum truck. Forces me to take a color that is ok, but not nearly as nice as other options.
XLT gives me option of buying a brand new 2022 with more options than I would pick, but for only $49k for being old stock. It comes in a color not available in 2023 XLT that is awesome, I really like the color. Other option is custom ordering. As configured, 2023 model year, looking at $53k MSRP. It allows for a color I like, but not quite as much as the 2022 color.

Leaning towards the 2022. That would put out the door ~$55k out the door after tax and what not.

Jfc, XLTs are now $55k?! Just bonkers.

Also, personally, I prefer the 5.5 bed with the extender.

I mean I'd go older, but that's just because I like to have a vehicle I can fix myself. 15-20k is insane, though

I'm sort of rushing because rumor is prices going up a few grand for next model year. XLT starts at $41,800, probably $44-45k next year.
4x4 - $3,790
Engine - $2,335
FX4 Offroad package - $1,095
Electronic locking axel at 3.73 ratio - $570
Spray in bed line - $595
Color - $495

Add in destination, doc fees and that bullcrap.

The 2022 I thought was going to work apparently got upfit to a Shelby Super Snake and the original dealer wants $100k for that, lol. As far as I can tell, all that is a rousch supercharger, hood with vents, vinyl decals, and lowered with street tires.

Too bad F250 doesn't come in standard bed. A long cab F250 loaded how I would order is only $55k MSRP. $2k more than the F150 I want, but it comes with a 7.3L "godzilla" engine (gas) and with the upgraded 10 speed transmission. The stock numbers aren't amazing, but you can easily get it to 700 HP NA and 1100 HP with a supercharger. That crap is bananas!

But alas, I want something that fits in my garage. It really does go to show that pricing is all demand based with no concern for actual cost.

Started the order process. This time they said it would be 4-5 months. So I signed up for MCA for Ford X-Plan, since you need to be a member 90 days before you can use this benefit.

Anyway, as configured:
Race Red, regular cab, 4x4, short bed, 5.0L V8, XL series (base model)
3.73 electronic lock rear axle (highest gear ration possible on F150)
FX4 off-road package (has a couple of off road modes, skid plates, and off-road suspension. But good chance I will change that long run)
Tow package with Ford Co-Pilot 360
and a number of other small things (I had to order carpet for instance)

In total, $48,890 before 10% tax, so should be $54k basically on the nose out the door after a $250 doc fee.

It will be interesting to see how the Ford X-Plan works. On base XL($33.7K), $1200 discount. On base XLT ($41.8K) is $2500 discount. Base lariat ($57.5K) is $3550 discount. I'm pretty sure x-plan applies to options except dealer installed. So I'd be at like the $47k price point. Maybe $3k off? Or is it going to sway more based on the XL base price and be only like $1500?

I will be looking to buy a good deal on one of the superchargers available. I'll also be watching for OEM wheels, LED headlights, and color matching grilles and bumpers.

Were there new trucks on lot at or below MSRP when you bought? Rates are around 9% now unless you find a special rate. Stuff is sitting now. But yeah, I’ll let you know.

There were some, but no limited, nor Powerboost. Thankfully my dealership sells at or below MSRP, even during the insane times.

9%?!?! Jesus.

Think that's bad, used market is even worse. National average is 11% for new loans. There is going to be a subprime auto melt down in a few years I bet. People with bad credit are getting 120 month 17% interest loans on like a 2018 F150 Larriat with little down and a $40k loan for a cool $700 a month for 10 years.

That's just absolutely insane... I've leased my last several, not sure what the rate actually comes out to but keeps payments way smaller.

Have you done anything to your truck, MrBean? I got the cheapest, craptiest wheels possible on my version. I am going more of a street build than an off road build. I'm thinking 20's make the most sense, but 22s look better. But most 22s have a negative offset, I'm worried about rubbing with them.

https://www.steeda.c...

At $1274 thats only $318.5/wheel and come with TPMS. The rest don't so add like $40-50/wheel.

https://offroadallia...
$425 each

https://havocoffroad...
$373

https://havocoffroad...
$403

https://havocoffroad...
$550

https://havocoffroad...
$415

Figuring out tire size is even more difficult. I want 31-33" tire, at least 10" wide up to 12" wide. Regardless, going to be $200-300/tire.

I bought those. They are $550 most places. Supposedly they have them in stock, but everyone else has 4-8 week back order on them. so I'm sort of expecting that, hence ordering now.

Tires I am looking at 275/55/20 as probably the best size. 31,9" tall, 10.8" wide

@Chad - nah, minus nerdy decals, I don't do much. Well ... rain guards, bed extendor, and tonneau cover. That's about it. Minus black wheels, not much else I want/need.

This is my 5th truck, and I've always had soft covers for the bed. I've always wanted something better, more durable, but never took the pluge. This time around, did far too much homework and ultimately went with LoMax. Holy crap is this thing awesome. My requirement was foldable and easily removable. Soft, and hard tri-folds, always require screwing/unscrewing to pull off. Not that it's super hard, just time consuming and annoying. LoMax I can legit get the whole cover on/off in less than 10 seconds. Highly recommend! Also, if you do, let me know. They're really expensive, but over on f150forum, found an independant seller that knocked off like $300.

As for bed extendor. Ford finally made a new model that allows for a removal without tools. All my prior ones, collapsed on the inside, but now you can just yank it out. Pro's and con's of each, but so far I'm digging this new style better for a 100% removal, giving full bed access vs. folding them up and shoving against the side.

I'm trying to decide what to do for the bed. I almost ordered a factory retractable tonneau cover, but those take up like 14-16" of bed space, which is pretty significant. And I couldn't find anyone talking about how easy it was to temporarily remove them. I was then looking at toppers (we used to call them canopies back in the day, but it appears topper is the term now). Holy crap I didn't expect those to be that expensive. I then started looking at like hard shell lift tonneaus. Really don't know what the answer is there.

What I want is something reasonably secure (so lockable) so I can take this on road trips or camping and have luggage. But I also want to be able to use this truck to carry stuff to the dump or move a table or get plywood or whatever, so it has to be easily removable. I'll look into LoMax. How much did it run? Seems like $1500-2k is kind of the magic number for a lot of tonneau covers.

I use a lockable deck box for camping gear. It fits into the bed very well and it's relatively portable. I don't leave anything valuable in it overnight but it's weatherproof and secure enough for most campgrounds. I've seen people similarly use a job box for a bit more security.

It really depends on what style/features/functions you're looking for. To me, the tri-fold's are awesome, but the soft one's aren't as secure, and they require some extra effort when fully removing. When you move to the hard ones, you get some cool new options regarding a quick removal (like LoMax), or the ability to simply stand it up against the back (poinless IMO). There are some crazy cool ones out there that don't fold, but push in/back, rolling, hydraulic, etc. Comes down to what you want/need and obviously budget.

Our big thing was/is, we need to remove the entire cover to maximize our space in the back. This is done for big camping trips, and drive-in movies. If you want full access to the bed, with quickest on/off ... LoMax is truly your best bet. With tax/shipping, I got mine for $800, which is like $400 under retail. I've had mine since Feb, and I still love it. 5th truck, 4th type of cover I've had, this is by far the best. Durability, security, and ease of on/off, love it. There's no world in which I ever see changing.

No one makes the truck I want anymore... what would you do?
